The setting seemed fun, but It's not a great game. Combat is not hard. Combat is unfair and unplayable on the normal difficulty. NPCs WILL kill a charachter of yours in two turn easily, while you'll take multiple turns for you to kill a single NPC. Your party size is tied to your charisma btw, and it takes a lot of investment in to it to take one more person with you. The quest log is so barebones, unless you take notes in a notepad, it's impossible to follow. Stealth is limited to pre-determined encounters where you'll start a stealth sequence, which in some cases, is utterly meaning less, as all enemies are facing the starting point. Would refund if I could.
I've played about 20 hrs of this game now (in offline mode) and I think it's a wonderful game. Combat is well fleshed out, and the variety of non-combat skills is tremendous! Probably 80% of would-be fights have conditions under which they can be avoided, which is pretty spectacular compared to most RPG games where everything is secondary to combat. There's a lot of nice convenience/QoL features that I like, especially the travel system, there's very little mandatory running around. The world is very interesting I think, and it's presented in a way that draws you in. I'd highly recommend the game for people interested in the setting. Gamplay is similar to other turn-based tactics games, especially Shadowrun and Wasteland.
Highly Recommended! It's a fantastic sci-fi CRPG from the small team at Iron Tower Studio. I loved the immersive generation ship setting and the multiple plot routes that let your choices really matter. The turn-based combat feels punchy and satisfying without getting overly complicated or punishing in its mechanics. It's awesome to see passionate small studios like this competing on Steam and delivering such a thoughtful, old-school RPG experience. If you enjoy deep worldbuilding and meaningful decisions, definitely check it out!
I imagine if you play CRPGs for the tactical combat, you might like Colony Ship. From a narrative perspective, though... ehhh. It's cool that they're trying something original, but it doesn't work. The game has different 'alignment' meters for things like chaos v order or atheism v theism, but reducing a character's ideals to a 2 dimensional scale is the death of nuance. It was shallow and just led you to pick dialog choices based on color in Mass Effect; it's still shallow and does the same thing here. The writing also doesn't live up to what they want to do. The minimum required to have an interesting conversation about the place of faith in society is getting faith right, and they don't: the religious options usually sound like the POV of a crazy fanatic. The very first priest you meet asks you to go rescue a thug that was trying to shake someone down for money. If making a character that looks like you or fits a particular image is important to you—well, the character models are really ugly and customization is very bare bones. The game itself is aesthetically unattractive; the entire first map is full of containers piled on top of one another at different levels, and it's easy to get lost in terms of where you are and where you're doing. There's so little that's visually distinct. All in all, it feels like the game gets wrong everything that Rogue Trader gets right.
XCOM when it comes to missng or bing hit, quest, they tell you to meet a guy in a diffrent area but dont tell you that you have to do 5 side quest to get there, Venders dont restock, if you get to a area and theres another quest item in that area but you dont have the quest, you cant get it, and it dostnt say why The quest are so bland, go to area and talk to this person, that it, they dont tell you the 20 steps in between. This Game is LAZYLY DONE, Graphics, game play and player cust is basically Fallout one. You will have to Goggle ever Quest.
Colony ship is sitting snugly along some of my favourite crpgs Its a solid rpg where taking the pacifist route is not always the best option to things. An example that comes to mind is the cargo bay where i talked my way out of it and it ended up being controlled by one of the three overarching factions. I really adore this games and i would say its worth full price if you're a fan of: fallout 1&2, underrail and/or tyranny 9/10
its made by iron tower, what more do you want? [strike] colony ship for sale, cheap [/strike]
I don't understand how this Game is so highly rated. To the point where I don;t think I can even trust reviews anymore. Have people just learned to accept mediocrity? This game number one is incredibly soulless. It tries so hard to make you feel like you are making choices and decisions and those decisions matter. But most of the dialogue in the game is poorly written in my opinion. Then there are the mechanics in the game. There is no "map" just a list of fast travel locations. Which makes it difficult to track where you have been and where you haven't been. Then there are all the points on the game play map where you have to click to go through or climb. What is the point of it besides just slowing you down and making you feel like you are exploring. Who makes a game with damaged equipment yet only allows you to repair just one specific type of equipment and prevents you from repairing 99% of anything else. Then there is the combat. All computer games "cheat" to make it more difficult to win a battle when you have higher level characters, but this game totally ignores the percentages it claims during combat just to draw the combat out and to make it feel more challenging. It is basically a load and re-load situation trying different combinations of equipment and movement until you find the right combination. Let's not forget the horrible stealth missions where squares that a guaranteed safe (green) still cause you to be caught and you are back to re-loading 30 times to find the exact right combination and wasting hours in the process. Your planning or strategy does not matter. The game just feels like it is meant for you to play it a pre-programmed way and then read a bunch of poorly written dialogue and narration pushing you to a predetermined solution even though the game claims your choices matter (They do not). After 31 hours I don't even care to finish this piece of garbage. Add this company to a list of developers I will stay away from in the future.
