"Decoherence" is a sincerely made and genuine product that's a real bargain (because it's free). This is a unique spin on TD mechanics using constructible, mobile defenses rather than static towers, and it comes delivered as a polished and complete product. I might find it a "maybe" product if they had some kind of insane price on it, but given how much you get here for nothing, I still think there's insanity going on... insane value, that is. The graphics in this game are really quite good, which at least makes the game look more appealing. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. Here, you get a reasonably even match, enough to give this a pass. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $10 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Which I find to be a bit of a surprise. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. Most of the time I'd say that's because it's a bad product, but here, it's a bit of a mystery to me. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Yes, believe it or not. While this is far from a perfect game, the deficiencies and drawbacks can be overlooked due to the zero up front price and the value you get out of it. It's greater than the sum of its parts, and worth downloading if you're a fan of this kind of gaming experience.

need story mode.
Decoherence is a tactical action-strategy hybrid developed and published by Efecto Studios (Efecto Estudios SAS) that carves out a distinctive identity by merging modular robot construction with real-time arena combat. Rather than focusing purely on reflex-driven action or purely on abstract strategy, the game thrives in the tension between preparation and execution. Players are tasked with designing custom combat robots from a wide selection of components, configuring their behavior and loadouts before deploying them into fast-paced matches where plans are tested under pressure. The result is an experience that rewards both careful engineering and moment-to-moment adaptability. The core of Decoherence lies in its modular robot-building system. Players assemble units by selecting chassis types, weapons, propulsion systems, and support modules, each affecting movement, survivability, and combat performance. Every decision carries weight, as resource limits force trade-offs between firepower, durability, and utility. A heavily armored unit may withstand punishment but struggle with mobility, while a lighter, faster design can harass opponents but risks quick destruction if caught. This balancing act encourages experimentation and iterative refinement. Crafting a squad that works cohesively rather than as isolated units becomes central to long-term success. Beyond hardware customization, Decoherence introduces behavioral programming elements that deepen its strategic layer. Players can assign commands and priorities to their robots, influencing how they respond during battle. Some units can be set to guard specific points, others to aggressively pursue enemies, and support bots may be configured to maintain distance while providing assistance. This system allows for emergent strategies and creative tactics. Watching a carefully designed formation execute its programmed roles effectively can be immensely satisfying, especially when it counters an opponent’s approach through foresight rather than raw firepower. Once combat begins, the perspective shifts to a top-down arena where players can either observe their strategic setup unfold or directly control a single robot in real time. This dual-layer gameplay creates a dynamic rhythm. The pre-match planning phase demands analytical thinking, while the battle phase tests adaptability and quick decision-making. Taking control of a unit allows for precise maneuvers and clutch plays, but doing so means temporarily relinquishing oversight of the broader battlefield. This tension between macro-level strategy and micro-level action is one of Decoherence’s defining strengths. The game offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, broadening its appeal. In single-player, players face AI opponents in structured challenges that gradually increase in complexity. These encounters serve as testing grounds for new builds and strategies, encouraging experimentation without the unpredictability of human competition. Multiplayer, on the other hand, highlights the depth of customization and tactical creativity, as players adapt to diverse enemy compositions. While the online community may be modest in size, the competitive design framework ensures that each encounter can feel distinct. Visually, Decoherence adopts a clean and functional sci-fi aesthetic. Arenas are designed for clarity, ensuring that units, projectiles, and environmental features remain readable even during chaotic engagements. Robot models are distinct enough to convey their roles at a glance, and the user interface provides accessible control over complex systems without overwhelming players. The presentation prioritizes gameplay readability over visual excess, aligning with the game’s tactical focus. Pacing in Decoherence is brisk. Matches are typically short, creating a loop of build, deploy, evaluate, and refine. This structure encourages continuous improvement, as players quickly see the strengths and weaknesses of their designs. Losses feel instructive rather than punishing, often revealing subtle inefficiencies or vulnerabilities in a build. The iterative nature of this loop supports long-term engagement, particularly for players who enjoy optimizing systems and experimenting with unconventional strategies. One of the most compelling aspects of Decoherence is the freedom it grants players to express creativity through design. There is no single dominant strategy; different maps and opponent compositions demand varied solutions. A balanced squad might excel in one arena but struggle in another with tighter corridors or different objective layouts. This environmental variability reinforces adaptability and prevents stagnation. The ability to surprise opponents with unexpected configurations further enhances the strategic depth. Overall, Decoherence stands as a thoughtful and inventive blend of modular engineering and real-time tactical combat. Its layered systems encourage experimentation, strategic foresight, and reactive decision-making in equal measure. While it may not command a massive player base, its design offers a rich and rewarding experience for those drawn to customization-driven strategy games. By combining detailed preparation with engaging arena battles, Decoherence delivers a distinctive gameplay loop that emphasizes both intelligence and execution, making it a standout entry within the indie strategy-action space. Rating: 7/10
