Fun beat'em up with similar gameplay and scaling difficulty to Golden Axe made solely by two brothers in Unity. It starts out easy and gets very difficult by the second to last stage up through the final boss. The final stretch can be frustrating but that is how beat'em ups tend to be. You have to adapt and learn as you make your way through them. A few things I would love to see are a way to get 1-ups or more continues in single player mode and improvements to the music. I ended up turning on my own jams while playing. Once you manage to beat the game a harder mode also is included for an extra challenge that seems to scale up the enemy Ai much more quickly and make enemies even tougher by the end.
You play as a chipmunk with a sword, capable of calling down whales and fish by consuming mushrooms you get from beating up flies. If that sounds funny to you its worth a play. It can be frustrating at times because enemies often charge you from off screen and a few levels have fall hazards that cost your entire life (and you can't gain more 1ups or continues).
Cool Golden Axe clone with a funny twist. If you are a fan of retro 8 to 16-bit side scrolling beat em ups and hack n slash games then you will probably enjoy this. It's nothing revolutionary and the gameplay is a bit stiff with questionable hitboxes at times. Still if you want that retro feeling, this really lives up to that. Gave me flashbacks of my childhood and playing Golden Axe 1 & 2 in my room with friends. Pros: + Nice pixel graphics + Authentic retro feeling + Coop + Humor (Chipmunk Golden Axe) Cons: - Maybe slightly high in price (7,39€) for this sort of game that caters to a very specific type of nostalgic player. Not a big deal but 4-5€ might be more reasonable - No trading cards
When it comes to finding new games that pay homage to classic arcade machines, Steam users have a wealth of options. But finding such games that are as good as, or even close to being as good as their inspirations is depressingly difficult. This is especially true for games in the beat 'em up genre. For every rare gem like Charlie Murder or the underrated Raging Justice, there are at least a dozen dull, monotonous imitators. What developers most often miss when creating these games is that even though the core gameplay involves simply walking right and mashing the attack button, building variety around that basic loop is important. Chipmonk's developer understands this. And even though they've borrowed liberally from Sega's classic Golden Axe, this isn't a straight clone. It holds up just fine on its own and has clearly been made with care and talent. To illustrate my point: In most modern indie beat 'em up games, there are only a few truly distinct enemy types, at best. The stage backgrounds are simple "city streets" or some other generic setting, comprised of a single scrolling background plane with no interactivity whatsoever. The player takes a few steps to the right, a few of the baddies walk in from the left and right edge of the screen, they casually walk up to the player to strike with their basic attack, or the player hits them back with their lone attack combo. The enemies die, the player walks a few more steps to the right, repeat the whole process 50 times with a few end-stage bosses in between, and then the game ends. This may be a competently developed game, but it plays just as boring as it sounds. In Chipmonk, everything has more variety: There are around 8 or 9 unique enemies in total including bosses, with a nice array of attacks and even AI routines among them. The three available player characters all have a full set of abilities as well, including jump, dash, sliding, and back attacks. You can kick rocks at enemies, throw logs and furniture at them, and even pick them up and throw them at each other (they will happily return the favor if given the chance). And the enemies don't just walk in from the sides of the screen; they jump in over fences, brush, and river banks from the foreground and background, and come out of houses, bars, and secret cave walls. That's just a cosmetic perk, sure, but it makes a difference in that the various stages feel like actual places rather than just scrolling wallpaper. Plus the game's best asset: the lovely graphics. Big, detailed sprites. Multiple layers of parallax scrolling. Reflections, weather, and even some small physics effects like lanterns and chandeliers that sway back and forth when enemies hit the ground. It's a beautiful game. Not everything is great. The music is lousy. It doesn't fit the mood of the game, but even if it did, it just doesn't sound good at all. And the limp sound effects aren't much better. I'm sure this is due to having a limited budget; good audio isn't cheap, unfortunately. There is also no in-game story. No dialogue, cutscenes, nothing. This is a bizarre omission to me. There is so much creativity in the characters and setting that I can't believe they couldn't come up with a halfway decent backstory to explain it all. Finally, even though there is a greater enemy variety here than in 90% of brawlers on Steam, it still starts to feel repetitive once you get past the halfway point. This is made more apparent because the basic mob enemies just aren't that threatening. Even though they all have unique attacks, most of them are defeated so easily that they never get a chance to use them. The only enemy attacks that are consistently dangerous are their charge attacks. That is the one factor that I think the developer should focus on improving if they have the chance - add a couple more enemies, and make them all a little more agressive with their basic attacks and a little less aggressive with their charge attacks. Regardless, this is a great game as it is, especially for the price (It only costs $9 as of this writing but feels closer to a $15 game). Chipmonk isn't as good as its inspiration, but it's pretty close. General beat 'em up fans should definitely get it, or if you are a particular fan of Golden Axe and want a similar experience in a distinctly different setting.
A Golden Axe homage with Chimpunks? Sign me up! It's a bit repetitive--but then so is the source material.
Very solid Golden Axe like beat em up.
If Golden Axe had roles reversed, really cool concept.
