very fun and intriguing game. i didn't care for the story but the platforming and boss battles were hard and it was a nice treat.
DND a lot of potentional, it's a fun short game, even though it's not much the story is really interesting and I wish to see more, however I feel like some sections could had been better polished, especially in fighting and platforming, normal enimies can be easily killed and some don't have attack animation and some platforms felt out of place sometimes aside from the fact that for now it doesn't try to do nothing especial with it, I also feel like the game could be better if you could teleport between checkpoints and even a map might have been usefull when coming back, the bossfights are fun but they have some problems, the first one takes too long in my opinion and the second one is fine but if you die one time after the boss enterance scene and come back the boss wont attack you and you can cheese it, settings don't save when you leave which isn't something bad just a bother I had, other than those problems this game manages to have an unique charm into it and it is really fun in some aspects, I reccomend you give it a try after all it's free.

Very fun game for a freebie. Much more meaningful content than I was expecting. +Excellent writing. Interesting story, dialogue, characters. +Music ranged from "Not bad" to "Pretty catchy!" +Interrogation seems interesting except some of the choices are a stretch to figure out. ~Mediocre platforming and exploration. -Combat is imbalanced, normal combat is very easy, but bosses have a difficulty spike (mostly by having way too much HP that drags the battle out).
First up this game takes longer than 20 to 30 minutes more like one to two hours. The style is lovely and the controls are fluid. In terms of story this is a great prove of concept for a ghost detective investigating paranormal cases. This chapter also provides an interesting start to the present case. This could easily be an introduction to metroidvania and investigation games for those only familiar with one of those. However the bugs make this rather tedious. You have to set the controls every time you boot up the game and if you loose the final fight you have to restart the game because of a bug. Loose a few times and you'll understand how annoying this can get. All in all I'm giving this a recommendation and am looking forward to further chapters, however I expect these bugs to be ironed out by that time.
nice
I like this game and it reminds me of the skulduggery pleasant series, which makes me like it even more. Also if the controls for your keyboard make you want to die then if you have one hook up an xbox controller, it's much easier with one.
im honestly hyped for chapter 2 The pixel art, the story, the gameplay... it's all just so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good. I'm a sucker for any sort of 2D platformers, so I'm kinda biased, but this game is amazing. It can be a bit buggy, and I'll list all the bugs I found later on, but other than those bugs (one which made me have to reset and play the whole chapter from the beginning) every part of this game is perfectly executed. Anyways, here's some feedback: Every character is interesting and so are the relationships between them. I hate reading through stuff and I tend to just mash through all of the dialogue, but I can't in this game. Reading about how supernatural stuff works in this game is so much fun and so is asking people questions. The whole thing with the case book (I don't remember what it's called) makes it really easy to keep track of what's going on and really keep you interested in the case. Jumping around and killing enemies is kind of tough at first, since you don't know how to deal with some of their projectiles, but once I figured it out it was incredibly satisfying. I don't really like how there's a random chance to gain health back from killing enemies, since it makes it kind of annoying when you're about to go into a boss fight and you're trying to gain health by killing things but they just refuse to drop those health thingies. Maybe make it so there's specific enemies that give back health, or maybe and entirely different way to gain health like how it works in Hollow Knight, where you hold down a button and gain health back. But maybe that's just me. Maybe consider adding checkpoints right before boss fights? Dying in boss fights just means backtracking over parts you've already gone over, and then sometimes you mess up on your way back and lose some health, and then you go into the boss fight already with a disadvantage. However, backtracking probably wouldn't be too bad if when you entered a boss fight you automatically got all your health back. The whole thing about getting a double jump after beating the Peacock boss fight is really clever and cool, really hope that gets expanded on and maybe you can gain new abilities later on in the game. The ending bit with Valerie caught me so off-guard (in a good way), because I really like detective-type stuff and putting pieces together. Pressuring Valerie into admitting she was lying was incredibly satisfying, even though I just guessed and put random clues together until something worked. It reminded me a lot of Ace Attorney, which is 100% a good thing, since Ace Attorney is great. There's really not much to say about that ending sequence, the dialogue is perfect and believable, and it feels amazing to finally have Valerie let us go through that door. There's nothing to fix about this part, you guys really nailed it. The boss fights are slightly infuriating. Mainly the moon-faced guy (or whatever his name is). His move with spikes that come out of the ground are the most annoying sh*t to dodge, because the indicators of where they'll show up appear so quickly on the screen that half the time I don't even notice he's about to use that move. But to be honest, the boss fights were only infuriating probably because of the long journey I needed to make to get back to them (except the peacock boss fight, that checkpoint was pretty well placed). BUGS (there's only two that i found): 1. Peacock Boss Fight Bug: if you walk into the peacock you take damage, which isn't a very good idea in my opinion since sometimes I'd run into it by accident. Anyways, the bug is that if you walk into the peacock far enough and hit the wall on the other side, you can't take damage. And then, you can turn around and hit the peacock's head while you're inside it, without having to dodge all of the things it does. This works until the peacock enters the second stage (when it turns red), because then you start taking damage again. I didn't even beat this boss normally, I just did the bug and then finished him off during the red phase. 2. Moon Face Guy Final Battle Game Breaking Glitch Thing: yeah sorry I suck at giving names to things. So pretty much, if you die on the final boss battle with the moon face guy (the one in the summoning room) and then go back to it, the boss will be frozen and won't attack you. I think he might attack you if you pick up your coat back (because you lose your coat when you die), but I didn't try that. The GAME-BREAKING part is this: if you kill the boss before you pick your coat back up (while he's frozen), the coat will despawn and I don't think you can get it back. This means you can't talk to the NPC's and can't beat the game. This happened during my first play-through, and then I had to restart. I worked around this by getting the boss to a really low health and then picking up my coat and killing him. I just assumed that for some reason if I put my coat back on he would start attacking me, so that's the way I did it. So yeah, these bugs kind suck because you can dodge 2 bosses with them and one of them breaks the game. But all of that really doesn't matter compared to the insane amount of good stuff that is in this game. It's an excellent concept for a game and it is executed in the best way possible. The art looks really good (I really like pixel art) and the whole game is just good in general. I understand this is kinda in early development, which only makes me more excited for when this becomes a full game (I really hope it does). You guys got a lot of stuff right for chapter one, just keep this moving and try not to lose track of the story and accidentally make it bad. Congratulations, you got me to write a full review. I literally never do these, but this game has so much promise that I really wanted to support it. Please don't give up on it, this game is gold. You just gotta keep working on it, and soon you'll have a diamond (i don't think that's how that works, but you get the point).
cool game
Before I played Deep Night Detective, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
