Extremely impressive for a GoldSrc game but suffers from awful backtracking and sometimes just bad game design in general as well as a very limited inventory system. Overall, it's good, but hasn't aged well. (And the dev is allegedly a creep)

The team did an amazing job; superb experience! Even if you've seen your favourite youtuber play it, I cannot recommend more that you play it for yourself.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Cry of Fear is absolutely, without a doubt the scariest game I have ever played. Beyond the fact it was free, I really had no reason not to pick this game up, especially with such positive reviews. What ended up happening was crawling through each level at a snails pace, staring daggers into each tight corner with the same horror like they had personally stabbed and killed a personal family member. Maybe I am exaggerating a little, but looking back on my experience I honestly think it felt like that. There has not been a horror game I have played so far that has such an oppressive atmosphere as Cry of Fear. You could blame it on the limitations of working in the Half Life engine, the graphics and audio being low quality enough to leave the gritty, terrifying details to the imagination, but I do think even without those limitations that it is just a good horror experience. There isn't an annoying focus on the monsters that takes away the experience of encountering them yourself, leading to natural, unscripted feeling moments like you actually are fighting for your life against these disturbing creatures from god knows where. And the designs are pretty disturbing, again, the graphics only tell part of the story, so when you catch glimpses of whatever your fighting, and you don't really know what you're seeing, that's just enough information to really bring the details out of your own imagination. Jumpscares are also heavy throughout, the audio low quality sounding to aid this, as though it peaked the microphone it was recorded on, leading to a more visceral, raw, and bone chilling sound. As if the jumpscares alone weren't scary enough lol. I haven't played any of the older Half Life games, or really any of the games using its engine, so I don't have any other experience to base myself off of when talking about the gameplay, so I don't think I can talk any more in depth about it beyond just that I thought it felt good. Resources were few and far between, leading to that classic Resident Evil panic of knowing how many resources you have, and how little you know about the area ahead. Guns were all unique and situational in their use, it was all good. Finally, leading to the story, which is in depth enough to get you to piece things together by the end, but vague enough to keep you questioning and questioning all throughout your time spent here in Stockholm. Which, once you do really figure out how the story unravels, it is a very bleak and depressing story of a young adult having to live with a disability, his mental struggles, how he sees his life from the perspective of one bound to his wheelchair, its all so, so sad. And its not like it comes out of the blue either, the whole game you feel bad for Simon, what he is going through, so its impact isn't lost in the reveal. From gameplay, to story, to horror mastery, Cry of Fear is a prime example on how to actually frighten a player, and how to tell a psychological horror story without compromising one or the other. And for free, this is absolutely a must play for anyone looking for a great indie horror game in general. 8.5/10, the scariest bit is that this is real footage of Stockholm, Sweden.
