Deathlike Awakening has a horrifying atmosphere, overwhelming darkness, creepy scenery and it's scary as hell. Although it has some bugs - normal for early access, it still is a cool gaming experience. Great game for VR. I can't wait for an update.

Deathlike: Awakening, developed and published by Cybreath, is a first-person survival horror experience that leans heavily into psychological tension and atmospheric dread rather than action-driven gameplay. From the moment the game begins, it establishes a sense of isolation and vulnerability, placing the player in a desolate environment haunted by a persistent and hostile presence. Instead of empowering players with weapons or combat tools, the game strips them down to their most basic instincts: observe, listen, and survive. This design philosophy defines the entire experience and shapes how players approach every corridor, room, and shadow. The narrative framework is deliberately minimalistic. Rather than presenting lengthy cutscenes or extensive exposition, the story unfolds through environmental cues and subtle contextual hints. You find yourself trapped in a forsaken location that feels both abandoned and corrupted, and your objective revolves around locating and breaking mystical seals that bind you to this nightmare. This clear but understated goal provides structure while maintaining a sense of mystery. The lack of overt storytelling allows the environment itself to carry much of the emotional weight, encouraging players to interpret the setting through atmosphere rather than dialogue. Gameplay emphasizes stealth and awareness above all else. The unseen threat stalking you cannot be confronted directly, which shifts the focus toward careful movement and strategic pauses. One of the more distinctive mechanics involves remaining still and facing your fear when danger approaches, turning what would typically be a moment of panic into a test of composure. This inversion of typical survival horror instincts creates a unique tension. Instead of fleeing immediately, players sometimes need to resist the urge to run, heightening the psychological pressure during encounters. Every footstep feels deliberate, and every sound cue becomes significant. Visually, Deathlike: Awakening relies on dim lighting and oppressive environments to generate unease. Darkened corridors, sparse light sources, and heavy shadows create a constant sense of uncertainty. While the graphical fidelity may not rival larger-budget horror titles, the art direction effectively supports the game’s tone. The design prioritizes mood over spectacle, using contrast and negative space to encourage imagination. Often, what you cannot see becomes more frightening than what is visible, and the game capitalizes on that uncertainty to maintain suspense. The sound design plays an equally crucial role in shaping the horror experience. Ambient drones, distant noises, and sudden auditory shifts create a landscape where silence itself becomes unnerving. The absence of consistent background music amplifies environmental sounds, making each creak or echo feel intentional and potentially threatening. Because there is no combat system to distract from these details, players are forced to pay close attention to audio cues, further deepening immersion and tension. One notable feature of Deathlike: Awakening is its support for virtual reality. In VR mode, the sense of presence intensifies dramatically, as the confined spaces and looming darkness surround the player completely. The horror becomes more immediate and personal, transforming simple exploration into a nerve-wracking ordeal. Even outside of VR, the game maintains a strong immersive quality, but the added dimensionality of VR enhances the fear factor and underscores the developer’s commitment to atmospheric design. Despite its strengths in tension and atmosphere, the game’s relatively limited scope may leave some players wanting more variety. The environments, while effective, do not expand into a sprawling world, and replay value is somewhat constrained once objectives are understood. However, for those who appreciate focused, contained horror experiences, this compact structure can be seen as a strength rather than a flaw. The game does not overextend itself or dilute its impact with unnecessary mechanics. Overall, Deathlike: Awakening stands as a focused and moody survival horror title that prioritizes psychological unease over action. Its stealth-based gameplay, distinctive fear-facing mechanic, and atmospheric presentation combine to create an experience that feels intimate and tense. While it may not deliver expansive storytelling or high-end production values, it succeeds in crafting a haunting environment where survival depends on patience, composure, and attentiveness. For players drawn to slow-burn horror and immersive tension, it offers a memorable and unsettling journey into darkness. Rating: 6/10
