Blood Metal, developed and published by Bluedrake42 and Drakeling Labs, is an unconventional first-person shooter that feels less like a traditional game and more like a focused experiment built around one central idea: hyper-detailed ballistic simulation. It doesn’t attempt to compete with polished, content-heavy shooters; instead, it carves out a distinct identity by prioritizing physics-driven interactions and raw impact over narrative or structured progression. The core gameplay is deliberately simple. Players are placed into contained arenas where they must survive against waves of enemies using a small selection of firearms. There’s no overarching story to follow, no campaign to progress through, and very little in terms of unlockable systems. Everything revolves around the immediate experience of combat. This stripped-down approach makes the game easy to jump into, but it also reveals how dependent the overall experience is on the strength of its core mechanics. Without layers of objectives or evolving scenarios, the longevity of the game rests almost entirely on how engaging its moment-to-moment gameplay feels. That moment-to-moment gameplay is where Blood Metal distinguishes itself. The game’s defining feature is its advanced damage modeling system, which simulates the physical effects of gunfire with a level of detail rarely seen in the genre. Bullets interact with targets based on velocity, trajectory, and impact, producing varied and often unpredictable results. Each encounter feels physically grounded in a way that emphasizes cause and effect rather than scripted reactions. This creates a sense of immediacy and unpredictability that can be compelling, especially for players interested in the technical side of game design. At the same time, this intense focus on simulation comes at the expense of broader gameplay depth. Enemy behavior tends to be straightforward, lacking the complexity needed to support more advanced tactics or varied strategies. The environments, while functional, don’t offer much in terms of dynamic interaction or meaningful positioning beyond basic cover and line-of-sight considerations. As a result, the experience can begin to feel repetitive once the novelty of the damage system starts to fade. Without additional layers—such as mission variety, progression systems, or more diverse enemy types—the game struggles to maintain long-term engagement. The presentation reinforces the idea that this is a project driven by experimentation rather than polish. Visually, the game is utilitarian, focusing on clarity and functionality rather than detailed world-building. The aesthetic leans heavily into a gritty, almost clinical depiction of combat, which aligns with its simulation-driven design but may not appeal to everyone. The sound design complements this approach, emphasizing the weight and impact of each shot rather than building a broader sense of atmosphere. One of the more interesting aspects of Blood Metal is its development philosophy. It feels like a project shaped by curiosity and iteration, likely influenced by community feedback and a desire to explore specific technical concepts. This gives the game a certain authenticity—it’s clear that it exists to test ideas rather than to conform to established expectations. However, that same quality also contributes to its rough edges, as the experience lacks the cohesion and refinement typically associated with more fully developed titles. Despite its limitations, Blood Metal offers a unique kind of appeal. For players who are curious about physics-based systems or who enjoy exploring unconventional game design, it provides an experience that stands apart from more traditional shooters. Its free-to-play nature further lowers the barrier to entry, making it easy to approach as a short-term experiment rather than a long-term commitment. In the end, Blood Metal is best understood as a focused concept brought to life rather than a complete, feature-rich game. It succeeds in delivering a distinctive and technically interesting take on combat, but it falls short when it comes to depth, variety, and overall polish. It’s a project with clear potential, but one that currently feels more like a foundation than a finished product. Rating: 6/10
bluedrake the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ wasted the original dev's vision and ip not worth it even for free
Can't believe I paid for this, not long after seeing BD42's video about it. His video was far better than this was, like he was playing a different (better) version. And it's been completely abandoned.
