Bitburner is a free programming based incremental RPG where we play as a hacker in a dark cyberpunk world. Instead of doing everything through normal menus, we can write JavaScript scripts that actually control parts of the game. We can hack servers, make money, improve our skills and slowly build up a much stronger setup. The best thing about Bitburner is easily the programming. We can write scripts to automate hacking, manage servers and handle jobs that would normally take a lot of manual work. It feels really good when we write something ourselves and then watch it run properly in the background. There is also a surprising amount of freedom in how we progress. We can hack different servers, train our stats, join factions, work different jobs and explore the game's other systems. We can also trade on the stock market and write scripts to automate trading, which gives us another completely different way to make money. The progression gets much bigger as we go further. There are more than 100 Augmentations, permanent upgrades, different companies and locations, programming challenges and various other mechanics to unlock. The game keeps giving us new systems to experiment with instead of stopping once we understand the basic hacking loop. The fact that we can actually learn programming while playing is another big positive. We do not need to know JavaScript before starting, but having some basic knowledge definitely makes things easier. Writing better scripts becomes part of the gameplay itself, rather than just being something added on the side. The biggest problem is the learning curve. Bitburner can be really confusing when we first start because there are so many systems, commands and mechanics to understand. The game gives us a lot of freedom, but sometimes it feels like we are being thrown into a huge toolbox without being told which tools we should use first. The presentation is also very basic. Most of the game is menus, text and numbers, so there is not much here visually. That is not really a problem when we are writing scripts and planning what to do, but it does mean the game depends almost entirely on whether we enjoy its systems. The incremental parts can also become repetitive once we have automated most of the basic work. Overall, Bitburner is one of the most interesting free incremental games because the programming is actually part of the game instead of just a gimmick. There is a huge amount of depth, loads of different systems and plenty of freedom in how we approach things. The complicated start and basic presentation hold it back from being perfect, but once we understand how everything works, there is a ridiculous amount to get into. Rating: 7.6/10
