Bug Attack! is a game inspired by arcade classics including Missile Command and Space Invaders.

Players are tasked with protecting their building as long as they can. Bugs emerge from the ground, many of which from random locations, at an increasing rate. Which is the greater enemy? The bug horde, or your own nerves?

To help, once you've earned certain amounts of points, you earn powerful bug bombs, and health-restoring building repair kits- but not even these can fight the bugs off for long!

Want to team up with a friend? Plug in a controller, and a second player can take command of a building-mounted turret(don't ask, it's a game!) to help fight off the never ending waves of creepy crawlies.

Tired of Bugs? Try to protect your wallet from the relentless savings! This mode is for one or two players, and replicates with 100% accuracy the pain your wallet feels when those Sales hit and light up your wishlist.

The Steam Version of Bug Attack! includes extras and achievements, which you unlock by scoring points over time. These unlock a variety of fun bonus options and extra gameplay modes!

Bug Attack! will continue to be supported post-launch with new modes, functionality, and extra content, free of charge.

Bug Attack! is a very simple arcade game that takes the old idea of defending yourself from endless waves and turns the enemies into bugs. I am trying to protect a building while insects keep appearing from the ground in random places, with the number of bugs increasing as I survive longer. The basic idea reminds me of old arcade games like Missile Command and Space Invaders, but instead of protecting cities from missiles or shooting aliens, I am dealing with a growing bug infestation. It is a very straightforward game, but I think that simplicity suits it. The main thing I like is how quickly the game gets going. There is no long introduction or complicated system to learn. I just start shooting bugs and try to keep my building alive for as long as possible. As I score points I can earn bug bombs that clear out dangerous groups and repair kits that restore some of the building's health. I have to decide when to use these because the attacks eventually become too much to handle with normal shooting alone. That gives the simple score attack format a little more strategy than I expected. I also like the local multiplayer options. If I have another controller connected, a second player can take control of a turret mounted on the building and help deal with the incoming bugs. There is also a separate mode based around protecting my wallet from Steam sales, which is a silly idea but fits the game's sense of humour. These extra modes make the game feel less limited than the basic survival mode suggests, especially when I want something simple that I can play with someone else for a short time. The presentation is deliberately old school and I think it works well. The pixel art is colourful and clear, which is important when the screen starts filling up with enemies. There is also a caterpillar creature that can appear and give me bonus points if I manage to squash it, although it can be easy to get distracted while trying to deal with the main attack. The Steam version also has achievements and unlockable bonus options, so there are some small reasons for me to keep improving my score after I understand the basic gameplay. The biggest problem is that there is not much depth beyond the arcade challenge. I am still doing the same basic thing every time I play, and the increasing number of bugs is really the main source of difficulty. There are no big character upgrades, long term progression systems or campaign to give me a different goal. That is not necessarily a flaw for an arcade score attack game, but it does mean I can only get so much out of it. Once I have had enough of trying to beat my previous score, there is not a huge amount left to discover. I do appreciate that the game is completely free and does not use the free to play model to sell me advantages. The optional Supporter's Pack is separate from the actual game and does not affect the gameplay. That makes the whole package feel much more straightforward than a lot of free games. I can simply download it, play the arcade modes and decide whether I enjoy the basic challenge without worrying about a progression system designed around spending money. Overall, Bug Attack! is a small and honest arcade game that knows exactly what it wants to be. I like the simple shooting, increasingly hectic waves, emergency bug bombs, repair kits, local multiplayer and the silly extra wallet mode. The biggest limitation is that the core gameplay is very repetitive and there is not enough depth to keep me playing for long sessions. For me, it works best as a quick score attack game that I can pick up for a few minutes rather than something I would treat as a main game. The fact that it is completely free makes that much easier to accept, and I think the old school arcade style gives it enough charm to be worth trying. Rating: 7/10
