Probably one of the best sandbox games I've played in a long time. Kudos to the developer for the effort put into this game. This game should be played without any form of AI assistance or wikis for the most amount of satisfaction.
Hello! I'm not a coder.
Bitburner stands as one of the most unconventional titles on Steam, offering an experience that feels equal parts game, coding sandbox, and cyberpunk simulator. Developed by Fulcrum Games, Hydroflame, and a large community of open-source contributors, with publishing handled by Fulcrum Games, the title invites players into a futuristic world where knowledge is the ultimate currency. Instead of relying on combat, exploration, or cinematic storytelling, Bitburner challenges players to think like programmers and problem-solvers, turning lines of code into the primary tool for progression. It is an ambitious concept that succeeds largely because it fully commits to its identity. At its core, Bitburner is a hacking and incremental RPG set in a dystopian future. Players begin with modest abilities, gradually learning how to infiltrate servers, earn money, and expand their influence across a digital landscape. However, what initially appears to be a simple hacking simulator quickly reveals itself as something far more expansive. The game incorporates faction systems, city exploration, character augmentation, corporate management, stock market manipulation, and countless opportunities for automation. Every accomplishment unlocks another layer of complexity, creating a satisfying sense of discovery that keeps players invested for dozens, if not hundreds, of hours. The game's defining feature is its use of actual JavaScript programming. Rather than simplifying coding into abstract mechanics, Bitburner encourages players to write scripts that perform meaningful actions in-game. Simple programs can automate repetitive tasks, while advanced scripts can become highly efficient systems that manage entire operations with minimal input. This approach gives the experience remarkable depth. Newcomers can learn programming fundamentals organically, while experienced coders can treat the game as a playground for experimentation. The integrated coding tools feel surprisingly robust, reinforcing the illusion that players are operating within a genuine hacker's workstation. Another major strength is the sheer amount of content packed into what is essentially a free title. The game features over one hundred augmentations that alter progression and encourage experimentation. There are coding contracts that function as puzzles, numerous factions to align with, and systems that reward strategic planning. Bitburner excels at making progression feel meaningful, as each milestone opens new possibilities instead of simply increasing numerical values. Its incremental design creates a constant feedback loop of improvement that remains compelling long after the opening hours. That said, Bitburner is not without its limitations. Its presentation is intentionally minimalist, relying heavily on text, menus, and terminal interfaces. Players expecting flashy graphics or traditional gameplay loops may find the experience difficult to embrace. Likewise, while prior coding experience is unnecessary, an interest in learning and experimentation is practically essential. The game can occasionally feel overwhelming, especially once multiple mechanics begin overlapping. There are moments where debugging a script or reading documentation becomes the primary activity, which may not appeal to everyone. Despite its niche appeal, Bitburner benefits enormously from its passionate community. The open-source nature of the project has allowed it to evolve continuously, with hundreds of contributors helping refine and expand the game over time. Community guides, tutorials, and discussions make it easier for new players to overcome early hurdles, while veterans continue to push the game's systems in creative ways. This collaborative ecosystem gives Bitburner a longevity that many premium titles struggle to achieve. Ultimately, Bitburner is less about hacking and more about empowerment through knowledge. It transforms programming concepts into meaningful gameplay mechanics and rewards curiosity at every turn. Few games are willing to trust players with this level of complexity, and even fewer manage to make it enjoyable. While its text-heavy interface and steep learning curve will naturally limit its audience, those willing to engage with its systems will discover one of the most unique and rewarding experiences available on Steam.
