FULL DISCLOSURE - I'm the soundtrack composer for this game! Still, I couldn't resist seeing my work in action and trying the game out fully for myself so that I could give an honest opinion on it, and I'm glad I did. I've played Daisy Games' previous game, Hack Grid, and I have to say that Dark Sheep is a step above. Its sinister story makes the puzzles much more engaging, and I love that a premise as simple and innocent as herding and feeding sheep becomes so much more in a way that's not really expected from a casual puzzler. The great old school visuals really add to the experience, tying in well with the soundtrack (if I do say so myself!), and the controls are easy and intuitive. I'm not big on puzzle games on the whole, but I did find myself getting slightly addicted and thinking "go on, one more level". The difficulty gradient is decently gradual too, so there's no getting bored, or conversely, getting stuck too early on. Overall, it's a great game that's quick to whip out when you're looking to kill time, and it lends itself to both a 5 minute fiddle while you're waiting for something, and a longer session where you sit down and focus. The horror style story also just really elevates it from any old puzzler - if you like your challenges with a slice of murder, this is the game for you!
How come are there this little number of people that played this game? It is a definite recommendation for anyone searching for something out of bounds, a game that combines basic play elements along with unexpectedly alien setups with it. The basic disturbing and funny quality emerges from this contrasting features that game provides. A deviant flavor indeed.
For me, this is the perfect type of block pusher. The theme supports the mechanics. The puzzles require critical thinking, but feel like they can be solved organically without understanding the exact sequence in the designer's head. The levels feel like a series of modular interlocking puzzles where the order matters. The game is forgiving with undoes and continues. The story is delightfully dark and weird and unique in this genre. Love it. I'm looking forward to finishing this one. Definitely worth the price of admission.
The mechanics are pretty simple, but fun! The progression of the new mechanics feels satisfying, tho i dont think i'd want the game to be any longer than it is now. Its short enough to keep the gameplay fun, and long enough to feel like a full game. Aftermath took it up a notch with the guards, and i'd love to see more wacky fun mechanics in furture expansions. The focus on a new mechanic for a few levels before mixing it with the rest seemed good, so you didnt get overwhelmed. The change in goal in aftermath was good as well. Lastly i'd like to say the music ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slaps, and theres some pretty "twisted" moments in the story.
Clever games curator review: 7/10. A sokoban where the path that you push things matters at least as much as where they end up. You start off with sheep that must eat all the grass, never passing over a patch more than once. And by the end game you also have devils that must eat the fattened sheep. While it doesn’t feel like the most fresh design ever it definitely doesn’t feel like a generic and low-effort Sokoban clone either. While I enjoyed my time in this game to be sure, I also found it to be extremely uneven, with several notable flaws that brought the score down to 7/10. Depending on your tolerance for these issues, you may feel like even that is too kind. The puzzles are very casual at first. I doubt I needed more than one try to pass any of the first 15 levels, or even a single undo. And for the next 15 levels the unlimited undo was enough to allow me to charge in without too much planning and easily fix the occasional mistake that I made in the process. All of this built up to five surprisingly challenging end levels that were quite satisfying but also a huge leap of difficulty over what came before. I will say, however, even on the very easy levels I did have to think, it’s just that it was fairly easy to avoid painting yourself into an unwinnable corner. If you like your puzzle games with a constant heavy dose of brain hurt this is definitely not for you. The other thing to note is that many of the puzzles allow multiple solutions, which I actually think gives the player a greater sense of agency, but I understand that’s divisive. The only game aspect that is unambiguously bad is the soundtrack. It attempts to offer genuine C64 chiptunes, but that’s a hard genre to master and whoever did the music definitely failed. There’s about four different songs that play as background music in the levels and only one is decent, and at least two are literally painful to listen to. Arguably the graphics are also a fail, but here it probably comes down more to taste. I love a good retro pixel art tile set, but these rarely achieve that. At best they do the job and at worst they are both ugly and rather hard to interpret, such as the conventions for which color grass a particular sheep is allowed to consume. Finally, the store page gives a sense that this game has a story, plot line, and heavy theme, something that many Sokoban clones do not. Well what it does have is pretty thin, not that much more than a traditional Sokoban. That said, what there is adds a little bit of extra enjoyment. However, I feel that the store page portrays it as having much more than it does. It does feel a little weird to be harsh on a Sokoban for not having much story since 99% have none. So I am inclined to give them a pass on this. But if it’s important to you, know that there’s not much here.
I really enjoyed the game! It gave me a lot of C64 vibes and everything fitted that theme extremely well! And well, it has quite some suprises too!
That first axe murder moment will never be forgotten XD
Overall a great experience, some cool and tricky puzzles that were quite challenging from time to time, and a great soundtrack!
There's a method in coming up with an interesting premise for a puzzle game and I'm not exaggerating when I say Daisy Games is a master of the art. Dark Sheep already came with 40 levels but recently added Aftermath campaign adds another 20! It's huge but never gets boring. Logic-based sequence puzzles with new mechanics introduced every few levels, adding to the complexity. Daisy Games just *gets* puzzles and Dark Sheep's a brilliant example. Great retro art and sound. A small puzzle game with very simple rules that still provide a decent challenge. The mechanics and graphics are easily understood and never hide some obscure tricks, while they provide a perfect clarity on what is needed to complete the level. The levels are short enough so it's very easy to play the game during a short break without having to invest significant time into it. Definitely worth getting if you like Sokoban-style puzzle games
Fed sheep. Captured Sheep. Murdered someone to get to sheep. Made purple Sheep. Sacrificed Sheep. 10/10 - Would sheep again.
