This game has no business being just 20 dollars literally robbing themselves beautiful visuals and soundtrack, its basically skate meet jet set radio vibes with sonicish battles/rails, while being, mad anime with a lot of levels to play, absolute masterpiece
GOTY material.
gameplay is really really good and is expanded upon in really fun ways. the story is kinda meh but you arent really forced to interact with it if you dont wanna
A ride like no other. If you have any fondness for tony hawk, play this game. If you have any fondness for score attack, play this game. If you love anime that cranks things up to 11, play this game. This might be one of my favorite games of the year for the fun trick system, how every level feels different, and the energy you get from the journey. Also love that there's just enough story to wrap everything together, but you could ignore it if you want.
Denshattack is a game with a funny concept that delivers with surprising depth. If you have any love for Jet Set Radio, Neon White, Japan, and graffiti, consider checking this game out. For $20 you get a feature complete game that lasts at least 8 hours. The gameplay is initially overwhelming for the first 10 or so levels - add to that the constantly evolving gameplay mechanics that get thrown in at least every other level. You really have to take this game slow and forgive mistakes, this is helped by how generous the checkpoints are. Once you get into the flow of the game, the gameplay is smooth and satisfying. The music is 100% the best part about this game. A 4 hour soundtrack accessible from Youtube and Spotify that is unique, engaging, and reverently references the games it's inspired by. I have been listening to the soundtrack before I started playing, while playing the game, and right now as I type this,. It's that good. It's like you took Jet Set Radio and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk's music, mixed em up, and added ~10 artists that absolutely smash it. The story is literally just Jet Set Radio but set in dystopian future Japan. But, unlike Jet Set Radio, the story never takes itself too seriously, this is incredibly necessary due to the ridiculous premise and many other off the wall story beats throughout the game. The game, however, reserves it's deeper character interactions with optional hidden "onsen" conversations. Realistically nobody playing this game expects any actual mind-blowing story elements, the story is passable. As far as things I didn't like - there isn't much. The focus required for gameplay is exhausting, that just means I can only play for 1 or 2 hour sessions then play the next day. Also, the voice acting is cute and campy, but if you look at it from an objective standpoint... it's bad. Some lines have me asking "was that the first take?". The game has jank as well, there are plenty of glitches that thankfully don't disturb gameplay too much thanks to the generous checkpoints. Overall, its a crime that Denshattack does not have more attention. Smaller releases like this should be praised and honored.
Goty
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gem, best game of the year for sure. Sheer fun to play, listen to and watch. The OST will live on my Spotify
