ColdSide: Retro Edition, developed and published by AdroVGames, is a stylistic reinterpretation of the original ColdSide that leans heavily into a nostalgic horror aesthetic without fundamentally changing its core design. It retains the same underlying structure—a first-person, narrative-driven exploration of a mysterious underground facility—but overlays it with a retro visual filter that mimics older horror titles through grain, distortion, and muted color palettes. This shift in presentation gives the experience a different tone, one that feels more raw and unsettling, even if the gameplay itself remains largely unchanged. The premise is familiar but effective: players step into the role of a researcher entering a sealed bunker where experiments involving unknown phenomena have gone wrong. From the beginning, the game establishes a sense of isolation and uncertainty, guiding players through dimly lit corridors and abandoned laboratories in search of answers. The story unfolds gradually through environmental details, scattered notes, and scripted sequences, encouraging players to piece together what happened rather than presenting everything directly. While the narrative does not break new ground in terms of originality, it maintains enough intrigue to carry the experience forward. Gameplay is intentionally minimal, following the structure of a walking simulator. Players spend most of their time exploring, interacting with objects, and solving occasional light puzzles that serve to pace the progression. There is no combat, and very little in the way of complex mechanics, which keeps the focus on atmosphere and storytelling. This approach works well for maintaining immersion, but it also means that the experience relies heavily on its environment and pacing to remain engaging. For players who prefer more active or system-driven gameplay, the lack of depth may become noticeable over time. Atmosphere is the game’s strongest element, and the retro presentation enhances it in subtle but meaningful ways. The visual noise, reduced clarity, and stylized lighting create a sense of unease that fits well with the setting. Shadows feel heavier, spaces feel more confined, and the environment as a whole takes on a more oppressive quality. Sound design plays a key role as well, with ambient noises, distant echoes, and sudden audio cues building tension throughout the experience. The horror is primarily psychological, relying on anticipation and discomfort rather than constant action, though there are moments designed to startle the player when least expected. Despite its strengths, the game does struggle in certain areas. The narrative, while intriguing in concept, can feel uneven in execution. Some elements are introduced without sufficient development, and the pacing occasionally falters, leading to moments where the story loses momentum. The linear structure, combined with limited interaction, can also make the gameplay feel repetitive, especially for players who are not fully drawn into the atmosphere. These issues do not undermine the experience entirely, but they do prevent it from reaching a higher level of impact. The retro aesthetic, while a defining feature, may not appeal to everyone. For some players, it adds character and reinforces the horror tone, making the game feel distinct from more polished modern titles. For others, it may feel like a stylistic layer that does not significantly enhance the underlying experience. Since the gameplay remains the same as the original version, the value of this edition depends largely on how much the player appreciates its visual direction. In terms of length, ColdSide: Retro Edition is relatively short, which works to its advantage. The limited runtime helps maintain tension and prevents the core mechanics from becoming overly repetitive. There are multiple endings and a few optional elements that encourage exploration, offering some incentive for replay, though the overall structure remains consistent across playthroughs. In the end, ColdSide: Retro Edition is a focused atmospheric horror experience that prioritizes mood and presentation over mechanical depth. It successfully creates a tense and unsettling environment, supported by its retro aesthetic and strong audio design, even if its narrative and gameplay elements are less refined. It is best suited for players who enjoy slow-paced, exploration-driven horror and are willing to embrace its minimalist approach. Rating: 7/10
Sehr empfehlenswert.
