So I have played this game for about 20 years spread over 30 year period, so I think that entitles me to a review. So here it is. Carrionfields is an addictive game and is not healthy in anyway. While you may find a way to play it in moderation, unfortunately the rest of the player base cannot. For some people it’s more important than their life. As such the community is frequently toxic. Some Vandetta’s have lasted for a decade. Some of the game admin (immortals) are included in this toxicity and occasionally you find yourself at their mercy for no good reason. It’s not uncommon to build a character over 300 hours only to have an immortal snuff it out over a false allegation. Many of the rewards in the game are linked to in-character roleplaying with the immortals who run religions. Unfortunately, they tend to ignore you, even though you log in multiple times a day for months. So expect to be bored endlessly waiting for a response. The game has tried other methods over the years to attract new players, but ultimately, they fail. This is because it’s a very complicated game and the veterans have played 50 -100 characters with average of 200 hours on each. So expect to be ruthlessly killed over and over with no chance to ever be competitive. If you do push out to the point you have capability to kill people, you will find 3/4 of the player base will just quit out to avoid death. Many claim to be great roleplayers, and often can tell a tale (using chat gpt), but it's not good roleplay to type quit when your base is being attacked. While discord is very active and you can get advice about the game there, it’s very toxic. CF addicts are just as addicted to the discord chat as the game itself. Be mindful of the positive reviews, you may as well be asking a crack addict to review cocaine. Almost a year since last played and my life is much better. Regards, Mackle/Arolin

"pick your name" >enters name "is this an original name?" >i doubt it "would this name be in a dictionary?" >are any names in the dictionary?? "are you sure this is the name you want?" >i wouldve picked a different name if i wanted a different name "roleplaying is mandatory. you will be immediately banned if your name does not fit the world" >what "pvp is always on also" >that sucks but fine, whatever "read this wall of text before you start playing" >ill do it after you let me pick a name "you will be banned if you dont read it now" >10mins of reading pass "here's 3 more walls of text to read" >still havent made a character like come on man. i love text-based games but holy this is nothing but slog
Game is fun from a mechanical aspect, runs like an old edition of DnD. You have some awesome spells and the skills, and world are fun to explore. There are also hints of LoTR and Drizzt. Your character is equipped with an entire stat block and it really does feel like playing in a campaign. I'd recommend the game if you are into heavy RP with a close knit community that guides the games rules and mechanics instead of set pre-determined developer laws, and Perm Character death (This is likely to happen on your first character, even subsidiary characters) once your Con Reaches 3 you go kaput. [What to watch out for:] You join the wrong thing and change your alignment as a new player? Lose all your powers. Want them back? RP and hope another player who has reached immortal status deems you worthy of your powers. or Delete and remake a character. The game has tons of customization but you aren't allowed to use it, a lot of the community seems against any form of customization to help you travel faster, cast spells, or do things as little as eat food. Acquiring Carpel tunnel is the preferred method of play. Very little is given to you in the way of information up front both about Game mechanics, and Rules it guides you through a little of everything but it's a summary mostly. To find info you are to use the Help command which pulls up a vast library of topics hidden here are the answers you seek. Common responses when asking for help in discord are "it's always been there you just have to look", "Don't do it that way we don't do it that way here" ,"You could do it that way but I'd do it this way" , and "No the game provides you that but that's botting to us" , etc. Admins of the game are Immortals, who are very hard to get a hold of, I ended up in "The realm of the dead" a bad place for bad people who do bad things and waited a while before just logging. I'm still unsure why I was there as you are supposed to "Pray" in game to an immortal who if they are online may answer you if they deem it worthy of there time they are immortals after all and don't need to cater to the common people all the time. (The game states this, immortals aren't admins they are literal immortals) I don't believe tickets are really a thing the discord guides you to in-game "Tickets" (Praying) and praying usually ends up with dead silence. I assume you have to get on at very specific times and know another immortals play schedule to acquire information. I definitely enjoyed the game while I played, I don't recommend it though based on lack of community guidance and lack of help in general, you are just assumed to know or have looked it up in the Help section which sometimes requires very specific terms. ----- As a side note I do suspect I may be in the realm of the dead because of drop trading to a remade character, I would like to point out I saw nowhere in the rules on discord or the game itself that this was against ToS. But wanna be up front since i'm writting a review, take it as you will :-) Edit: The ban was due to drop trading, was told to look at the command Help Rules or Help Multichara. if you play just be aware of this as it isn't stated in the tutorials. You are told about the Help command, I just assumed they would have told me their rules somewhere....apparent.
Currently I am still quite new to the game, only having played for 19 hours, and will update this review as I am able to get further into the game. I expected a rigid community of gatekeeping veterans, the game being 30 years old with enforced RP and strict lore. Instead, I found a community of dedicated players eager to invite new people of any generation into their space. This is definitely a game that requires a huge time investment and a commitment to roleplay and character development, but the world feels alive and vivid, and there's so much to do and different ways to play. I imagine every new character will be a vastly different experience. If you love cool magic, old-school fantasy, an adherence to lore, and have the patience and time to dedicate to a video game with a constantly evolving world, come join me and give it a try! The classes are super cool.
