https://youtu.be/tJUrwEVuFaE 'Crystal Picnic' makes a solid effort to deliver on it's comical style to craft an action RPC, the cute characters match the world well. The experience however is heavily crippled by rough edges and a lack of polish, especially with the combat AI and UX.
PROS -Sturdy (few bugs so far) -Good story -Good/unique characters -pleasant/unique art style (just very nice to look at) CONS -Movement is a bit wacky sometimes -Perspective can be strange at some points.

Tags: Sidescroll Brawler Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Childish presentation. Nauseating camera. Improper handling of progression. Maze-like maps. Respawning foes. Uneven engine clockspeed. This is a childhood saturday morning type rpgmaker shell in which you go from map to map using a mario-style overworld area selection, then do topdown navigation in real time until a NPC spots you. At which point the game pauses and freezes you allowing the NPC to make contact with you and start a combat instance. Combat instances spawns a number of foes with imprecise hitboxing around a procedurally generated simple platformer map in which you button mash your foes out of existence. Foes spawn frozen for a few seconds allowing you to kill a few before the match starts. Birds still attack during their death animation. You also have a coop/tag team mechanic in which the AI mostly just lets whomever you are not controlling get tanked on and occasionally attacks seemingly on a whim. Since foes constantly respawn you will constantly have to go through these, without proper itemization or experience that heavy grind comes across as a completely pointless waste of time. Since the camera is heavily zoomed in and the map design involves what amounts to tunnels going through impassable terrain you will constantly be running around in circles disoriented, even as you try to follow a simple direciton such as: Navigate out of this map through the west side to reach an Ant Colony for example. The dialogue itself is long winded when it does show up, trying to underline the friendly banter between the two anthropomorphized animals. There is a sprinkle of 4th wall breaking humor, self ware jokes about the creep nature of the oversized animals, and vague mentions of this being a feudal land with knights but none of it really sticks out as all that compelling The game features custom assets which is somewhat commendable, however the run speed is inconsistent depending on the direction you run in (you run fast left right than up and down). The pacing of the combat sections and general pacing also felt like it was too high, as if modern hardware caused the game to be clocked faster than is comfortable for the eye or for nice action flow. The constant switch between RPGMaker style, topdown, and then to sidescroll brawling was also rather jarring. Conclusion: There are little to no redeeming value in terms of entertainment quality, polish of the mechanics or even the originality of the theme getting lost in the unclear target demographics. The game will be too infantile for anyone past 7 but will be too confusing and frustrating to navigate for very young kids. As such I find myself driven to remove local content permanently and hide it from library for declutter.
