A fun roguelite with a crazy story and where you combine different weapons into new weapons. It has 2 hardcore achievements, for completing the game on hardcore without losing a life. In each level you will complete fighting sections with visiting shops, recruiting new people for your train and more like that. I had a lot of fun while playing through the game, which took me around 3 a 4 hours. However, it started to feel a bit the same around the end. There are a few weapons and yes with upgrades they change a little but not enough to make them feel different. I had 3 preferred weapons from like the 7 or 8 main weapons and then it was just combining those with others to change their effect a little. This is totally fine but mentioning on the Steam store page how many combos there are possible might give the wrong impression and higher the expectations. What I love about the game was the humor and the crazy boss fights. They felt different from each other and they did crazy things. Also the artwork and the passive upgrades were very nice! I also love that the game isn't too long. It doesn't overstay its welcome! To unlock all the achievements you have to play 2 times through the game. First on any difficulty you like, and after you beat the game the hardcore mode becomes available. This is directly why the game is so challenging, there is an achievement to beat the game on hardcore mode without losing a life. You can backup your save from time to time to make this a bit easier, but it still will be such a challenge. Especially the last boss fight. The other achievements are for most of the things you'll do while completing the game, leveling up your weapon to the max level, having 10 passives at the same time, find the other recruitments, beat the bosses. There are hidden rooms, an an achievement to find 1 and to find 6 of them. They are not in the second area but in the other areas you can find secret rooms that will not be visible on your map. And last but not least, there is an achievement for buying every item from Sam on your train. I missed that in his wagon he has a shop as well, which unlocks new passives that can spawn in the levels. Highly recommend checking his shop out early on! I give Calcium Chaos: Derailed 3 out of 5 stars. Boring, basic "roguelike", with paid reviews clogging up the review section. I'm making this review because the steam page says all of the 50 reviews are 100% positive while you have people giving it thumbs up with such amazing reviews as "So cool" or "It's good" or "It's pretty OK" They claim there's "millions of weapons" but in reality they're counting the same weapons like hundreds of times, because you combine base weapons to create a "new weapon" but the order doesn't matter. So Cards + Fireworks + Nails is the same as Nails + Fireworks + Cards which is the same as Cards + nails + fireworks which is the same as Nails + cards + fireworks, and so on. But they counted those all as separate "Weapon combos". In other words, there's actually about...ten real weapons and half of them are TERRIBLE. The "Zombies ate my neighbors" weapons opened the possibility for really interesting, really unique playstyles. Instead we have "Machine gun / shotgun / SMG / Fire damage / Explosives" as if we're using normal guns but with png's of eggs instead of bullets. And the rogue items are the same old same old trash filler items that you see in every basic, talentless roguelike. + % [Insert basic stat such as attack, defense, attack speed, range, movespeed or health.] That's it. There's nothing that is really just head-turning or interesting. You just end up with the same build every run because there's no real variety, even as you unlock more and more it's only adding really basic stuff. Like, oh my goooosh, chain lightning? you shouldn't have. Oh you can set enemies on FIIIIRE? HOW ORIGINAL. Save your money. $10 is way too much. $2.50 is too much. FREE is too much. Your time is worth more than this game's asking price, even if there IS no price. I promise. Just go play a good roguelike, there's so many.
A very enjoyable roguelite arcade shooter, reminiscent of Binding of Isaac or Cult of the Lamb. The big draw of the game is the mechanic of weapon combinations, which allows for a truly staggering amount of varied playstyles and possibilities. There's also a heavy emphasis on couch co-op, which suits the game really well, though the single player campaign is very enjoyable on its own. I also want to shout out the art style, which is both cute and funny at the same time; there's something reminiscent of the classic Newgrounds games about it, which is absolutely a positive in my book. Very refreshing to see a game that doesn't default to faux-retro pixel art. For players who have played similar games before, I would probably encourage playing on the hard difficulty, as the middle-of-the-road one might not offer much of a challenge. For newbies wanting to broach the genre of twin stick shooters, Calcium Chaos is a great offering to get you started, without having to suffer the constant setbacks of Binding of Isaac, or the tedious micro-management of Cult of the Lamb. Highly recommended for the price.
