About

In a tightly packed hand-crafted map with two square kilometers of vertically interconnected sprawling caverns filled with branching paths to explore at your leisure, as well as over fifteen smaller areas accessible from the main map - each meticulously crafted and filled with collectables, enemies and quests.

Leveling, equipment, collectibles, consumables. Start with a rusty sword, wooden spear and scrappy plank shield. Replace them with powerful artifacts hidden deep in the caves. Grow stronger as you collect lord shards, and conquer the dark expanse.

Numerous combat options are available to the player. Pick and choose between a spear, sword/shield combo and the Boomslang powder rifle. Wear the skin of your enemies after dispatching them. Many of the fifteen enemy types can drop their own limbs as wearable armor pieces, as well as unique consumable items.

Sign away your soul to a primordial demon and do its bidding. Your main quest has non-linear objectives, as well as two possible endings. Tackle your tasks in any order you see fit as you explore. Neglect your duties entirely and focus on trivial side-questing, if you so desire. I’m sure Talurbas wont mind.

Interact with an ensemble of unique characters. Many interesting figures lurk in these dark lands. Should you stumble into them on your journey, they might be willing to share some words – or ask for a favor.

The rich, claustrophobic soundscape delivered by over an hour of original soundtrack will have you reeling with anxiety as you explore the caverns of Borros.

Burrow Wing, developed and published by Semxy, is a first-person exploration-focused RPG that builds its identity around immersion, vertical world design, and a quiet sense of unease rather than fast-paced action or heavily guided progression. The game begins with a simple but effective setup: you find yourself dropped into a vast underground cavern system with little explanation, and from that moment forward, the experience is driven almost entirely by your own curiosity. It does not rush to define its objectives or hold the player’s hand, instead allowing the environment itself to become the primary source of direction and motivation. The world design is easily the most compelling aspect of Burrow Wing. The cavern system is not just large, but intricately layered, with a strong emphasis on verticality that sets it apart from more conventional exploration games. Movement through the environment often involves navigating up and down through tight tunnels, open chasms, and hidden pathways that interconnect in surprising ways. This creates a strong sense of spatial awareness, where understanding the layout of the world becomes as important as progressing through it. Exploration feels deliberate and sometimes disorienting, but in a way that reinforces the game’s tone rather than detracting from it. Each discovery feels earned, whether it is a new route, a hidden area, or a piece of equipment that opens up further possibilities. Gameplay builds on this exploration loop by introducing light RPG elements that provide structure without overwhelming the core experience. Players gradually acquire weapons, shields, and other equipment that improve their ability to survive encounters and venture deeper into the caves. There is a sense of progression tied to both finding and upgrading gear, which helps maintain engagement even when the pace slows. Combat is present but not dominant, functioning as a complementary system rather than the main focus. Encounters are scattered throughout the environment and provide moments of tension, but they rarely overshadow the act of exploration itself. The combat mechanics are functional and straightforward, offering just enough depth to support the game’s structure. Different weapons provide slight variations in approach, and enemies occasionally drop items that can be used to enhance the player’s capabilities. However, the system does not evolve significantly over time, and its simplicity becomes more noticeable as the game progresses. For players primarily interested in exploration, this may not be an issue, but those expecting more intricate combat systems may find it lacking. Narrative elements are delivered in a fragmented and understated manner. Rather than presenting a clear storyline, the game offers bits of information through interactions, environmental details, and occasional objectives. There is an overarching goal tied to completing certain tasks and forming a connection with a mysterious entity, but much of the story is left open to interpretation. This approach aligns with the game’s overall design philosophy, encouraging players to piece together meaning rather than having it explicitly explained. It adds to the sense of mystery, though it may leave some players wanting a more defined narrative direction. Atmosphere is one of the game’s strongest qualities. The underground setting is paired with a soundscape that emphasizes isolation, with ambient noises and subtle audio cues creating a persistent sense of tension. The lack of open, bright spaces contributes to a feeling of confinement, making exploration both intriguing and slightly uncomfortable. Lighting is used effectively to guide attention and create contrast, with darker areas enhancing the sense of danger and brighter sections offering brief moments of relief. This careful balance helps maintain immersion throughout the experience. Visually, Burrow Wing adopts a simple 3D style that prioritizes functionality over detail. The environments are not overly complex, but they are structured in a way that supports navigation and reinforces the game’s focus on spatial exploration. While the visuals may not stand out in terms of technical quality, they serve their purpose well, creating a cohesive and readable world that complements the gameplay. The game’s scope is relatively modest, which becomes more apparent over time. While the world itself feels expansive, the variety of mechanics and content is somewhat limited. Enemy types, equipment options, and environmental diversity do not change dramatically as the game progresses, which can lead to a sense of repetition. Additionally, the lack of clear guidance may occasionally result in moments of uncertainty, particularly when players are unsure how to advance or where to go next. Despite these limitations, Burrow Wing succeeds in delivering a focused and immersive experience that stands out through its world design and atmosphere. It does not attempt to compete with larger RPGs in terms of scale or complexity, instead offering a more contained journey that emphasizes exploration and mood. For players who enjoy getting lost in carefully constructed environments and uncovering their secrets at their own pace, it provides a satisfying and memorable experience. In the end, Burrow Wing is a game that rewards patience and curiosity, offering a unique take on exploration-driven design even if its systems remain relatively simple. Its strengths lie in how it builds and presents its underground world, while its weaknesses stem from limited variety and mechanical depth. For the right audience, it can be a quietly engaging adventure that leaves a lasting impression through atmosphere alone. Rating: 7/10
