Although I've seen several negative comments, so far this has worked really well for me. I usually have the pdf open of the game so I can look up monsters or treasure or whatever is needed. I like that you can move windows around and drag/drop them. It really takes the load off the bookkeeping which I think is awesome. Given I have every hardback book for D100 Dungeon, I hope they continue development to add in the adventure companion and other supplements later. Well done!
doesn't work and if it does work it doesn't work...and how those other 2 reviewers put 4+ hours into it, is a mystery to me. they surely deserve a refund. i just know it doesn't work. the paper and pen game is great fun but this isn't.
Playing on an iMac with the latest chips.
I wasn't sure I wanted a computer companion for this game, because I enjoy playing it with pencil and paper, but this companion really helps to streamline certain repetitive tasks, like combat rolls, while still being completely compatible with rolling your own dice if you want. You can roll physical dice and manually input every roll in the game, or let the companion roll for you. I like that you don't have to choose one way or the other, you can go back and forth on a roll-by-roll basis if you'd like. Sometimes I like to hear that good ole clickety-clack, so I'll roll manually for a while and then seamlessly go back to letting the companion do it. The best part of using the companion though, for me anyway, is not having to constantly erase and re-write things that are constantly changing throughout the game. The developer is extremely responsive and helpful with the few issues I have had (nothing major or game breaking).
I am editing my review. I originally reviewed the game when it first came out and did not recommend the game due to the myriad of bugs and technical issues. Those appear to have now been fixed. Here's the bottom line. I would recommend this game only to the die hard D100 dungeon fan. Book keeping has always been my biggest problem with D100 and the problem is that the book keeping is what makes the game both amazing and tedious. I would not play d100 dungeon but for the book keeping (as that's the depth and fun), but I also dread playing d100 because of the book keeping (as my poor paper sheets get holes erased through them). Well, this computer companion solves that issue for you. It allows you to play the game and keep all the book keeping on your computer and it does it well. So if you, like me, love d100, but hate all the paper book keeping, then this is a great product for you as it allows you to do all of your book keeping electronically. The caveat being I think the price is way to high. To be clear, this IS NOT an independent game. This is a $12 add on to your game. You cannot play this on it's own, you need the rules in the books. On top of that, each expansion you have to buy both the rulebook, and you have to spend an additional $12 on the DLC for this web app. I think that's a little BS. I get the devs need to paid for their work, but it seems like the price is way higher than what is reasonable. It should be $5 per book tops. I can buy full blown games on Steam that are 40+ hours for $15, I don't see why I should have to pay $12 for what is basically a computer spread sheet for a game I need to already own. So the TLDR: At this price I recommend for only the hardcore D100 fans.
I played the pen and paper version of d100 off and on a bit and it's a fun game but keeping track of everything by hand does take a bit of time, plus it's easy to mess up occasionally when you're handling everything manually. I tried this PC Companion for the game out a while back but it was still a bit buggy at the time and I ended up refunding it. Recently though I noticed it had undergone a number of updates since I originally purchased it so I decided to give it another shot and the bugs I encountered seem to have been ironed out and the program is working pretty seamlessly at this point which is great! Basically, the TLDR is if you enjoy playing the pen and paper version of d100 Dungeon, and aren't requiring using the later expansions yet, then this Companion is well worth it. It makes playing the game MUCH faster and eliminates any chance of human error in the process. I can play through a quest in about an hour or less with this companion, including doing everything in town afterward, something that by hand would probably be 2-3 hours or so. You'll still need a copy of the actual game rules to play since the Companion doesn't tell you what literally every item does or every map symbol means, etc, but it does fill in literally every sheet and all the map just like you would by hand with pen and paper so you really don't need to look at the actual rules all that often (especially once you've played for a while). I've only been playing the base game rules so far, so I can't comment much on the two DLC expansions that are available other than to say they do exist in this Companion if you're looking to add them in. The developer also mentioned on the forums the fourth expansion (which is a big book of additional rules basically) is under development and will probably be available later this year. Given how much time the developer seems to have devoted to this already I'm fairly confident that their goal is to eventually include all the expansion content down the road (including hopefully the World Builder over-land exploration expansion which seems pretty fun!)
If you like D100 Dungeon and prefer not to manually track everything you need to track, then this is the program for you! Small price to pay to save hours of your time. I only wish the developers would update this program to work with Book 6 World Builder...that would be an amazing addition to an already excellent program!
Even though I am all for pencil and paper. Sometimes it can be difficult to set it up, so you dont. But with this app I can play in no time. Great and fast response on bug report.
This game is very playable and very enjoyable. Looking forward to updates and additional DLC.
Great game, with many opportunities to create the best experience with your imagination.
