FRUSTRATING AT TIMES BUT IT WAS WORTH IT
Poor little kitty has been wandering around the mountains for days, and the snowstorm is relentless. Just when he collapses, along comes a kind stranger who gives him food, shelter...and love! His new master names him Yang, and their friendship knows no boundaries. Several months later, a Demon steals the soul of Yang's beloved master, so Yang sets out on a dangerous mission to the world of ghosts and demons to find and return his master's soul. This is a point-and-click adventure that is very simple to navigate. Yang is equipped with a bag to hold items and a couple of special abilities that you will equip him with during his travels. Inventory items can easily be combined by dragging one item to the other.
CAT VISION:
Ghosts and Demons can only be seen while using "Cat Vision," so if you get stuck, chances are that you'll need to click the icon to equip this special ability to progress.
HUMAN CAT SPIRIT:
This ability allows Yang to turn into basically a human cat. This ability was only used a few times and felt a bit unnecessary, in my opinion. There were only a few mini-games, such as guiding a Koi upstream while avoiding obstacles or selecting Zodiac signs according to the clues seen previously. They weren't difficult, although the final puzzle was really frustrating. I replayed the third round several times before I realized I had to use my cat vision because the demon was tricking me. This was a memory-type of game where you had to choose all animals in the first round, all flowers in the second round, and all demons in the fourth round. It wouldn't have been an issue if I didn't have to replay the first two rounds every time I "lost" to the Demon in the third round. It's a short game that can be completed in a few hours. It does get a bit complicated knowing when to switch your special abilities, and it has an achievement that can't be earned if you pick up feathers other than the requested Phoenix feather. The game is still worthwhile, especially if you enjoy a heartwarming story or just love cats. Cat and Ghostly Road is a good point & click game with a beautiful story, some nice graphics and a relaxing ambiant. I recommend it!!! 💗🐈💗
While this game is pretty short, it's at the same price as the other games from that dev so I encourage you to buy it on sale or you will probably be disappointed as you can easily finish it under 2 hours. There is an achievement that can be difficult to get, so here is a tip if you don't want to have to play twice :
don't pick random feathers
.
Visually this game is pleasant but it is not intuitive to play. UX is not good, you can randomly click on something and it will just work and you will have no idea why. At one point early in the game I was softlocked because the necessary item did not spawn. I've almost refunded at that point, but it was early, so I replayed from the start, it did spawn next time and then the bug did not repeat. But the main thing... you might think this game is Japanese and will have proper Japanese folklore, but it just will feel off and when you get to the credits you'll know why: the developers are not Japanese. So basically it's a cultural appropriation of a generic idea about Asia by a Western person. That's why it feels so shallow. And a cute white cat does not save it.
Cat and Ghostly Road is a hauntingly gentle point-and-click adventure that proves a game doesn’t need grand spectacle or elaborate systems to leave a lasting emotional mark. Developed and published by BOV, it tells the story of a small white cat whose peaceful life with a kind painter is shattered when a malicious spirit steals the painter’s soul. Instead of becoming a horror tale, the game transforms into a quiet, mythic rescue journey—one carried not by dialogue or dramatic cutscenes, but by visual storytelling, folkloric atmosphere, and the unwavering loyalty of a silent feline protagonist. The narrative is simple and linear, yet it manages to feel timeless, like a bedtime story passed down across generations. What immediately sets the game apart is its art direction. Every scene looks like a delicate painting—lush forests, mist-covered shrines, glowing spirit realms, and mysterious mountains unravel in stunning hand-drawn compositions. The environments feel handcrafted, not procedurally generated or hastily textured. Color is used with intention: calm, earthly greens and browns give way to ethereal blues, deep reds, and spectral whites as the cat crosses the boundary between the living world and the supernatural. Character and creature designs borrow from East Asian mythology, but instead of leaning into fear or grotesquery, they radiate quiet beauty—even when they’re unsettling. The soundtrack reinforces the dreamy tone, weaving ambient traditional instruments, soft chimes, and atmospheric echoes into a score that lets players sink into the world without distraction. Gameplay remains rooted in classic adventure design. Players explore environments, collect and combine items, solve environmental puzzles, and speak to spirits, animals, and humans willing to help—or hinder—the journey. The pacing is slow and contemplative, encouraging observation rather than speed. One of the game’s signature tools is the cat’s ability to see into the spirit world—a mechanic that reveals hidden objects, paths, or entities. It’s a clever thematic bridge between reality and myth, though most puzzles lean toward simplicity and intuition rather than complexity or lateral thinking. The design philosophy is clear: the game wants players to experience the story and absorb the scenery, not struggle with obtuse logic or miss progress-critical items. At its best, the gameplay blends seamlessly with mood—an abandoned lantern becomes a guide, a spirit disguised as a helpful animal leads the way, a discarded human object becomes meaningful through context. But the accessibility comes with drawbacks. Some puzzles feel underdeveloped, and seasoned adventure-game fans may finish the entire experience without ever feeling challenged. Hidden objects can blend into the environment too well, occasionally leading to pixel-hunting rather than clever problem solving. Interactions sometimes require precise clicks or repeated attempts, revealing small control or interface limitations. None of these issues ruin the experience, but they remind the player that the game prioritizes atmosphere over mechanical refinement. The game’s length—typically two to four hours—also influences how it should be approached. Cat and Ghostly Road is not a sprawling epic, but a compact emotional vignette. It’s meant to be experienced in a single evening, like reading a short illustrated folklore book or watching an art-house animated film. The story resolves cleanly, without branching endings or extended postgame content, which makes replay value limited unless one returns to admire the artwork or revisit favorite moments. However, the brevity feels purposeful rather than lacking. Stretching the adventure would likely dull its emotional precision and artistic pacing. Where the game truly shines is in its emotional sincerity. Without spoken lines, expressive cutscenes, or dramatic moral dilemmas, it still conveys devotion, longing, fear, humor, and gentle wonder. The relationship between the cat and the painter—shown through small gestures rather than exposition—anchors everything. The spirits encountered along the journey aren’t stock villains or allies; many feel like reflections of loneliness, regret, or forgotten histories. The result is a world that feels spiritually inhabited, not simply populated with quest givers. Cat and Ghostly Road ultimately succeeds because it embraces what it is: a quiet, visually striking, folklore-infused adventure led by a determined little cat. It doesn’t attempt to overwhelm or impress through complexity—it invites players to slow down, observe, and feel. Those seeking long campaigns, branching moral choices, or intricate puzzle systems may find it too light, but for players drawn to narrative texture, beautiful art, and emotionally resonant simplicity, it offers a memorable, soulful experience. It’s the kind of game that ends softly, but lingers—like a dream you remember not for what happened, but for how it made you feel. Rating: 8/10
That was a nice little Game <3 it's like a beautiful fairy tale!
I played this game because the devs also made Detective from the Crypt, which I also really enjoyed. The art was equally gorgeous, the puzzles seemed a little more forgiving (but that might be me misremembering how difficult the originals were; I confuse DftC with Goetia sometimes because they're so similar and I love them both), and the cheevos gave adequate dopamine. Also badges. 10/10, will buy more games from this dev. ^_^
