Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) was one of the most anticipated games in recent years. Since the 2019 reboot of Modern Warfare was so successful, players expected the sequel to be even better. Many fans hoped for better maps, smoother gameplay, exciting new features, and regular updates that would keep the game fresh. While Modern Warfare II definitely looks amazing and has some fun moments, it also has a lot of problems that kept it from reaching its full potential. Because of its confusing menus, slow gameplay, questionable design choices, and lack of exciting content, many players believe Modern Warfare II is one of the more disappointing games in the Call of Duty franchise. One thing almost everyone agrees on is that the game looks incredible. The graphics are some of the best in the series, with realistic lighting, detailed environments, and great character animations. The guns look and sound realistic, making every firefight feel intense. The campaign also has some exciting missions that feel like scenes from an action movie. Whether you’re driving through a convoy, sneaking through enemy territory, or fighting on a ship during a storm, the game does a great job of creating memorable moments. Even though the graphics are impressive, good visuals cannot fix gameplay problems. One of the biggest complaints from players was how much slower the game felt compared to previous Call of Duty titles. In older games, players could move quickly around the map using advanced movement techniques. In Modern Warfare II, many of those movement options were removed or slowed down. Sprinting, aiming, and reacting to enemies all felt slower, which caused matches to become less exciting. Instead of rewarding aggressive players, the game often rewarded players who stayed in one spot and waited for enemies to come to them. Another feature that frustrated players was the perk system. Instead of starting each match with all of your chosen perks, you had to wait for some of them to unlock during the game. This change confused many players because the old system worked just fine. Important perks sometimes became available too late to make much of a difference, making the feature feel unnecessary. Rather than adding strategy, it mostly added frustration. The multiplayer maps also received a lot of criticism. While some maps looked great, many players thought they had poor layouts. There were too many windows, rooftops, and long sightlines where enemies could hide. This made moving around the map risky because you could be shot from several different directions at once. Instead of encouraging fast action, many matches turned into slow games where players spent more time waiting than fighting. Weapon balance was another issue throughout the game’s life. Certain guns were clearly stronger than others, causing many players to use the same weapons every match. While the developers released updates to improve balance, new overpowered weapons often replaced the old ones. This made multiplayer feel repetitive because players who wanted to compete seriously usually had to use whichever gun was currently the strongest. One of the most criticized parts of Modern Warfare II was its menu system. Something as simple as changing your class or finding a game mode often required clicking through several confusing menus. Many players joked that the menus looked more like a streaming service than a video game. While this might seem like a small problem, players spend a lot of time navigating menus between matches. When they are difficult to use, the overall experience becomes much more frustrating. The progression system also disappointed many fans. Unlocking new weapons and attachments required leveling up completely different guns first. For example, if you wanted an attachment for your favorite assault rifle, you might first need to level up a battle rifle that you didn’t even enjoy using. While this encouraged players to try different weapons, many people felt forced into using guns they disliked instead of simply playing the way they wanted. Another complaint involved the amount of new content after launch. Although the game received seasonal updates with new weapons, maps, and operators, many players believed there simply wasn’t enough fresh content to keep multiplayer interesting. Several fan-favorite maps from older Call of Duty games were missing at launch, and many of the new maps failed to become classics. As a result, some players became bored more quickly than expected. Many fans also believed the developers focused too much attention on Warzone instead of traditional multiplayer. Warzone is extremely popular, but many longtime Call of Duty players mainly enjoy six-versus-six multiplayer matches. They felt that multiplayer updates came too slowly because so much development time was spent supporting Warzone instead. Skill-Based Matchmaking, commonly called SBMM, remained another controversial topic. The system tries to place players with others of similar skill levels. While this sounds fair, many players felt that every match became overly competitive. Instead of being able to relax and casually play after school or work, every game felt like a tournament where everyone was trying as hard as possible. This made the experience stressful instead of fun for many people. Despite all these problems, Modern Warfare II is not a terrible game. The shooting mechanics are satisfying, the campaign is entertaining, and playing with friends can still be a lot of fun. The Gunsmith customization system allows players to create many different weapon builds, giving plenty of options for experimenting. The game also received regular updates that fixed bugs and introduced new content over time. The biggest reason many players consider Modern Warfare II disappointing is because expectations were so high. After the success of Modern Warfare (2019), fans expected the sequel to improve nearly everything. Instead, several new features made the game feel less enjoyable than its predecessor. The slower movement, confusing progression system, frustrating menus, and controversial gameplay decisions prevented the game from becoming the classic that many fans hoped it would be. In conclusion, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has excellent graphics, enjoyable gunplay, and an exciting campaign, but those strengths are outweighed by frustrating multiplayer decisions and design choices. While some players still enjoy the game, many others believe it failed to live up to its potential. For those reasons, Modern Warfare II is often remembered as a game with great ideas but disappointing execution, making it one of the most debated entries in the Call of Duty series.
