This game is a gem. It's fun, funny, polished, the controls are responsive, I encountered no bugs. It is a bit short but, very impressive for a free game.
Warning: Asset Flip! This is a Digital Homicide style asset flip, the "developer" took a bunch of Unity Asset Store assets and dumped them on a basic Unity platformer template.
"Culinary Wizard" is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This is perhaps slightly more than just a basic Unity platformer game blueprint with a cooking skin on it... but not much more. This is at the very least a "Digital Homicide" style asset flip. The use of a bunch of flipped assets for the pixel backdrops and tilesets is plagiarism at best, and it shows little effort or creativity went into making yet another garbage platformer on Steam. An example of the flipped/stolen assets here is the Pixel Art Platformer Village House by the real developer, Cainos. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. Insultingly, the developer insists that you should play this with a console peasant children's toy gamepad instead of KB+M. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're designing games for. It's the responsibility of the developer to ensure the game runs well on the platform they're selling it on, with the primary peripherals that PC gamers use. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. Most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's usually some kind of monetisation, from nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, to any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but at least in this case the "developer" isn't trying to get YOUR money for someone else's Unity assets. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 6 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Well, gamers can smell an asset flip a mile away. Given that this free title won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? Nope. While it won't necessarily cost you money, the time and hard drive space it requires could be better invested in one of the many higher-quality alternatives on Steam.
