Catacombs 1: Demon War has you taking control of a hero ready to save his hometown. Right from the start you're met with some pretty decent voice acting, especially for a small independent title like this. Graphically the game looks nice enough and gives me a sort of Ultima vibe. While the overall story of saving a hometown isn't the most original, it's the details that make it stand out and adds a bit more of a unique twist to it. As with any RPG, combat is important. The combat in Catacombs is standard turn-based combat so you can take your time in deciding what to do next. Strike them with some bizarre weapon, destroy them with magic, maybe you need to heal yourself - whatever it is, you're covered. You have a number of stats that you can train up as you level and use that to help strengthen your hero. Items also come with durability, so if that's not your thing then this may not be for you. I died at one point as my armor shattered mid-fight. Never fun. I only have two real complaints about the game. Accessing menus is a bit awkward as it seems like you need to click a lot more than necessary to reach things. You kind of get used to it but it's still a little off-putting at first. I'm also not a fan of how to engage enemies. Like most RPGs that have visible enemies to attack, you need to run into them. But in Catacombs if you run into them from above then you're not going to engage them. You need to encounter them from the side or bottom which can be slightly annoying. Overall I'd give this game a recommend. I did receive my copy for free so I can't truly comment on the price. But it seems as if they lowered it after various comments and I feel the current $3 or so is pretty fair for what you're getting. The game has it's quirks, but it's fun and it isn't your standard RPG Maker stuff you see so often these days, so that just boosts it's presence in my eyes. In action: https://youtu.be/ZT9o1N_cV_0

Retro-graphics, Dungeon crawly goodness, loots, lutes and bards. Don't forget to save your game. Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTMDr98ilhY&lc=z13eibdiko20vxdvb22zi1rrvl25j3uro04
Just finished the game. It is short as is stated and contains around 15 screens in total. I thought the story was totally ok and the writing was surprisingly good. There is a lot of variety in monster types and combats are quite nicely executed. The game - while not hard when I discovered I can flee from combats - was hardest in the beginning and I ended tha game at level 5. The only thing which got more frustrating was that the further you got the further you had to retrace your steps back to town to heal and buy spells. But that was somewhat mitigated by the fact that you could pick up town portal scrolls and also carry a lot of healing potions but most importantly escape combats with good success. The game is extremely linear though but the levelling is fun which gives you 4 stat points to spend. Items is interesting and looting is fun. Overall well worth the money and definetely on sale. It is said chapter 2 will be released early 2018 (still waiting) and you can then transfer the save.
A quick to finish partial game. Mechanics were different from what I was used to, but once I got used to them, everything flowed fairly smoothly. Not a lot of replay value. No choices, really, except whether or not to add a 2nd party member and divide your experience points. I found I was running low on mana potions and the market didn't resupply them. As the drops and encounters will be different each playthrough, that would be a reason to retry it. The best part I found was the comparison between new equipment and equippep items was automatic, making those decisions easier. I said partial because apparantly there will be two more installments to this item; hopefully as DLCs where you continue the story, rather than start all over from base level. At $5 USD (4.99) its not a bad buy.
I paid 90 cents for this gem. Neat little RPG lots of randomized weapons and drops. I hope that the next two might propose a little less random for drops and a harder difficulty curve. I love getting strong gear but when a rat drops me something that gives me 16 power..... that a little overkill. I do recommend this game. Has geat potential. Sort of reminded me of Castle of the Winds
Once again Simprose has delivered on another RPG game. Only this time there is better artwork as well as introducing voice acting for the storyline narrative. Although as of today I've yet to complete the game. I've seen enough to recommend this for hardcore JRPG players who fancy a quick fix as opposed to a long slog. The story is pretty basic and runs along quite nicely The randomness of the drops on arms and armour isn't everyone's cup of tea, but if you don't mind getting thumped every so often then it works well enough. Although made with the RPG Maker engine, there is no sign of any custom tilesets, which for me shows that the dev has done some work on the game rather than just churning out an unimaginative clone. All in all, a good effort.
With the vast selection of indie RPGs pouring into the market every month, it is easier than ever to give a pass to their majority. However, in spite of some balance issues and a few bugs, games like Catacombs: Demon War remind me that there is still passion and heart even in the zygote of our industry. Pros - Varied pattern of random and fixed encounters - Highly-polished battle screen with good contrast and proper feedback - Unique party system where full-party and solo playthroughs are both viable Cons - Game is playable but not sufficiently balanced - Crashes experienced a few time Neutral - Loot is very, very random - Quality of writing is at times excellent and at other times quite bad I genuinely enjoyed my time with Catacombs: Demon War and would recommend it to anyone seeking a short, complete RPG experience with some cool hybrid systems.
Catacombs is an interesting game with a lot of neat elements and a tense battle system. I'm not gonna beat around the bush here. These are the Pros and Cons Pros: -Very Strategic RPG battle system that has a lot of quirks. You must always pay attention to your HP and MP to survive every fight. -Characters, a bunch of side people who have cool textures. -Simplistic and Direct, no overarching story, nothing crazy, throws you right into the game, It's a lot of fun and stays away from being too grindy. -Cool settings and level design -Neat little side quests and in-game achievements for extra XP -Armor and Weapon break mechanic Cons: -Grid system hitboxes are a little off for some enemies -No auto-battle button -No Steam Achievements -Low sound effect variety and quality -Glitch where if your female companion uses magic, she uses the same sound effect as the guy using magic -You can walk into NPCs instead of clicking near them -Low caliber music (pretty basic and repetitive) -Empty World Syndrome. Tons of cabinets and drawers but none of them give items or even say they are empty when the models clearly show stuff on them. I think this game is more impressive with the combat over everything else. The world is kinda weird and feels slightly off as you are playing. I only played for about an hour but I will continue to play and I will update this review accordingly the more I play. Overall 5/10. Average, but could be a lot better.
