Conqueror's Blade is a free to play medieval action strategy game that puts me in the role of a warlord while I fight alongside my own troops. The main battles are 15 versus 15 sieges, so I am not just controlling one character and swinging a sword around. I have to fight while also commanding units, capturing objectives and trying to push the enemy back. That combination is what makes the game stand out for me. The battles are easily the best part. I can personally get involved in the fighting and then give orders to my troops when I need them somewhere else. Infantry, ranged units and cavalry all behave differently, so I have to think about what I bring into a battle and where I use them. When a charge actually works and I see my units break through an enemy position, it feels really satisfying. There is a huge amount of variety in the units too. The game now has more than 100 historical troops inspired by different cultures, including knights, samurai, Viking style warriors, Spartan units and Chinese dynastic troops. I like being able to build different lineups because it gives me something to experiment with instead of simply finding one army and using it forever. The larger world gives the game another layer that I enjoy. I can join a House, work with other players and take part in wars over territory and fiefs. There are also different PvE and PvP activities, so the game is not entirely dependent on jumping into the same siege battle over and over again. The current Three Kingdoms season also adds another historical setting to the game, which gives the battlefield some extra variety. The biggest problem for me is the amount of grinding involved. There are a lot of units, upgrades, equipment and progression systems, and getting everything I want can take a long time. I also have to learn which units are actually useful in different situations, so the game can feel pretty overwhelming when I first start playing. The free to play side is another thing I have mixed feelings about. I can start for free and the current newcomer system gives me 13 core units, free respecs before level 200 and access to a weekly max level unit rotation. That is a lot better than being thrown into the game with nothing, but there are still plenty of paid packs and purchases around the progression system. I can enjoy the game without spending money, but the monetisation is definitely noticeable. The combat can also become chaotic. There are so many units, effects and players fighting at once that sometimes it is difficult to understand exactly why I lost a fight. I like the huge battles, but they can occasionally feel more like controlled chaos than carefully planned strategy. The learning curve is pretty steep, especially when I start getting into the more advanced unit combinations. Overall, Conqueror's Blade is one of the more interesting free medieval multiplayer games I have played because it combines personal combat with actual troop command. The huge battles, wide selection of units and territory warfare give me plenty to work towards, while the grind and free to play systems stop it from being as easy to recommend as it could be. Once I get comfortable with commanding my army, though, there is something really satisfying about watching a plan come together on a massive battlefield. Rating: 7.6/10