Carrion Fields is a highly interactive in depth game that allows you to use your own creative energy, competitiveness, and problem solving to their greatest capacity. If you're into player versus player mode games you will find an insanely complex amount of character combos, highly sought unique equipment and items, and custom edge lists for every race and class. If you're into roleplay Carrion Fields is 100% roleplay enforced, from the time you create your character to the time it ends (via age after hundreds if not thousands of hours of gameplay, violence from running out of constitution at 3 deaths per point, or simply deleting to try something new) CF is like writing your own fantasy novel for a character that you create via interaction with other players constantly. CF has both religions and cabals as an excellent venue for these opportunities. All that being said, Carrion Fields has a steep learning curve. If you are not familiar with text based games think of them as Dungeons and Dragons, but on the computer via scrolling text with hundreds of other people at the same time and no having to wait for your turn. As a new player you will die a LOT, to many different things while you learn to navigate the game. Everyone goes through this as they learn to play and there are a lot of veteran players excited to help you learn, whether it's in character or on discord. Carrion Fields has a very elaborate helpfile system as well, any time you are stuck on something just type 'help (something)' and it's likely there's a file to show you how to use that function of the game. Players on this game are competitive and passionate about their time spent here. Just from reading some of the reviews you can tell even those players who couldn't follow game rules and were denied access for cheating are still engaged enough to leave negative reviews after 20+ years of their lives spent playing this game they profess to hating. I encourage you to try it for yourself! MUDs are not for everyone, but for the people who love to roleplay, are competitive, and get excited about learning new things like solving quests or area exploration....Carrion Fields is a great opportunity for fun.
You need a massive amount of time to learn how to even navigate the menus of this game, all for a relatively simple, albeit unique rpg. Cannot recommend unless you have a friend to guide you through the days/weeks it takes to learn.
Carrion Fields has captured my imagination like nothing else. As an experienced MUDer on a similar Diku/ROM platform, the learning curve was not quite as steep. I came in with an understanding about ticks, commands, help files, attacking, fleeing, wimpy, score, affects, spells, and the rest of the commands that bring your character to life. A few things about Carrion Fields had me apprehensive to join at first. I read help files, joined Discord, and accumulated information about that which gave me concern. Primarily, CON death, perma-death, auto-delete, and enforced role play. My knee jerk reaction was, "This is absurd. I've dumped hundreds of hours into multiple characters on another MUD. I can still log in on those characters and the nostalgia is intoxicating." I struggled to grasp the benefit of such a rule set where real life time and energy would evaporate if the proper care was not taken. Here is where I've landed after spending almost 100 hours in game. CON death requires you to be more responsible with your actions, and words for that matter. I'm less likely to throw caution to the wind and instead I plan and execute with extreme caution. Consequences are real and as an avid Hardcore player in games like Diablo, Path of Exile, and WoW Hardcore, this CON death system emulates those environments to a lesser degree. You don't have to start over after a single death, rather you get more like 60 deaths, or so I believe, with scaled consequences along the way. RP is not something that comes naturally for me. I'm learning that practice makes perfect though, as is the case with most things in life. The first dozen or so hours, you can get by learning the mud and not really doing much in the way of RP, sans setting up a character Description, which describes what someone sees when they look at you. Once you find a race/class combo that speaks to you, creating a roleplay(role) story is next in line. What fun that has turned out to be. Also, finding your speech pattern helps to bring your character to life. If you're like me, and struggle, feeling like you only know how to convey your characters thoughts with an Earthly dialect, then roll a Human, Half-Elf, etc. Just drop the modern references we find in today's speech and you'll fit right in. If you really like the idea of a non-standard race, explore what sounds, words, and phrases such a race might use. Practice with NPCs, others you find in game, and evolve your character's personality. RP was a fear of mine initially but I'm finding as is with most fears, they are easily overcome. TLDR: Don't let the things that might scare you away, keep you away. A MUD, and in this case Carrion Fields, offers a more rewarding experience than any other type of game I've played. From table top DnD, to Online MMORPGs, to ARPGs. Nothing comes close to the experience of exploring, learning, and eventually conquering a fully developed and constantly changing world. Highly recommend Carrion Fields to experienced MUDers and newbies alike. Both with have to learn much but it becomes a labor of love. There is so much more to say, but I'll leave it at this for now.
I will admit that I love text based RPGs and Interactive novels, but I just can never seem to get into MuDs. I know the tech is from the 90's, but it would be nice if these types of games were made with more modern U.I. and accessibility elements. In terms of why the negative review? Honestly, because food systems that have you starving to death in 30 min irritate me. Quite frankly, I also have the same issue with survival games due to the lack of realism. Not to mention, what does a food system add to games? Does it promote RP? No. Is it a way to reduce the players spending ability? No. Does it promote realism? Not with that time frame. So at the end of the day I just think such systems are a waste of time. When playing a RPG, the last thing I want are redundant time wasting mechanics. Though of course that is just my two cents on the matter.
I have low steam hours, high RL hours. Glad to see CF here. If you MUD already - it’s a good one. If you don’t, but you’re up for trying text based gaming, think d&d, nwn, baldurs gate, with just a little bit of counterstrike in a text environment. Oddly compelling! I take regular breaks but always come back.
Worst moderators of any game 'Ive ever experienced and the dumbest rules all the way at the start. Don't waste your time with this game. The neck-beards will do everything they can to nitpick everything and remove all fun. This is THEIR little playground, not yours. All i got in trouble for was using an uncommon Latin name and they said it cant reference ANYTHING or mean ANYTHING related to the real world. That's as far as I got before the neck-beards came. I'm not saying this game isn't fun, I'm saying these devs or anyone a part of this don't deserve your time, attention, or downloads. Don't give them anything they want because they certainly don't want you.
