Warning: AI Slop This game is partially or completely made with talentless, soulless AI generated content.
"Black Myth: Heaven" sure looks like a real game, doesn't it? Nope. It'll spin your GPU up to 100% (doing something perfectly fine with your GPU I'm sure) while the developer waits for you to buy the "NFT" Steam Marketplace "apples" he created for OVER THIRTY BUCKS. And the game itself? A nasty, contentless selection of Unreal assets and AI Slop. And who could have guessed, the game itself? Minimum viable product. This is all just a weird cash grab and should be avoided by all. It's definitely not free. What do you do in the game? It's just a garbage top down brawler/RPG template with no meaningful content of any quality. As mentioned, this features really godawful, "wrong" looking AI slop and flipped stock assets instead of genuinely and sincerely created game assets. It's unclear if any of the game assets at all were created by the developer, in fact. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating real game assets or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks bad because of that decision. AI slop sticks out like a sore thumb... and it comes across as insulting. There's also the old adage that those who lack the budget and talent to make their own game assets usually lack the budget and talent to do the rest of the job of game development properly, too, and that's glaringly obvious here. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. So, no content, flipped an AI slop assets... this is really at the bottom of the barrel. It's hard to describe this as even remotely ethical or genuine. And just look at the name... was the developer really hoping people would confuse this with Black Myth: Wukong? That kind of thing really is not okay, but you can see a pattern here. This is only superficially free. The real purpose for this game is for the developer to farm and exploit Steam Inventory items that drop through the game. They can then sell these items in bulk on the Steam Community Marketplace. This kind of Steam abuse, combined with a minimum-viable-product non-game, does no service to gamers whatsoever. This is pollution... it's harmful to everyone. It hurts genuine indie devs, who have to compete with this pollution to get visibility for their sincerely made games. It makes indie devs look bad. It makes it harder for gamers to find those genuinely made games. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at less than 100 concurrent players, they couldn't even break three figures, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.