This game is really fun to play with friends! The different weapon combinations gave me unique experiences each time I played. Also the music and cartoon style art are lovely
Twin-shooter that makes progress easy with strong weapons and useful gadgets. The game begins with Robin crashing a train into Amir's house. These two are the playable characters, and you can select which one to play on the train, although other characters will appear later. It does not matter because everyone plays the same way. The train is also where you choose levels. They must be played in order, although you can always replay them. The gameplay revolves around the twin-shooter mechanic. Aside from movement, you can dash through holes and evade opponent projectiles. You do not have a personal weapon because you are given two random weapons every time you start a stage. The bad news is that if you wish to use another weapon, you must access your inventory and switch manually; the good news is that weapons can be combined. This can be done in workshops, and the whole mechanic is similar to upgrading. The first weapon you choose will always be the primary, while the second will be sacrificed to upgrade it. There is no cost for doing this, and you can easily disassemble them if you are dissatisfied with the results. A weapon can be upgraded multiple times, although this is earned gradually as you progress through the game. The fun part is that you might get different results depending on the sacrificed weapon, However, the choice of weaponry is limited, so you will most likely choose one that works and stick with a combination from start to finish. Alslo, the sixth upgrade is broken and doesn't unlock even when you grab the toolbox. The game takes through four worlds, each with five stages. You start in the suburbs, continue on to the jungle, and so on. Main enemy are skeletons in various shapes and forms, and some new ones are introduced in each world. Stages are made up of arenas that close off their exits and spawn enemies as you enter. After defeating everyone, exits become available, and you can choose where to go next. There is a map to help you navigate the various exits, although each stage only comprises about 7 rooms. It’s all very straightforward with an occasional bonus room with a challenging fight or free chests. The reward for clearing a room is a box or chest containing shards. Some of these shards can also be obtained by destroying destructible assets. Sometimes you will locate a more important-looking chest that also contains an item. These provide a little advantage, such as faster speed and increased critical hits, and you can hold multiples of the same type. The goal of each level is to find a signpost that will allow you to progress to the next stage. Like similar roguelite games, you can sometimes choose between two paths They feature icons that show what you may expect, such as bones representing basic stages with enemies, a fork where you can obtain free things, and special areas where you can discover specific weapons, such as a feather in a chicken coop. Aside from stuff and weapons, you can find abilities if you go to the right place on the map. These are not that useful because you need to fill up the bar before you can use it. This is done by killing enemies. The primary goal is to reach the exclamation point at the end, when you must defeat a bunch of enemies or a boss to receive a cool reward. For example, the first level provides you a new train cart, while the second introduces a new crewmember who sells new items. After completing the entire stage, all objects obtained will be crushed and transformed into milk cartons. These are used in vending machine in the train to purchase useful gadgets such as marker that shows the signpost or portable workshops. Once bought, they will always be active. One bug might cause some frustration. Sometimes, the stage's objective doesn't show up, so you won't be able to finish the stage or continue. All you can do is return to the train, but in this case you lose all rewards. There's also some strange gadget that's supposed to show something, but I never noticed anything. It must be one of rare broken features in the game.
I got to meet the creative team behind this fun and exciting game back in 2023 at a gaming convention in Denmark. What a dedicated team they had back then because now they have released this masterpiece of a game. The game feels and looks like to me a updated arcade game with controls for both controler and pc and a great working story. Keep up the good work. I LOVE IT :D
10/10. One old weird trick with regular household items - The military hates him.
I've always wanted to combine chicken eggs, an electronic toaster and a set of playing cards and create a doomsday device. This game is pretty fun, I don't normally like roguelites but this is definitely the exception
Super fun & charming game. Great idea with the weird combination weapons.
This is a game, with a quirky theme. It plays like twin-stick top-down action adventure. On easy and medium modes it is very kids friendly. On hard mode a lot tougher (I've heard there is an even harder mode to unlock). Weapon combos are great fun. I've played quite a few couch-coop sessions with my two sons. We hooked up xbox controllers to the PC, and connected it to the big TV. This is where the game really shines. I recommend playing it coop with 2-3 players.
