About
Dark Eyes: Super Soldier is a fast-paced 2D sci-fi shooter set on the front lines of humanity’s war against the Delma—an alien species known as the “Dark Eyes” for their ominous, black dark eyes. As Earth’s Space Defense Force (ESDF) launches a desperate counter-offensive, you fight 'boots on the ground' alongside marines, push through massive battles, and uncover the truth behind the 'real' enemy threat.
Armed with an expanding arsenal of futuristic weapons, you’ll dodge, jump, and maneuver through intense combat scenarios where positioning and reflexes matter. You are one of many, a super soldier trained to fight the aliens threatening all of humanity. Your name does not matter because you are just a number. What matters is what you can do to change the tide of a losing battle. The game presents this in a fun side scrolling shooter style with simple controls that require almost no learning curve. Your soldier can move left and right and shoot using several weapons. The machine gun is available from the start, and you soon gain access to a shotgun and a grenade launcher. All of these weapons use ammunition that can run out quickly. If you do not find ammo packs in the field, you must rely on a sidearm with unlimited ammo. However, it needs to reload, is fairly weak, and fires only one bullet per button press. Two additional abilities are jumping and ducking, both intended to help you avoid enemy fire. In practice, there is not much strategy involved. Ducking is rarely useful because you cannot shoot while in that position, and enemies fire so frequently that waiting for an opening is not enjoyable. Jumping allows you to avoid the grenades that enemies throw often, but it is usually easier to simply bump into them and make them roll away from you. There are seven missions in total, and you can play any of them from the start. This is not recommended because the game contains a lot of story and lore that enrich the experience. The missions follow a narrative that will not make much sense if you play them out of order. The story becomes especially interesting once you discover that you were created using alien DNA, which ties directly into the central identity crisis theme. You can read several detailed entries that explain almost everything about what is happening, watch a few cutscenes, and hear plenty of dialogue from various characters during missions. Everyone is fully voiced with subtitles, although the quality is somewhat inconsistent. Radio chatter is less noticeable because it is meant to sound distorted, but conversations between characters face to face suffer from the same effect, making them sound as if they were recorded at home. You may also need to adjust the volume settings because the music is quite loud and can drown out voices that are already difficult to hear. The missions themselves are fairly similar, although you do different things, such as sneak past sentries or defend against enemy waves. But most often, you move forward, shoot everything that appears, and replenish your health and ammunition at supply crates along the way. What keeps things interesting is that the game does a good job of making you feel like part of a larger conflict rather than a lone superhuman capable of doing everything alone. Squads occasionally appear to provide support and, at times, act as a bit of a meat shield. In conclusion, although the gameplay is fairly basic and the game can be finished quickly, it offers an interesting story that helps it stand out from becoming just another generic shooter.
