I have punched enough criminals in Gotham to last a lifetime. After three Arkham games, the combat system that completely revolutionized superhero games started to lose some of its magic for me and honestly the surface level gameplay overall started to drag. The famous freeflow combat is still incredibly polished, but by the time I reached Batman: Arkham Knight, the punch, counter, punch, counter rhythm was something I had already experienced hundreds of times. And honestly? I did not care all to much. Because Arkham Knight is not a game I kept playing because I wanted to master another combat encounter. I kept playing because obviously no game has ever captured the feeling of being Batman this well. The moment you step into Gotham, the game immediately reminds you why Rocksteady's Arkham series became so legendary. The atmosphere is unbelievable. The rain pouring down skyscrapers. The neon lights reflecting off the streets. The thunder in the distance. Gotham feels like a living, breathing city that somehow still looks better than many modern releases. This game came out years ago and is still sprinting circles around games released today visually. But the best part is simply existing in this world. Standing on the edge of a building. Looking over Gotham. jumping off. Opening Batman's cape. Watching the rain fly off your suit as you glide through the city. It is one of those gaming experiences where real life responsibilities start creeping in and telling you to shut the game off, but your brain responds with: "Okay, but what if I just glide around Gotham for another ten minutes and find a cool side mission?" And suddenly another hour disappears. This Batman fantasy and world are that powerful. The story was what kept me invested this time around. By this point in the series, I was much more interested in seeing where this version of Batman's story would go rather than simply beating up another group of criminals. The Arkham Knight mystery was handled extremely well, and the reveal of who was behind the mask added a much more personal layer to Batman's final chapter. This was not just another villain trying to destroy Gotham. This was Batman being forced to confront his own past and the consequences of everything he has carried with him. Scarecrow was also one of the strongest parts of the entire game. His presence is felt constantly. He is not just a villain waiting at the end of the story. He hangs over Gotham like a nightmare. The fear toxin, the destruction of the city, and the psychological warfare make him feel like one of the few villains who can actually challenge Batman in a way beyond just physical strength. For once, Batman is not just fighting crime. He is fighting fear itself. My biggest problem with Arkham Knight is the stealth sections. The predator gameplay is one of the coolest ideas in the entire series. The feeling of being hunted by Batman from the shadows is something that no other superhero game has ever replicated. But on the hardest difficulty, especially later in the game, these encounters started becoming more frustrating than fun. What begins as this incredible power fantasy slowly turns into me sitting in a corner waiting for the perfect opportunity because one mistake means restarting the entire encounter. Eventually, I stopped feeling like Batman stalking his prey and started feeling like Batman waiting for everyone to stop moving so I could finally hug them from behind into submission. Despite those frustrations, Arkham Knight still achieves what it sets out to do. It makes you forget about the mechanics and completely buy into the fantasy. I can complain about the combat. I can complain about the stealth. I can complain about certain design choices. I can definitely complain on the over reliance on the batmobile tank combat. Then five minutes later I am standing on top of a building, rain pouring down around me, looking over Gotham City and remembering exactly why this game is special. This is the Batman simulator. The Gotham simulator. The "I should probably go to sleep but one more glide around the city won't hurt" simulator. Batman: Arkham Knight is not perfect, but it does something almost impossible. It makes you feel like the world's greatest detective, the world's greatest fighter, and a man carrying the weight of an entire city on his shoulders. Rocksteady did not just make a superhero game. They made the license to being Batman.

Batman Arkham Knight is the final chapter of Rocksteady's acclaimed trilogy, bringing a fully drivable Batmobile and an expansive, open-world Gotham City to the franchise. Pros * Visually stunning open-world Gotham City that still holds up as one of the best-looking games on Steam. * Perfected Free-Flow combat and stealth mechanics, introducing satisfying multi-takedowns and dual-character combat transitions. * Highly compelling main storyline featuring incredible performances from Kevin Conroy as Batman and John Noble as Scarecrow. * Packed with a massive amount of side content, including deep criminal case files and expansive DLC stories. * Features the largest roster of playable allies and iconic villains in the series, letting you swap characters mid-fight unlike previous games including: Robin, Nightwing, Oracle, Alfred Pennyworth, Commissioner James Gordon, Lucius Fox, Catwoman, Azrael, Arkham Knight, Jason Todd, Red Hood, Scarecrow, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, Penguin, The Riddler, Poison Ivy, Firefly, Man-Bat, Kirk Langstrom, Francine Langstrom, Hush, Deathstroke, Professor Pyg, Deacon Joseph Blackfire, Jack Ryder, Aaron Cash, Simon Stagg, Henry Adams, Christina Bell, Johnny Charisma, Albert King, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, Nora Fries, Ra's al Ghul, Nyssa Raatko, Mad Hatter, Black Mask, Calendar Man, Sefton Hill, Vicki Vale, Lex Luthor, Officer Owens Cons * Heavy reliance on the Batmobile, with mandatory tank combat sections that can feel repetitive and disruptive to the core gameplay rhythm. * PC version has a history of performance optimization issues, though most major game-breaking bugs have since been patched. * Overabundance of Riddler trophies and puzzles required to unlock the true, complete ending of the game. * The identity of the titular Arkham Knight villain is highly predictable for fans familiar with Batman lore. [8, 9, 10] While the forced vehicle combat remains a polarizing design choice, it is widely considered a masterpiece in mechanical design and a fitting conclusion to the trilogy.

Really fun Batmobile driving sim, it's a shame they decided to tack on all those "on-foot" missions but thankfully most of them are optional
