This is an interesting game with a story that's parsed out well and a combat system that keeps you involved. The story is well delivered without a lot of disruption from random encounters and the upgrade system. It is a bit...dark...not in tone but in visuals. Everything is in black and gold. My college colors, so not much complaint, but it can be strange when looking where to go next. It's not entirely linear...but linear enough you can do a loop for loot without missing the main quest progression. The battle mechanics are fun but can be a challenge. I like it's more active than many RPGs and the random encounters are limited. It can be a slog and a half with other titles with constant less threatening encounters. The active involvement of dodging, parrying, and jumping in encounters with the limited battles is also a challenge in itself. How do you learn dodge timing when at most you've seen the same enemy once or twice? Especially when some timings and encounters can be punishing...like one random encounter near the beginning of the game where we had 40 successful dodges...and a number of not successful dodges. 40 in one basic encounter is a bit much. This was one where I faced the same enemy in under half a dozen encounters so a "basic" enemy. The combat encounters and dark visuals are the only things I can really criticize with the game. There's a lot of quality of life perks from a number of different titles and genres...dark souls is obvious and good. The only real thing I can say needs improvement is that when you need to do things in combat...randomly slo-mo'ing enemy attacks as developers make it "less punishing" is more of a hinderance than a benefit. Rhythm is important. It's why when you are team lifting things you go 3...2...1 not 3...2...uuuuuh, 1.
So good it makes me want to be French!
no words for it. deserves GOTY status, one of the best turn based games i have played in a while. good story, good visuals, good worldbuilding, good endgame as well.
thank you simon for making my life a living hell
What can I say about this game that cannot be demonstrated by the nearly 200 hours I sunk into it? Three full playthroughs did nothing to diminish the awe I felt at every twist and turn. Sandfall has created something truly magical with Expedition 33 and I cannot wait to see what they do next
In my opinion, calling this game a JRPG does not do it justice. I think this game is genre-defining. The art direction is beautiful. The music, AMAZING! and the combat massively improves the turn-based gameplay. I think my first experience with real-time mechanics in turn-based gameplay was the "Mario & Luigi" games, but this game's implementation of it is way more detailed and engaging. The circumstances that led this studio's formation still blow my mind, and I hope that it inspires other future developers.
One of the most audiovisually stunning games I have ever played in my life. The hybrid turn-based combat style is so much better than just normal turn-based since you can actually dodge and parry the opponent's attacks. That active defense was honestly the only thing stopping me from playing world-renowned games like Baldur's Gate 3, Persona 5, and Metaphor: ReFantazio. I just can't stand normal turn-based games (though I'm not 100% sure if those three have exactly that, since I've only watched a few videos to avoid spoilers). There is a huge variety of skills, weapons, and pictos you can equip to have completely different playstyles. It's so fun finding your own combos and just dominating your enemies. Graphics-wise, I highly recommend playing with native AA upscaling if your PC can handle it. It is a night and day difference between low and high settings. Hopefully they'll optimize the game for lower-end PCs in the future. Also, the soundtrack is insanely good. I'd highly recommend playing the game at least once. There are some crazy twists in the story that I won't spoil here! Took me about 53 hours for a single full playthrough where I literally went everywhere, beat every single boss, and unlocked every achievement. 10/10 masterclass.
A true Masterpiece. Actually the best solo game i have ever played... Graphics, the music, the scenario, the gameplay, everything is just... like a dream. More than a video game, it is a piece of art, a true experience. I am often disappointed by "hyped" games, but for this one the "hype" doesn't even give it true justice. I can only thank all those who participated into creating Clair Obscur for the experience they provided.
this game absolutely slaps and i cant reccommend it enough honestly. i really like the persona series and it takes that style of combat and really amplifies it with not only character-unique mechanics but just the general gameplay system is super clean. the plot is very fleshed out with real characters and nothing feels forced. it never really dips in quality and is amazing all the way through. enemies look and sound awesome, moves are satisfying and difficult. really really really good even if you dont want to 100% it. i will most definitely be doing another play through.
