Not an awful game but overly repetitive and massively overpriced for its content.
I received a key from Atari for this game and livestreamed my first look on twitch. I feel Days of Doom falls short in some aspects, and is overall not a game I'd recommend when compared to similar titles. I'd like to go over what I like before I get into it though.
The Good
- The art was good, nothing looked bad or drew attention in a bad way. - The music was nice, it fit the setting. - The core of the combat was solid*, I will touch on the rest of combat in a bit. - The travel map is easy to understand, and reminds me of FTL's travel system. Don't fix what ain't broken. - The overall style and aesthetic was cohesive, nothing felt out of place.
My Issues
- Classes feel unequal and unbalanced. I can tell which ideas the devs liked and which ones felt like they had to be there. Hydromancer was a really cool concept and a lot of fun to play, but the base warrior was boring and outclassed by any other class I touched when it came down to it. - The failstate for running out of gas is an instant game over. Which is fine, but is ultimately anti-climatic and boring; Especially when I have seen other games make that an interesting problem to solve (FTL and Death Road to Canada to name a couple). - The Reptilians. As an enemy, they are fine, interesting even. The problem lies in how they were introduced. If they were introduced in a way that was them being byproduct of the apocalypse, or something else, it would be fine and I'd have no notes. Unfortunately, they are introduced as "The elite reptilians everyone knows were really in charge, back in the before times." This is an anti-semetic dog whistle, fascists love replacing "reptilians" with "jews". I'm going to give the devs the benefit of the doubt and assume it wasn't something that crossed their minds. It made me and members of my audience uncomfortable, however. - The game lacks anything that grabs my attention that other games have not done. There is nothing to pull me back to this game rather than a collection of similar titles that have better polished systems and things that stand out.
Final Thoughts
Days of Doom is a perfectly serviceable game that does it's thing. Unfortunately, that is all it does. It is a dish missing spice. I could not recommend this over other games of similar genre. 5/10, very bland, is only bad because it does not live up to it's potential.
This game is so unpolished, it should go back in developpement ! If you're here for difficulty go away and run ! I won my first run without losing anyone while doing multiple bad decisions and bad moves. (11 Achievement out of 20) I couldn't buy anything more than one more max team member at the end of it in term of permanent upgrade and i have clean most of each map... The game feel empty, unpolished and the fight are worthless... You start -> wait zombie to come to you -> use shield and CrowdControl while using the map to your advantage so less ennemy hit you -> you win with the celebratory "Victory" voiced by someone who is about to end is life. Rinse and repeat, it's so braindead because there is not any diversity in term of enemy or hazard impact, map too small but if it where bigger it will be even easier... Game fully unbalanced with broken items like one that heal you 50% of your total HP at the start of a fight if there is 5 or more ennemies which is green and easy to grab, character that can block every 3 turn for 3 attack and dissapear after 2 turn any attack coming to one mate, we get also a 50-75% heal at the end of each zone... Multiple bad game design, like the fact that you can't access your group inventory from shop or i'm blind, and so you need either to equip everything before a shop or sell, the game let you buy even if your full and the item dissapear (i lost about 200 scrap worth of good runes and still won easily and i'm not good in RPG)... or we got some bugs when you want to see enemy info it doesn't show and force me to switch my action to get my character action preview back, ... I feel ripped off, Seriously don't buy it unless it go down to 1/10 of it's actual price and it get updated, i come rarely this hard on a game but i had no expectation and i was disappointed... This game is empty like my soul !
I received a free key to check the game out on stream. The gameplay loop is similar to Faster Than Light with a touch of Darkest Dungeon, you have one massive and difficult map you need to get through while juggling fuel, food, and scrap. Along the way, there are random events that can trigger. You can decide how long you take on the map before you reach the boss of the area. You can't just avoid all fights on the way to the boss because you'll likely want to fight to gain xp and level up your characters in preparation for the boss fight. Sadly, I cannot recommend the game at full price. I feel that there are just a lot of half-baked mechanics to this game. The random events are fun for bit before they start to repeat twice or even thrice in a row. The combat system is interesting at first but then you see the enemies just ramp up in unpredictability and size. It has the perfect loop but I wanted more tactics to a tactical RPG. I do think this game is perfect for somebody out there who enjoys dying a lot and discovering enemy patterns while unlocking lots of meta progression serotonin.
Missing QOL
- Pressing alt and hovering over the enemy presents a menu that shows the tooltip but also the enemies movement range and attack range. Often times, the tooltip is covering the area of effect and makes it hard to read. Showing enemy movement range needs to be another toggle.
The Good
- The game looks great and the animations are fun. - Class skills are pretty fun and the runes that you find along the way are interesting. - The music is actually amazing and really nails the zombie game vibe! - Serotonin from lots of meta progression between runs. There's so much to unlock.
The Bad
- There's no balance. Enjoy the broken builds but also enjoy getting randomly dogpilled. - Damage mitigation and healing is so important to this game but opportunities are so rare. - The exact same random events often triggered twice in a row. - If you run out of the fuel, the game just ends. That simply isn't a fun way to end a run. - For a strategy game, Days of Doom holds back a lot of information. The game doesn't explain to you what areas of effect do or how elements interact. There are also certain hidden skills and death rattles to enemies. For example, the Amalgam Zombie splits into two after dying and you simply don't know which direction the pieces will fall out from. However, I think this could be a positive for people who like to discover strategy through death.
Технически игра работает хорошо: поддержка широких мониторов, быстрые клавиши. Правда, справки не нашел. С точки зрения геймплея весьма базово. Не увлекает, а судя по прокачке -- так и будет до самого конца. Если хочется похожего, то советую присмотреться к Shardpunk: Verminfall и Stories from the Outbreak (ранний доступ).
Certainly, there are hooks that might make you stick with the game, especially the one saying, that you just paid full „triple I“ price for a tactical toy, that feels like some small app for your ipad. It is not broken as such and may deliver numerous short sessions of passable entertainment, but it feels as early access, as they get. Recommended only to people that have low end PC's and massive craving for tactical roguelites, provided there's a sale and the game is 75% off.
If the tutorial is any indication, it has some balance issues, but it might turn out to be an interesting roguelike given enough time. The biggest issue I have is that it doesn't support ultrawide displays, and seeing black bars usually mean a game is uninstalled soon after.
I was looking forward to this one but as other reviewers mentioned it feels unfinished. I've refunded it and don't recommend it unless you don't mind waiting a long time for enemy turns to finish and don't mind poorly balanced gameplay. Definitely not worth the asking price even when it's on sale and it's too bad because it could have been something decent with just a bit more effort.
Fun and interesting game
