Cannibal Chickens is a frontrunner for one of the absolute worst games on Steam, and with a catalogue of over 50,000 games, of which I've played and reviewed over 9,000 (so I'm pretty sure I've seen most of the worst), this is a truly incredible achievement. This was supposed to be a console-esque ripoff of Super Smash Bros, a 2D arena platform brawler, except with badly drawn MS-paint chickens. However, the game basically doesn't work... I hit every single key on my keyboard several times trying to navigate the menu and I couldn't trigger any activation of the game, but the menu itself is a nightmare anyway, and the screenshots, which I'm forced to judge the game by, don't do it any favours. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The artwork here is terrible, it's some of the most amateurish MS-Paint style drawings I've ever hurt my eyes on. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can do graphics properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result of these decisions. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game all-time peak player count was only ONE player. That's right, only one person ever played this at a time. When I played this for the purposes of reviewing it, I equalled the peak player count for the game. OUCH. The only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Cannibal Chickens has the completely unrealistic cash grab price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.

How does the game start?
Cannibal Chickens, developed and published by DIG Games, is a quirky indie party game built around chaotic multiplayer competition and a deliberately absurd premise. The game takes place on the strange island of So-fee, where a group of immortal chickens engage in a bizarre survival contest that involves swallowing each other whole. While the concept might sound dark at first glance, the presentation is entirely comedic and cartoonish, turning the idea into slapstick-style humor rather than anything unsettling. The result is a fast-paced multiplayer experience designed primarily for casual sessions with friends rather than long single-player adventures. The gameplay revolves around a simple but chaotic objective: eat the other chickens before they eat you. Players control colorful chickens in small arenas filled with platforms and obstacles, moving quickly around the map in pursuit of opponents. When a player successfully catches another chicken, they swallow them in a single gulp. The defeated player then respawns moments later at a nest somewhere on the map, ready to jump back into the action. This instant respawn system keeps the pace of matches extremely fast, ensuring that no one remains out of the game for long. Because players constantly return after being eaten, matches become a continuous cycle of chasing, escaping, and ambushing. One moment you may be hunting another chicken, and the next you might find yourself being pursued by several opponents at once. This unpredictability is where much of the game’s humor and excitement come from. The frantic back-and-forth between predator and prey creates a lively competitive atmosphere where fortunes can change within seconds. The controls are intentionally designed to be easy to understand. Movement and jumping form the basis of gameplay, allowing players to run across platforms and navigate the arenas quickly. This simplicity ensures that even players who are unfamiliar with video games can quickly grasp the mechanics and join a match without needing lengthy tutorials. The focus remains entirely on positioning, timing, and reading the movements of other players rather than mastering complicated control schemes. The arenas themselves are compact but designed to encourage constant movement and interaction. Platforms, edges, and narrow spaces create opportunities for ambushes and escapes. Players must carefully watch their surroundings, as approaching the wrong corner or landing in the wrong spot can quickly lead to becoming someone else’s next meal. The limited size of the maps ensures that players are never far from the action, which helps maintain the frantic energy that defines the game. Although Cannibal Chickens was originally designed as a local multiplayer game for up to four players, later updates introduced the option to include computer-controlled opponents. This allows solo players to experience the game without needing a group of friends nearby. While the AI opponents help make the game more accessible, the experience is clearly at its best when played with other human players. The unpredictable decisions and reactions of real people create far more entertaining and chaotic moments than AI behavior. Visually, the game uses a bright and colorful 2D cartoon style that reinforces its comedic tone. The chickens themselves are expressive and exaggerated, with playful animations that highlight their frantic movements during matches. The environments are simple but vibrant, using bold colors and clear shapes that keep the gameplay easy to follow even when multiple players are rushing across the screen at once. This visual clarity is particularly important during intense moments when several chickens are chasing each other around the arena. The sound design adds to the lighthearted atmosphere with playful sound effects and energetic audio cues. Each successful swallow is accompanied by exaggerated sound effects that emphasize the game’s slapstick humor. Background music remains upbeat and fast-paced, matching the constant motion of the gameplay. The audio elements are not particularly complex, but they contribute to the lively party-game atmosphere that the developers were aiming to create. Despite its entertaining concept, Cannibal Chickens does have some limitations that become noticeable over time. The gameplay revolves almost entirely around the single mechanic of chasing and swallowing other players. While this mechanic works well for short bursts of multiplayer fun, it can begin to feel repetitive during extended sessions. Without additional gameplay modes or significant variations in mechanics, the experience can start to feel somewhat limited. Another drawback is the relatively small amount of content available. The number of arenas and gameplay variations is modest, which means players may see everything the game has to offer fairly quickly. For a party game, this may not be a major problem when playing occasionally with friends, but it does limit the game’s long-term replay value compared to larger multiplayer titles. Even with these limitations, Cannibal Chickens still succeeds at delivering a chaotic and humorous multiplayer experience. Its simple controls make it easy for new players to jump in, while the unpredictable nature of matches ensures that each round produces plenty of comedic moments. The fast respawn system and constant movement keep the action flowing without long pauses or downtime. Overall, Cannibal Chickens is a small but entertaining party game that focuses on quick, chaotic matches and lighthearted competition. While its limited mechanics and content prevent it from reaching the depth of larger multiplayer games, its absurd premise and accessible gameplay make it a fun diversion in the right setting. When played with friends, the frantic chase mechanics and constant reversals of fortune can create memorable moments that capture the spirit of classic couch multiplayer games. Rating: 6/10
