Trauma at it's finest. DO play this game.
If arcadekitten has a million fans, then I am one of them. If arcadekitten has ten fans, then I am one of them. If arcadekitten has only one fan then that is me. If arcadekitten has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against arcadekitten , then I am against the world

An amazing game. The combat is fun and doesn't really get repetitive in the short run time of this game. Though I would recommend playing Cemetery Mary before playing this game, Blackout Hospital still stands on it's own even if you haven't played Cemetery Mary. The characters are really well and the story is really interesting. My only complaints is that I wish the other endings besides the true ending had more to them, and that some of the puzzles feel like their a little too cryptic. I even had to look up two of the puzzles solutions. But overall this is an amazing game, and it's free so you have no reason not to check it out.
I hate every character I've met so far, and there's nothing interesting about the combat, dialogue, or gameplay so far. so I'm gonna put this down
Blackout Hospital by arcadekitten is a narrative-driven indie RPG that uses a familiar top-down structure as a foundation for something far more character-focused and emotionally layered. Set almost entirely within a hospital plunged into darkness after a sudden blackout, the game places you in the role of Vasilis, a night-shift janitor whose routine quickly unravels into a strange and unsettling journey. What begins as a quiet exploration of a dimly lit building gradually transforms into a surreal experience filled with unusual encounters, symbolic moments, and an underlying sense of psychological tension. The gameplay blends exploration, light puzzle-solving, and turn-based combat, but these systems serve more as support for the story than as the primary attraction. Navigating the hospital involves moving through interconnected rooms, unlocking paths, and interacting with objects that often reveal pieces of the narrative or hints toward progression. The puzzles are generally straightforward but thoughtfully integrated, often requiring attention to environmental details or subtle clues. Combat exists as a secondary mechanic, providing occasional moments of tension, but it remains simple in execution and does not dominate the experience. Instead, it acts as a pacing tool, breaking up exploration without overshadowing the narrative focus. What truly defines Blackout Hospital is its writing and character work. Vasilis is not a passive protagonist but a fully realized character with their own voice, reactions, and perspective. Their internal dialogue and interactions with others shape the tone of the game, giving it a sense of personality that stands out within the genre. The supporting cast is equally distinctive, with characters that range from unsettling to oddly endearing, each contributing to the overall atmosphere. Conversations often shift between humor and discomfort, creating a dynamic rhythm that keeps the narrative engaging and unpredictable. The tone of the game is one of its strongest elements, blending psychological horror with moments of absurdity and introspection. The hospital setting, illuminated only by emergency lighting, creates a constant sense of unease, but the game avoids relying solely on traditional horror tropes. Instead, it builds tension through ambiguity and contrast, presenting situations that are as emotionally complex as they are visually strange. Themes of identity, perception, and personal struggle are woven throughout the story, giving it a depth that extends beyond surface-level scares. Visually, the game uses a pixel-art style that is both simple and effective. The limited palette and lighting are used to great effect, emphasizing the oppressive atmosphere of the hospital while maintaining clarity for gameplay. Character designs, though minimalistic, convey a surprising amount of personality, and environmental details help bring the setting to life. The aesthetic may be familiar to those who have played other RPG Maker-style games, but it is executed with enough care to feel cohesive and purposeful. Sound design plays a crucial role in reinforcing the mood. Ambient noises, subtle musical cues, and occasional bursts of audio create a sense of tension that persists even during quieter moments. The lack of constant music allows the environment itself to feel more present, making the hospital seem empty yet alive in an unsettling way. This careful use of sound enhances immersion and complements the game’s overall tone. The pacing is steady and deliberate, with the game unfolding over several hours in a way that allows its themes and characters to develop naturally. Multiple endings add an extra layer of depth, encouraging players to explore different choices and paths. While the core experience is relatively contained, the branching outcomes provide a reason to revisit the story and uncover additional details. There are some limitations, particularly in the mechanical aspects. The combat system is functional but lacks depth, and players looking for complex gameplay systems may find it somewhat basic. At times, progression can feel uneven, especially when puzzle solutions are not immediately clear. Additionally, the structure and presentation may feel familiar to those well-acquainted with RPG Maker titles, which can reduce the sense of novelty in its design. Despite these drawbacks, Blackout Hospital succeeds in delivering a memorable and distinctive experience that prioritizes storytelling and atmosphere over mechanical complexity. It stands out through its strong character writing, unique tone, and willingness to explore themes that are both personal and thought-provoking. For players who value narrative depth and are open to a more introspective and unconventional approach, it offers a compelling journey that lingers long after it ends. Rating: 8/10
