Bloom: The Forest Burns is a small but imaginative fantasy action RPG that places greater importance on player choice than its straightforward premise initially suggests. Developed and published by Studio Fawn, the game functions as a free standalone chapter connected to the larger Bloom: Memories project. Its story centers on a forest threatened by creatures called dreklings, whose fires are putting the surrounding environment in danger. The player's immediate objective is to seek help and prevent the forest from being consumed, creating a simple but effective motivation that fits the game's nature-focused setting. What makes the adventure more interesting is that confronting enemies is not necessarily the only solution. Players can fight directly, prepare carefully for dangerous encounters, use stealth, or attempt more peaceful approaches. This flexibility gives the game a stronger role-playing character because decisions involve more than selecting weapons or defeating everything encountered. A player who prefers aggressive action can engage enemies head-on, while someone interested in exploration and experimentation can search for alternatives. The ability to approach situations differently helps compensate for the relatively limited scale of the overall experience. The creature system is one of its more distinctive concepts. Creatures can respond to aspects of their surroundings through senses such as sight, hearing, and smell, while the game also introduces the unusual idea that emotions can influence their awareness. This potentially makes encounters more dynamic than simply entering an enemy's predetermined detection range. It encourages players to observe behavior and think about how they move through hostile areas. The concept also complements the game's peaceful and stealth-oriented options because understanding a creature can become just as useful as overpowering it. Exploration plays an equally important role. The forest contains unusual plants, abilities, and other discoveries that reinforce the idea that this is an ecosystem rather than merely a collection of combat arenas. Magic and fantasy elements are integrated into the natural environment, giving players reasons to investigate their surroundings instead of rushing directly toward the objective. This approach works particularly well with the game's hand-drawn 2D visual style. The illustrated presentation gives the vegetation and creatures a distinctive appearance and supports the mixture of fantasy beauty and environmental danger. Combat remains an important option, and players who prefer a more traditional action RPG approach can confront threats directly. However, Bloom: The Forest Burns becomes more interesting when its different systems are considered together. Fighting, stealth, exploration, preparation, environmental awareness, and peaceful interaction all contribute to the same central idea: the player should decide how to respond to the forest's problems. It is not an enormously complex RPG, but the underlying philosophy gives the experience considerably more personality than a basic hack-and-slash adventure. The narrative premise benefits from its environmental focus as well. The dreklings are threatening a place that the game encourages players to explore and appreciate, making their destructive fires more meaningful than a generic monster invasion. The contrast between a colorful fantasy forest and the possibility of its destruction creates a suitable sense of urgency. Even though the story is not presented as an enormous narrative epic, it provides enough context to make exploration and intervention feel purposeful. Its biggest weakness is its limited scope. Because Bloom: The Forest Burns is designed as a standalone chapter associated with Bloom: Memories, players expecting a lengthy campaign, extensive character development, enormous equipment systems, or dozens of elaborate quests may come away wanting more. The game works better when approached as a concentrated demonstration of Studio Fawn's world and design concepts. Its free nature makes this easier to accept, since players can experience its ideas without making a financial commitment. The relatively modest presentation also means that the game's appeal depends heavily on whether its artistic direction and experimental mechanics connect with the player. Those seeking highly polished blockbuster combat or an exceptionally deep RPG progression system are not the primary audience. Instead, the experience is better suited to players who enjoy smaller independent adventures where atmosphere, environmental interaction, unusual mechanics, and artistic personality matter as much as raw content quantity. Overall, Bloom: The Forest Burns is an appealing introduction to Studio Fawn's fantasy universe. Its hand-drawn world, endangered forest setting, unusual creature senses, discoverable plants and abilities, and combination of combat, stealth, and peaceful solutions create an adventure with a recognizable identity. The limited size prevents these concepts from reaching the depth they might achieve in a much larger RPG, but the experience still demonstrates considerable imagination. For players interested in atmospheric 2D fantasy adventures that encourage experimentation instead of demanding constant combat, it is a worthwhile journey. Rating: 7/10

Really cool game, great art style and direction. If you enjoy nature, forests, or druids, this is a game for you. I have some interface and control complaints but I think they could be overcome if I'd paid more attention to the tutorial. Don't know if the main game will ever be released (apparently it's been stuck in development hell for a long time) but I guess we'll see. I mean, you'd think the game will come out, since it was successfully funded on Kickstarter and already raised $60,000 (20k above their goal).

Edit: Well, looks like the project is cancelled, according to Kickstarter and Patreon. Alas, it really is pretty. Original: The game's clunky and is unfinished. However, some of the problems should have been sorted out before this demo (?), or chapter (?) was released. Controls are convoluted. Navigating menus is awkward with a keyboard and mouse and I couldn't get the controller bindings to work at all. Hotkeys don't have ways to toggle between themselves, interacting with objects is slow, inspecting creatures is bizarre and uses two mouse buttons, and there's no indicator of which item or skill you're using. There's an emotional state GUI with no legend or descriptions. I... don't know what I'm reviewing. This is unfinished, but looks beautiful, and if it's ever completed and some of the basics are sorted out, then it may become a good game.
An Interesting world, but I have no idea what I am doing. A better tutorial would not go amiss, as I'm very lost. Controls are wonky and the bow lacks any impact so I don't know if its working or not. However, the love and care that has gone into the world and setting is enough for me to give this a positive. 5/10 I honestly just want to see what this is and where this goes
Before I played Bloom: The Forest Burns, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
The art style of the game is beautiful! I love it so much! It's so unique and interesting. The controls can be a bit awkward when battling, but I think that's more because I'm not great at these kind of games.
