Awesome
I recommend this game with a big caveat. I strongly disliked the gameplay, and played through the game with cheats. I recommend it because it's a memorable experience that stand out from most other games, movies and stories. It's a well polished game and I couldn't find any bugs. The voice acting is great, and fits the atmosphere perfectly. It seems like a mix of Dead Space and the movie 12 Monkies with Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis from 1995 (a time traveler that goes back in time to figure out the cause of an apocalyptic disease). I love the slow pacing and the whole vibe/atmosphere. I was close to "not getting it" (equals to not liking it), because I missed the detail regarding charged shots. Using those is crucial. Then I almost started to like the game, and even recommending it... That was until the monsters suddenly became numerous. And I died a lot. Then I died some more, until it wasn't fun anymore. So I started to cheat. And the cheats didn't help me enjoy the combat more, they only made me willing to push through. So during my entire playthrough, I pretty much hated the combat. It's funny how people wonder what they should waste their ammo on, since they have too much of it according to some other reviews. I did not once have that problem. I was always short on ammo despite charging and hitting every bullet, and exploring every nook and cranny, and maxing out the fire power of my weapons. One single monster (not even a boss!) required four full mags to kill!!! They are bullet sponges, and they are plenty! Ignoring the combat, the story itself issn't remarkable. It can even be a bit disappointing once you have finished it, due to it's banality. What seemed large and complex in the beginning turned out to be small and simple. But it's the way it's told that makes all the difference. It's drip fed to you during your playthrough, and the truth shrouded in mystery. If they would only leave it "large and complex" I would be much happier. But I was happy nonetheless. So it's a memorable experience that I recommend if you can get it for less than $20.
