"Deep Night Detective - Chapter One" is is not a game. It's an advertisement for a product called "Deep Night Detective". Deep Night Detective is a godawfully bad 2D pixelcrap platformer punctuated with utterly cringey detective e-book "narrative" written at junior high school anime club dropout levels. The reception of this advertisement was so bad that the developer finally seems to have gotten the idea that there's actually no demand on Steam for a 2D pixelcrap platformer punctuated with utterly cringey detective e-book "narrative" written at junior high school anime club dropout levels. But this isn't completely relevant because this is not Deep Night Detective, it's just an advertisment for it, so it's not correct to try to review that completely distinct product. We must instead review this for what it is... an advertisement. If you enjoy advertisements, you can consume them for free on the web or on Youtube without needing to add them to your game library, download them, and then launch the advertising. It's impossible in a general sense to recommend people should do that over playing real, full games on Steam, and that applies here with "Deep Night Detective - Chapter One" too. Usually the purpose of these advertisements is to get you to shell out money to the developer to buy the full product, but the developer hasn't bothered actually making a product you can buy, leaving this as an advertisement for nothing. We must question what value this pointless advertising has for gamers... and the answer is "none". Due to the poor public response amongst gamers for this advertisement, it seems unlikely the developer will go on to make the full product. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. As an advertisement, this is only free in the same way that adverts on Youtube and banner ads in your browser are. This is a game demo that's been dumped on Steam to advertise another Steam store page in the hopes of raking in some cash. Just because advertisements are free, doesn't mean they're worth your time. It's important to understand there's a formal process to create a demo/page for a game which hasn't been followed here: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/application/demos While it might seem like an inocuous mistake, publishing demos and advertisements as if they are full games is misleading and in some ways harmful. This advertisement is taking up marketing space and visibility that would be better made available to a developer that's done the right thing and created a full game. Instead, that visibility is given over to a demo/advert that's been published incorrectly and is polluting the marketplace. It's unclear if this mistake was made through incompetence or a deliberate intent to mislead gamers. Often developers may choose to incorrectly publish demo/advertisements as separate games as a cheap way to bypass paying Valve for marketing presence on the Steam front page, which may seem clever to them, but it's harmful behaviour and it's not good for gamers. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 9 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Advertisements and incorrectly published demos don't add +1 to your game collector count, they aren't full games. It's impossible for me to recommend this incorrectly published advertising spam to gamers, you deserve better than adverts.

Barely playable mess.
i really like the game all and all, i think there needs to be more than just one route, like its called a metroidvania but right now its just a platformer. if NPCs werent always in the same spots it would be better bc like after saving the maid why wouldnt i just tell salazar that theres a critically injured person? that kinda took my imersion away. the storys fantastic so far, i would like to see more mechanics with and without the coat, like the REALLY SCARY red eye mfs. also dont have all the powerups be demon based that would be kinda lazy methinks. (or rather dont have most of the powerups locked behind boss battles) i like the "your turn to die" type encounter with vallarie (but having multiple roots for diffrent viable outcomes would be way to much to ask but it would be so cool) the buttons were not shown at all to me and the button changer did not work. so i used A,S,D,E, And the arrow keys. oh i did not know what that one potion did at all could not figure it out. mabey it gave me a log entry (witch is a really cool idea) Once over, i really like the game and its story but give it clear controls, a larger map/ winding routs (wich is what i bet ur doing), and have the NPC's move or have different dialogue after major events happen. Thanks for makin this it was really fun!
Excellent concept and the game itself looks great but the controls are busted to say the least. No explanation for half the controls and if you progress far enough you can no longer move past certain platforms because it will not let you move down thru platforms
was really enjoying the game, absolutely amazing, but then I can't finish the final investigation as the game says I've gathered no clues despite having done everything. won't give up on franchise, would love to see this in full one day but this bug was really disappointing as I didn't get to finish

iT IS GOOD. lOVE iT. Oops Caps Lock.
First up this game takes longer than 20 to 30 minutes more like one to two hours. The style is lovely and the controls are fluid. In terms of story this is a great prove of concept for a ghost detective investigating paranormal cases. This chapter also provides an interesting start to the present case. This could easily be an introduction to metroidvania and investigation games for those only familiar with one of those. However the bugs make this rather tedious. You have to set the controls every time you boot up the game and if you loose the final fight you have to restart the game because of a bug. Loose a few times and you'll understand how annoying this can get. All in all I'm giving this a recommendation and am looking forward to further chapters, however I expect these bugs to be ironed out by that time.
