Book of Potentia 2 is a retro-inspired dungeon crawler that aims to deliver a classic experience with some modern touches. You play as a sorceress on a quest to retrieve her stolen spell book, venturing through procedurally generated dungeons filled with monsters and treasure. While it has some charm, it ultimately feels like a missed opportunity due to several shortcomings. The game's strongest point is its visual style. The pixel art is well-done and evokes a strong sense of nostalgia for classic dungeon crawlers. The environments are colorful and varied, and the monster designs are decent, though somewhat generic. The gameplay revolves around exploring dungeons, battling enemies, and collecting loot. You have access to four elemental spells—fire, earth, wind, and ice—which can be used to defeat enemies and solve simple puzzles. The combat is simple but functional, with a focus on positioning and using the right spell for the right enemy. However, Book of Potentia 2 suffers from several issues that detract from the overall experience. The procedurally generated dungeons, while offering some variety, often feel repetitive and uninspired. The level design lacks creativity, and you'll often find yourself traversing long, empty corridors. The game also suffers from a lack of depth in its gameplay mechanics. The combat is simplistic and lacks variety, and the spell system is underdeveloped. There's not much in the way of character progression or customization, which makes the experience feel shallow. Another significant issue is the game's technical performance. It suffers from frequent frame rate drops and other technical hiccups, which can be particularly frustrating during combat. **Pros:** * Charming retro pixel art style! 👾 * Functional combat system! ⚔️ * Procedurally generated dungeons offer some variety! 🗺️ * Local co-op for two players! 🧑🤝🧑 **Cons:** * Repetitive and uninspired level design! 😔 * Simplistic gameplay with limited depth! 🤔 * Poor technical performance with frequent frame rate drops! 📉 * Lack of character progression or customization! 👤 * Generic enemy designs! 👹 **Verdict:** 5/10. Book of Potentia 2 has some charm with its retro visuals, but it ultimately falls short due to its repetitive gameplay, uninspired level design, and poor technical performance. While it might appeal to hardcore fans of retro dungeon crawlers, most players will likely find it to be a shallow and unfulfilling experience. It feels like a barebones attempt at a classic formula that needed more time in development. 🚧 But its free! *** **Disclaimer:** These reviews are based on my personal experience and opinions.
