With its regenerating health mechanic, Call of Duty 2 is where the series started to become more about "the experience" than "git gud". That said this game is pretty challenging on the higher difficulties. The enemy AI is quite good.
It functions... but I was so bored. Basically a remake of the first Call of Duty (British campagin especially steals a bunch of set pieces from various parts of that game but does them worse in every possable way), everything else is just the same 3 missions over and over again. Go to checkpoint, destroy tank or mortar, defend. That's basically it. I genuinely cannot understand how this could have been some peoples favourite COD, when COD 1 has a Russian Campaign on par with World at War, varied and interesting missions, and, as stated, way better set pieces (Just compare the in the car chase mission in COD 1's "Normandy Route 13", with COD 2's "Outnumbered and Outgunned" and you'll see what I mean). I've also heard people say this game makes them feel like "Just another soilder in the war" (In a good way) and I really wanted that... but I felt like the protagonist of a theatre show depicting the war, rather than an expendable nobody just doing their part. With the enemy only spawning in after I pass the many triggers (most of which are in doorways), causing them to enter stage left, and all my allies were my back-up dancers shooting the objects the enemy are hidding behind in the exact same spot, no matter all of their positions, to give the faint illusion of war. This is best explained through the D-day mission, which starts with my allies climbing ropes while ignoring the nazis shooting at them, AND ME, on the cliff edge. Then I'll reach the top and see a wide, practically flat terrain, completely clear of enemies, except for the back machine gunners and a bunker. I walk into the trench, enemies sapwn to my left and repeatedly kill me while my allies watch. I get them and my allies stand around because I "The protagonist of that one Steven Spielberg movie reference" haven't walked far enough to hit the trigger to get them to advance. Later on in the mission, I had to single handedly take out a line of enemies in a trench, then I walked to my objective on the top right and there was a squad there! They could have flanked them so easily if were just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ programmed!! Enemies are also really spongy for some reason? The master race takes like 2-4 shot, on average, to consistently take down, even with headshots (Played on Hardened). I've got mixed feelings on 1 hit kill headshots myself, but this just made the game feel like a trudge (In a NOT good way) and coupled with the repedative missions, and the grenade spam making you constanly WAIT, I got so bored I turned down the volume and watch Youtube on the side. Then I defeated WW2 or something. I don't care anymore... POSITIVES! The Russian tutorial making you throw potatoes was cute... I liked the setting of the British campaign... am... it ended... that's it. bye!
nice :)
Even though Call of Duty 2 is an old game, it is absolutely incredible. I bought it on Steam because I wanted a legal copy that works properly and I was honestly surprised how well this game has aged. Multiplayer is still fun today, especially with friends, and the singleplayer campaign remains one of the best WWII experiences in gaming. This game proves that great game design is timeless. A true classic and one of the best WWII shooters ever made. Highly recommended.
Feels nostalgic to play but regardless it's still one of the best COD title. The pacing and challenge on maps feels great, game design fundamental wins over fancy effects
