A good game marred by lack of balance mechanics. Some of the abilities are 'easy mode' such as chain zap or orbiting projectiles, some are impossible without certain upgrades (blast wave needs one or two more projectiles or you get swamped), and the upgrades are completely random, which means winning is simply pulling a slot machine lever and hoping you get the necessary upgrade. It's bad game design to use randomness to create difficulty spikes without counterplay. It's also unclear if the xp boost upgrades scale hard enough to offset other options you might pick instead, especially on shorter game modes, because it isn't readily shown how the xp requirements scale per level. You may still enjoy the game if you only play the simpler abilities: bullet arc, chain zap, orbiting projectiles. Or, don't play on hard mode.

[h1] Cellfish [/h1] [h2] A chill game that'll make you rip your hair out [/h2] This game can be a nice and chill game on lower difficulties, but still requires a bit of concentration to complete. Once you get a hang of an ability and get the right upgrades, then you'll dominate your enemies. But when you hit the higher difficulties, like Double Trouble [spoiler] (BRTL you [strike] insane [/strike] mad genius...)[/spoiler], you'll wonder why you've developed a bald spot. The game mechanics can be a bit tricky at first, since there's no tutorial or guides. It adds to the fun as you'll have to experiment with different ways of playing the game. Find out which combos of upgrades that'll suit your style and the ability. And hope that you'll be blessed by the RNG God. It's recommended to play the game with a controller, but so far I've only played it with a keyboard. Quite Fun and challenging, and reasonably playable on pc. However it would be great to have customise-able controls. :) Also maybe a brief guide on the goal/how to win would be good. Took a few attempts to figure out some more obscure mechanics.

Well-executed top-down shooter with Vampire Survivors-like gameplay loop. (++) Movement is fun. (+) Not so common setting of an organic cell fighting for survival and striving for evolution. (+) You can customize your character, including the type of 'weapon' you'll use and all the 'weapon' types are fundamentally varying your playstyle. (+) Great on Steam deck. (-) Wish there was more of everything. Story, enemies, levels, strategies, more to explore and uncover.. rather than just difficulties.

For the price, it's an acceptable purchase. I wouldn't pay more than 5 bucks for it. The customization options are cute but the actual mechanical unlocks are very limited and don't really alter the basic playstyle of your cell. Level ups just increase numbers, with occasional 'evolutions' that improve your weapon but again don't particularly expand your options beyond doing what you were doing before a little better.

Unfair game, if you ever encounter that stupid large jellyfish, just end the run, you'll die faster.
