Zorluğuyla, atmosferiyle apayrı bir dünya. Bayıldım.
We would like to thank the dev for providing us with a copy of this game for review
When I first saw Blood Within, I was amazed by the art style and the setting that the game had going for it. From the gameplay I have seen, I was honestly impressed and looking forward to what I was about to play. With all that said, there are some issues with this game that I do need to address, and I’ll talk about them all here. One thing I should mention about this game is that it was made by a single person so I wanted to see what one person could make for a game like this. I love 2D platformers, so I really wanted to see what this game had to offer.
Pros and Cons
Pros

Good story that sets the theme of the game
Nice pixel art style
The soundtrack is decent
Cons

Gameplay is very rough, jumping is very clunky
Combat is sluggish, enemies give you no indication on when they will attack
Some enemies can shoot you through walls
Boss fights aren’t very special
The game does not give you a reason to explore its world
There are a few bugs

Story
The story starts out with Captain Thorne, who is out on a patrol mission, him and two of his men have found that The Bloodstar, which protects the Earth from evil, has crash-landed on Earth and now demons roam the outer castle walls. Throne is not a match for the demons and is taken out until he is rescued by a Grey Man who gives him demon power to help fight them. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3294399137 The story for Blood Within is nice, it sets the game theme up very well and it’s interesting. I feel that there are some references to Berserk in this game as there are a few things that remind me of that series in this game.
Gameplay
Despite the story being good, Blood Within’s gameplay is rough to say the least. My issue mainly comes with how the game controls, it works on a basic level but when it comes to jumping, the game is rather clunky. You see, Throne jumps very slowly, and I assume this is because of the giant sword he is wielding. However, on certain platforms, he will jump faster and higher than usual to reach higher areas in the game. I never really played a game where I don’t feel like jumping but I end up having to do it to progress through the game. Combat is also sluggish in a few ways as well; you have your basic attacks, but the issue comes with a mixture of two issues I have with combat. Enemies never give you any indication of when they attack, plus you have no way to cancel your attacks at all. There is a way to block an attack and if you time it correctly, you can even stun the enemy and get a few hits in. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3294398566 Although with how the game handles its enemies, it’s a bit difficult to engage in combat in any meaningful way. On top of that there are some ranged enemies in the game, and if they see you, they will of course shoot you, but they can also shoot through walls. Yes, that’s right, the ranged enemies have X-ray vision, and their projectiles can go through walls, and you can’t do anything about it. The boss fights also aren’t very special either as they just have a few basic attacks that you can block to try and stun them. They don’t really add anything special and just feel like a giant enemy you yourself have to take out. The world you explore isn’t all that interesting either, you see, it may not seem like it at first but Blood Within is a Metroid-venia type of game, or at least I think. As the game has these checkpoints that you can teleport back to, which I believe is meant for you to find stuff in the game. However, the game does not give you a reason to explore its world. I am currently playing Blasphemous 2 and Tunic while reviewing this game and those games encourage you to explore those games to their fullest. In Tunic’s case, the game doesn’t necessarily give you an objective either or any clues on its story. Dark Souls also does what both of these games do but has a world that you can also explore. Both give you hidden items or abilities for you to find and use to help you in your next fight or to access new areas in the game. I know I shouldn’t be comparing games made by a team to someone who is a solo developer, but I think this is a good example of how a game makes progression. I don’t know if I am getting anywhere in this game, and I don’t know if I am getting anywhere in Blasphemous 2 either, but I know I am making progress somehow. There are a few more things that this game does have that are good, like a skill tree that has different abilities for you to use. You will need Demon Essence to level up and to do that you need to defeat enemies. There is even a witch you can find in the game to reset your skill tree to try a different path and or upgrade system, so that’s a cool thing to mention. There is also controller support, the game may not say it but I was able to play on my controller with no issue whatsoever.
Graphics and Performance
The pixel art style is also something I would like to add as something I liked seeing. I tested the game on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, AMD Ryzen 5 1500X Quad-Core Processor 3.50, 16 GB of RAM, I had no issues while I was playing the game, and it should be able to run on any PC. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3294397753 I did have a few bugs though, like some enemies clipping into the floor and the enemies that can shoot through walls that I mentioned earlier. Although none of these bugs are game-breaking.
