Follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
Captain Backwater: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sailors, avast ye (pay attention)! See this old scroll in my hand . . . can someone tell me why sailor Sean is looking at my hook? Oh, shiver me timbers - this scroll is the map of the archipelago right in front of us! One hundred islands in total and all have a cross on them! That’s right me hearties, each hold exceptional booty for the taking. Arrgh, now seriously . . . does anyone on board have half a brain? “Yo Ho Ho” the entire crew screamed! “Oh boy, it’s going to be a long treasure hunt”, thought Captain Backwater. Captain Backwater is a casual puzzle game where you have to loot one hundred Islands - what a pirate’s dream! Well, this is a very interesting puzzle game, to say the least. The game set out as a square with ten by ten tiles. Your goal is to match two, three or even four items on the square by colliding them into each other to clear the level with a minimum of moves. You have one hundred stages to clear and there are plenty of variations. First, in each level some of the tiles will be occupied by a rock, which in most levels is pretty handy but in others can be a pain, especially if the rocks divide two areas in that level. The rapier icon will help you to destroy one of these rocks. The trick is to know which rock to destroy so you can clear the level. Other levels don’t have items of the same colour and you‘ll probably ask yourself, how am I going to do this? The answer is easy, look for which tile has a splash on it and make sure to send your object to it; it will then change colour to match the other item. The other way is to paint them using a paint brush, if it is available to you. On some occasions, neither of them will be available. However, bombs and dynamite will probably be placed in some tiles, which can be very helpful in those instances. Some other variants, like the spikes, can make a level tricky and as soon as one of your objects hovers over the tile where the spikes are located, that specific tile will be blocked. If you see a parrot on the sign where your score is displayed, well you’re going to have fun . . . each time one object touches another (not the one it should collide with), its colour will change. As for goblets, make them collide and a monkey will appear, indicating time for you to catch bananas, giving you additional points at the end of the stage. There are plenty of other variations which I’ll let you discover for yourself. You can also collect coins. These are hidden on squares and can be collected if one item hovers over it, but be quick to use your mouse to pick them up, just like the bananas. In regards to the gameplay, it is very simple. Select an item and with your mouse select the direction you want it to go. Graphically, Captain Backwater is colourful and the soundtrack is cool! As I mentioned above, I really like the variations. It’s a great game to introduce to children who have never played puzzle games. The game runs well but currently crashes when you switch it to full screen. Positives: ~~~~~~~ - Colourful graphics - 100 levels to clear - Plenty of variations - Easy to play and great to introduce to children Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - Game crashes when switching to full screen - No achievements or trading cards Captain Backwater is an easy, fun and well-designed puzzle game with plenty of variations. A great game to introduce to children. 7/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! november 2022 edit: the game's free now but still not recommendable, of course, and I left in the info on its price history, just in case. captain backwater is a sliding game with a pirate theme and a matching element. the goal isn't to reach the exit but to bump two (sometimes more) of the same items together. not for upgrade purposes like in 2048-likes, but to make them disappear. notes is an example that comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others. 100 levels unlocked one by one, and besides the sliding action there are a bunch of mechanics. arrows, dynamite and bombs to clear treasure faster, various means of changing treasure color, spikes activated after moving over them (they just block, don't cause game over), the occasional rapier to destroy any tile, etc. teleporters aren't great, their animation is slow and part of the puzzle is unfortunately figuring out which leads where. coins and bananas serve as very annoying collectibles. coins are invisible and appear out of nowhere as the items sashay around (if you even use the tiles hiding them) and you have to mouseover each quickly before they disappear. bananas are thrown all over the screen by a monkey, appearing after matching two goblets, same collection method. I don't mind optional challenges and annoyances, but collectibles unlock levels 81-100 one by one, so they're kinda mandatory. nothing wrong with a bonus level pack put behind collectibles either, but then make them puzzly, not some arcade ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. they can't be farmed by replaying the same levels, of course, but level select doesn't show where you have some left either. undo is available but it counts as a move. good enough to simply solve levels, useless if you go for high scores, which are only local and meaningless anyway, no par for the levels, so why bother. no on-screen timer but completion time is shown on the level complete screen, along with all sorts of other stats and your score. found and missed coins and bananas would be somewhat useful info but the counter is usually incorrect, possibly messed up by undo, so even though I kept completing levels and grabbing coins, my counter often didn't go up, so I couldn't unlock more bonus levels. controls are mouse-only, no hotkeys besides esc bringing up the pause menu. since you're not controlling a single entity, it's fine, but undo and reset should still have their keys. non-widescreen graphics are the usual casual-colorful kind, stretched to fill the screen on widescreen monitors, which I'm sure were available back in 2017 as well. music is surprisingly good if very repetitive, but the same annoying soundbites all over the place are incredibly grating. there are separate volume settings but not for speech, so I tried replacing audio files in the install folder, but then the game didn't start. english and german languages, full screen toggle for a small non-resizable window, in-game cursor and achievements and a 'high-quality visuals' toggle that removes some unnecessary effects, so it's not too bad. not being able to go back to the map from a level is less than ideal. quitting shows the high score list first, gotta close that, then click play to be able to choose another level. core gameplay would be fine, shame about the bugs, annoying speech and collectibles. there have also been pricing shenanigans over the years. it was $10 on release back in 2017 both on steam and itch, then went down to $1 permanently on both platforms only a year later, followed by an increase to $6 in late 2021, but only on steam, it's still $1 on itch and both are drm-free. very much a ♥♥♥♥ move. what's more, they essentially re-released the same game 5 years later under a different company and title (pirate's gold), but without mentioning this game or the differences and similarities (meaning the same exact levels) anywhere on the store page. even more ridiculously, 5 years weren't enough to add a speech slider, so you don't even get a better experience for double the current price of this, just some slightly different graphics. they're not denying the connection, even offering owners of backwater a free key for pirate's gold on discord, but then why not release it as backwater remastered or a simple patch? even if it's a trademark or similar issue, they should be able to mention it on the store page, like every half-assed first-person puzzler does with the witness and portal.
Pretty fun little puzzle game so far, I'm about a quarter of the way through. Only drawback I see is there are no targets for the number of moves so you don't really know how well you did on each level. You can replay to beat your own score but it would be nice to have some indication of the minimum number of moves required to complete each level. I recommend but I got this in a bundle for a buck and a half. Doubt I'd recommend it at the 8.99 price.
Czarny dym spowił nas, przyszedł śmierci czas, Krzyk i lament mych kamratów, przerywany ogniem katów. Ciepła krew poleje się strugami, Wygra ten, kto utrzyma ship. W huku dział ktoś przykryje się falami, Jak da Bóg, ocalimy bryg. Pocisk nasz trafił w maszt, usłyszałem trzask, To sterburtę rozwaliła jedna z naszych salw.
nice puzzle game, Pirate themed. Voice over reminds me Tropico 2 (Pirates edition), puzzles have variety with some unexpected twist for bananas part. Overall it's a good impression, I would recommend this game even for a full price. Despite some small issues game looks very solid and fun. Developer still works on fixes for some Linux issues (I had to play it under wine for now, because Linux port has no sound and crashes while switching to full screen, it affects only Linux version of the game so if you're Windows user - don't worry about that - game works great on Windows or under wine).
Good game. Would be nice to have an online leaderboard to compare levels and other stuff :) Arghhh It is charitable aye!! Dun furget to feed and give grog to banana munky!
