I should love this game. I really enjoy Neon White, which shares a similar high-speed, precision-based gameplay style. Unfortunately, BRUTAL KATANA has several mechanics that demand an excessive level of precision, making the experience frustrating rather than exhilarating. One of the biggest issues is slicing enemies. While the game provides audio and visual indicators—a sound cue and a red glow—to signal when an enemy is in range, the attack often fails to register if the cursor is even slightly off. This inconsistency makes it incredibly frustrating when a missed slice ruins an otherwise perfect run. Later, enemies introduce a new requirement: they must be attacked either vertically or horizontally. This added complexity is not enjoyable when sprinting through a level at high speeds and practically forces memorization of enemy placements. I immediately hated this mechanic when it was introduced within the first six levels, and it completely ruined the game for me. The platforming also demands an unreasonable amount of precision despite the game's fast pace. There are sections where the player must run across pillars, but if they move too fast or too slow, they will miss the next platform and have to restart. This serves as a momentum killer rather than an enjoyable challenge. Another major momentum killer is wall running. To ascend a wall, the player must jump toward it, then leap backward to a platform behind them. However, during this sequence, the player cannot turn their camera, forcing them to stare at the wall while waiting to jump. Not only is this visually dull, but it also makes it difficult to gauge the timing of the next jump since the platforms are out of view. Worse, the timing doesn’t seem standardized because walls vary in height, adding even more guesswork to the process. The last major issue is the game's par time system for achieving three-star ratings. The required times are incredibly strict, to the point where missing by literal milliseconds can cost a top rating. While optional, this makes any slight mistake feel especially punishing and discourages experimentation. Ultimately, BRUTAL KATANA’s rigid design and memory-test-style level layouts sucked the fun out of what could have been a thrilling experience. I rarely put games down this quickly, but when a game actively frustrates me, it's hard to justify continuing. I feel bad not recommending it because it's very affordable, and I appreciate that the developer has continued adding content. I won’t be refunding it for that reason, but I hope my experience helps shape improvements in the future.
Amazing.
This game is very good, addicting leaderboard function, great movement mechanics which are maybe a bit hard to get into at first, like the 180 degree turns but then when it all clicks you feel like you are flying, the short slo-mo when you chop heads makes for a very intuitive moment for aiming and adjusting your momentum. And there's way more routes than you'd think at first! It's great, buy it, for this price, it's a steal.
Brutal Katana - A movement parkour game that has you completing 48 levels and slashing heads and statues in order to finish the game. The movement in this game is precise and I loved every moment of it. You slide, jump, grapple wall run, jump and climb. That's it. That's all this game has in the movement mechanics department, but how the game adds those together in a fluid is what really makes this game shine. The developer did a really good job crafting the mechanics and adding slashing into the mix makes for an interesting addition. This game is perfect in its simplistic design, with slicing vertically or horizontally in order to kill heads to unlock the statue and then killing the statue and completing the level. If you are looking for a fast-paced parkour game, I highly recommend this, especially more so after just coming from Downward: Enhanced Edition... One tip I can give you guys going for 3 stars on all the levels: Memorize the head slashes and positions and the biggest one, don't wall run for the entirety of the wall. You can shave off milliseconds if you jump off early.
pick it randomly, didn't expect anything. but how was I wrong... I love everything about this game: gameplay, graphics, music, ui - everything fit so perfectly! Just look at the percantage of players who get 3 stars on all levels. 32% out of all who tried this game not just completed it, but mastered each level to beat time marks. And that feeling of getting back to first levels after beating the game and having all the experience... It's soooo satisfying! I can only hope that in the future some other game would be able to bring me the same joy as this one. 10/10 from me
Hyper boosted version of Fruit Ninja - but on PC and in first person. Fantastic slashing. Feels so, so good. Trepang2 is the only game I can think of that has better katana feeling. The game is very fast and provides many movement mechanics. Sliding, instant 180 while detouching from a wall and the best wall jumping I have experienced in a game. It's better than Titanfall 2. One of the best FPP fast movement slasher games. Movement is responsive, fluid and precise - and most of all FAST. Each level takes about 30 seconds. There's insane amount of action packed into that 30 seconds. Perfecting a run is immenesly satisfying. Instant respawn makes retries efortless. No unnecessary UI garbage. As of now there are severe crashes on death screen (~ every 5-10 deaths) and game has to be manually closed through task manager. Please fix dear dev :)
If you love Fast mobility and immediete action like Neon White, you'll love this game.
Brutal Katana Review
If i can describe this game in a short sentence, it'd be "A Short wonderful and speedy Masterpiece". Brutal Katana is basically about you simply slicing up demonic like Statues, that are roaming around the world and you have to cleanse them with most beautiful Melee... a Katana. It sounds familiar abit to Neon White but its simply the perfect setting you can have for games like this one. I'll get straight into the review.
Story
It's very simple and short but it didn't need to be a massive story. The short story works so well and doesn't feel like nonsensical writing with unnecessary plots. It simply tells you what the world is about and what is causing harm to it as well as demonstrate the capability that you have to help the world out. That's literally it and it was good to read through the dialogue anyways as it is pretty engaging. (I'll call it the God's eye)... God's eye is basically your partner guiding you through the cleansing and pretty much gives the player motivation and guidance to get through it all in short and simple terms.
Gameplay
This game guides you basically through the movement and gameplay at the start of certain levels. It'll be slow, but as you progress you'll find yourself having to utilize your abilities alot more and be ready to use alot of reflexes because there's alot to come in later levels. There's about 5 mechanics you can utilize which consists of "Sliding, Wallrunning, Wallclimbing, Rope climbs and Grappling". At the start it feels imtimidating but that's the fun part of the learning curve to get into. The only issue i had with one of them was the rope climbing, it was sometimes bugging out by pushing me away from the rope for some reason but thats it. It still functioned pretty well.
Music
There's not much to be said here other than the Music is just borderline powerful during the gameplay, it allows you to simply get into the flaw and makes the experience more impactful. Good choices of music btw.
Pricing
3,99 € as a normal price. It's not that expensive, just buy it. It's a single developer and he deserves it for this kind of a quality of a game. It's even 1 Dollar/Euro during a sale. Don't be greedy.
Conclusion?
This is a masterpiece as it is fluent, fast and overall overtriumphs alot of the games out there, that most devs didn't even try to optimize at all. It can most be played on any device and is also created by the Godot Engine which is one of the best engines out there. Jonathan Fasth, if you end up reading this, i can't wait for the next projects you have in store as this was one of the best experiences i've had for a game again in a while. This concludes my Review on Brutal Katana, thank you for reading and have a good day <3