Final Verdict
Blood Within has some interesting ideas going for it but with how the gameplay and combat are handled, I can’t really see myself playing the game for much longer. HOWEVER, I am going to say this, as much as I am not recommending Blood Within right now, I think this game has potential. The developer is still updating this game and they are making DLC for the game as well, so there is some work being done as I am reviewing it. For those who are curious, I would recommend keeping an eye on this game, as I do think there is something this could one day be a hidden gem if the developer listens to community feedback and continues updating the game. Blood Within takes you to a dystopian world ruled by darkness, where you're trying to save the realm from demons. As Thorne, the main character, you're not just defending the world from these sudden demon attacks but also trying to figure out where they came from. If you love souls-like games, you'll quickly get into Blood Within, especially with its challenging boss battles. Along the way, you meet different enemies and interesting characters who add depth to the story. As you uncover the mystery of Bloodstar, you explore new worlds and learn their unique stories. Even though it's a 2D game, Blood Within brings character mechanics to life. Thorne might only wield a sword, but the attack animations, various skills, and parry feature keep things exciting. What breaks up the monotony is the Deck of Fate, allowing you to customize Thorne's approach and gameplay style. This adds a new layer to the game and gives you plenty of options to experiment with. The creatures in the game are also full of life, each with its attack style and strategy against Thorne. The variety of bosses and their unique attack patterns are really impressive since the quantity of the bosses is taken into consideration. Blood Within starts with a pretty straightforward story, but as you progress, there are lots of twists and surprises (seriously, play it yourself to avoid spoilers!). The game's universe is filled with stunning map designs and visuals that perfectly capture the dark, dystopian vibe. The unique environments pull you into the world, making you feel despair, loneliness, and fear. In short, Blood Within is a fresh challenge for fans of the souls-like genre. The coolest part? It was made by just one person! It always amazes me how one person could make such a brilliant game. To be fair, it might not redefine the genre, but it has everything a good souls-like game needs. I highly recommend giving it a try!
Boss fightlarına odaklanılmış, test ekibi dışında oyun tek kişi tarafından yapıldığından kaynaklı beklentilerinizi çok yüksek tutmayın fakat souls-like türünü seviyorsanız eğer özellikle bazı boss fightları seveceğinizi düşünüyorum, kayda değer seviyede heyecanlı ayrıca yeni bir türk oyun yapımcısı olduğundan kaynaklı bu tarz insanlara destek vermemiz gerektiğini düşünüyorum, bir şans verin derim.
Update 2: after sever hours and reaching the second half, I'm changing the review back to not recommended. Progress and combat balance is bad - it's just boss battle after boss battle, sometimes two at the same time without any saving. Parrying and dodge is pointless and impossible because of attacks that "teleport" to your location and the number of attacks the boss performs before standing still. There is no strategy involved and all fights play out the same way. Some skills are broken - the last and most expensive apparently increases your power, but it doesn't become "active" when you buy it and the price is still there as if you never bought it in the first place. You can waste all your currency on them without any change. This bug occurs for several upgrades. Others are pointless. Fireball deals pitiful damage, and the unique power of turning into a demon is locked behind rage bar you will never fill up. Stages don't render properly - some are just blocky mess without any texture. Update: Changing my review to "recommended" because the two major problems (not being able to continue at a certain point and lost blood) have been fixed. Game is cobbled together from various pieces that don’t work well or are completely broken. The story follows a knight who dies against a powerful demon. Fortunately, a mysterious stranger offers him a chance to live again and take his revenge. In addition to attacking and blocking, your hero can jump and roll to avoid attacks. The fun aspect is that you can roll when jumping. Attack has just one button, so it could become monotonous after a while. On the other hand, you can spam attack as much as you want, so you don't need to worry about stamina. The same goes for roll or dodge. This makes it more handy to evade enemy assaults rather than block, which is the only technique that uses stamina. With more formidable foes and bosses, blocking is still advised due to the stun effect. You can only stun an enemy when their stamina is down. Furthermore, stamina is only wasted when you press it too fast or slow. You will keep your stamina if you press it at the last second. You gain rage when you hit an enemy, and