The game is good, until you realize that the endgame is basically nonexistent. 6/10. Recommended, but you have to be really into looter shooters.
Borderlands 4 is both a very hard and very easy game to discuss. In short, it is the best borderlands game. Period. I know we all love BL2, but I think we need to cope with the fact that that was lightning in a bottle. We aren’t getting a Handsome Jack 2 and the expectation that we might serves only to make all subsequent games harder to enjoy. Full disclosure, I don’t really care about endgame grinds or raid content. I’m here for the simple fun of playing the game. The Good The plot is great. It’s a huge step up from Borderlands 3 and the choice to partially reboot the narrative was long overdue. Actually, this is my soap box for a sec. People don’t care about Borderland’s plot. I mean, they do, but not in an active sense. BL2’s plot was a podcast you listened to as you played the game. It was great because it never got in the way. BL3 was a play you had to sit and watch. BL3’s biggest issue was its pacing. It struggled because the game was broken into segments of high action, then no action. It got your heart pumping, then locked you in a room so it could tell you jokes. BL4 fixes it by never really locking you in a room. The shift has been a focus on player controlled pacing. Just wanna fart around and kill guys? No problem, go raid a base. Sick of action and want some down time? Pick up a sidequest and let people talk. Want to make progress? Do some story. BL3’s poor pacing made every other element of its story more frustrating. It wasn’t just that I found the kid annoying. It wasn’t just that characters had unearned emotional beats. It's that I was forced to sit and watch it happen. Doing away with that helped so much. The gun play is also massively stepped up. The game took elements from a bunch of other great FPS games, and smooshed them together and used it to reinforce the core loop. The hovering, dashing and grapplehook feel amazing. Turning grenades into ‘ordinances’ was a great decision and I love my throwing knives. The skill trees are huge. Each character gets 3 trees, which themselves branch off into three sections. All the choices are interesting and there is a lot of room to fuddle-duddle and fiddle-faddle. The Bad The bad stuff about this game is where things get complex. I do not know how to evaluate an $160 AUD game. That’s a ludicrous price. Even 50% off, it still feels bad. This is especially hard to swallow knowing that the game will inevitably be discounted into the dirt. The performance has apparently improved but the minimum requirements are still steep. Randy Pitchford’s response to players upset about that is also ridiculous. I’m playing the game on a six year old gaming laptop and given how much Cyberpunk 2077 I’ve played at 30-45 FPS, you have to understand that I can endure a bit of punishment. I grew up on second hand office PC’s. Playing like this feels nostalgic. That said, the high hardware requirements and excessive price of the game in an era where PC hardware is more expensive than ever means that Gearbox is asking a lot of players up front. I believe the experience is worth it even if the game looks like mud. But when Randy drops the advice to ‘simply spend thousands of dollars to play my game’. The level of tone-deaf cannot be overstated. I don’t blame people who won’t touch the game for it. This steep up-front cost is made all the harder to deal with given how hard it is to demo the game. The DRM on the game makes it impossible to “borrow” without a Hypervisor Bypass, which is scary for a lot of people. The game takes a full half an hour to initially compile its shaders (not to mention recompiling after adjusting your settings), which digs into your 2 hour refund window. The most intense sections of the game aren’t frontloaded, which means you might do fine for a second before your computer chugs. So is the game worth it? Idk. I’m having a great time and I’m keen to see what the grass looks like when I finally get a new PC. But I love Borderlands and could barely justify the game at 50% off. ♥♥♥♥ Randy. I hope Gearbox and 2K unionise. Better contracts means better games.
BL3 was better, more detailed. This game was rushed, lots of Bugs. Not worth it.
Gearbox Chef so: "Studenten hier macht was, egal was Borderlands 4 drauf klatschen und raus damit".
I know this game gets a lot of flack for performance, but honestly, performance is the least of your problems. It's a drudge through some of the blandest, most formulaic, uninspired slogfest of a story ever. The millennial humor wore out decades ago but the mofos didn't get the memo it would seem, so you're just waiting and waiting and waiting, while the mediocre character spout their trite dialogue so you can play a two minute fetch quest or your four millionth "clear the room of three waves" so you can listen to more uninspired trite writing. It doesn't end. I got about a third of the way through the game and I just gave up, not like I chose to quit the game, I simply finished yet another bland session and the next thing I know it's been weeks and I've not even touched it, and that's I feel the worst thing a game can do, not make you quit, but rather make you forget about it. I don't recommend this in the slightest, I apparently played it for 34 hours, and I felt nothing.
Honestly as someone whose been a massive fan of the series (Pre-sequel, BL2, are where i started.) I cannot help but feel while yes the story is a step forward form BL3, mostly everything else is just, okay. Having almost every mission be a grapple fest definitely is not the most fun mechanic. On top of that I cannot recommend this game, even as someone who has a 5070. This game runs like ♥♥♥♥, I have tried every pack since the first DLC. In hopes i could come back to play the game and "enjoy" endgame. When the Devs say "we hear your concerns and we are taking your support into consideration" is nothing but a slap in the face. This game has been out almost a full year, yet they have been able to release 9 DLC content packs, without proper fixes to the games engine on pc. ♥♥♥♥ you gearbox, your not getting another $ out of me.
Deluxe Edition doesnt get you the season pass lmao, what a greedy dogass company. Zero Raid bosses on launch and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ "DLC" thats just 5 missions and a vault hunter locked behind the DLC paywall. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ business practices ruining a ton of potential.