blood when you kill it. Rage fills a bar and somewhat raises your stats. You will only receive the best results when you hit a lot of foes because it resets to zero when you rest. This can be useful during boss fights. Upgrades can be purchased using demon blood at save points or Bloodstones. With branches for stamina, strength, and health, the skill tree is somewhat simple. Upgrade nodes frequently split into two alternatives, yet everything is available for purchase. The cost of each successive upgrade increases. However, because enemies reappear when you rest at save sites, you can grind all you want. Resting also replenishes your health potions. You can boost the quantity and effectiveness of the potions once you locate the right ingredient. Quick travel to any unlocked point is the final helpful function of save points. Dying follows the modern trend of leaving stuff behind, so you need to return to the place of your death if you want to recover all collected demon blood. You lose everything if you die before grabbing the tombstone. Too many times this doesn't work because your tombstone simply won't show up after your first death. Since you can lose thousands of blood you spent hours grinding, you can never afford the next expensive upgrade. Because you can block whatever they throw at you, enemies and bosses are not all that bad. It goes without saying that your stamina won't hold up to every attack, so you'll have to block or avoid them. Bosses only have a few simple attacks that you may learn, and once you take away half of their health, they will attack more quickly and powerfully. Bosses don’t require any strategy; you simply block them, attack one or two times, run to the other side of the arena or until your stamina recharges, and repeat. The only danger is their rage attack that happens too often. What makes the whole combat worse the more you play it is that you can’t cancel your actions. If you press attack once too many and the enemy has already started it’s attack, you have no option but to take the hit. Regretfully, every enemy cheats because it knows where to hit. When you dodge the attack and the enemy mysteriously slides across the floor to where you dodged, you continuously take cheap damage. The worst are bosses whose »slide« effect is even more noticeable because of their bigger size. Unfortunately, the world and platforming are another bad part. A map is absent. The game follows a very linear path with smaller detours. These generic stages consist of a few platforms and empty areas that are poorly constructed or contain cheap traps that kill you with a single hit, like semi-visible spike balls. The world has a few enticing items. More interesting items are cards you get from bosses. Each of the four classes contains five distinct cards. Only five cards can be equipped, however they can belong to any class you want. Your stats will be upgraded differently with each card. But you get extra benefits if you equip cards from the same class. If you want to grab everything, you'll have to take out some of the optional bosses. There are also treasures that, when equipped, grant specific perks; however, you are only able to equip three of these. Platforming is poor because of a bad and uneven jump. Your character can’t make a single jump over on onto a platform. This forces you to wall-jump, which permits you to ascend certain vertical walls indefinitely, but it doesn't seem like it belongs in the game. Oddly, there are spots where you can jump much higher without any explanation as to why. I like the game doesn’t waste your time with backtracking. First tool is a compass that transports you to the last visited bloodstone. And the second are statues before a boss fight. If the boss kills you, you can choose to respawn at a statue or bloodstone. Overall, the game has a lot to offer but it’s too broken to be enjoyable. It’s unfortunate the problems become more obvious after you spend a few hours on it - like in the Sanctuary that doesn't let you continue the game - so in the end it feels like a waste of time.

Gameplay 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍

👍 - Aucun bon point malheureusement...

The developer has made updates to the game since my initial review and has addressed, really, all of my criticisms. The game now has: controller support, animation cancelling, and improved the jump feeling (somewhat). I'm updating this to a tentative "Recommends" but I haven't beaten the game still. Combat does feel much better now though and I'm curious to see where the story goes. So, if you're itchin' for a 2D soulslike, give this one a look. ------- OLD REVIEW --------- Maybe there is something here. But with how combat works currently, it just isn't very engaging. With no animation cancelling basically it's just waiting for bosses to attack while you slowly get in one or two hits. So a lot of you and the boss staring at each other. The jump is weird and slow, but being able to dodge roll in the air and wall jump from the beginning are pretty fun. Also, wild that there is no controller support (can be solved with Steam Inputs) and also no remapping, and also it doesn't show what the controls are anywhere. I'll probably keep an eye on it for a little while to see if any changes are made but in its current state I can't recommend this game.
