Alright. Basements n’ Basilisks: Storms of Sorcery is done and dusted. This is the VN version of a tabletop gaming session, and it’s dead on accurate. If you’ve ever played something like AD&D, you’ve witnessed this for yourself. And that is the true beauty of this game. It’s funny, but also completely relatable. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3171976418 Ultimately, there isn’t too much to the story. You’re a new member of an established RPG group playing through a Basements n’ Basilisks (D&D) side adventure. A lot of the game focuses on the players and DM (BM in this game) bickering over decisions, rules, story continuity….you know…standard tabletop fare. As the newb, you are functionally the tie breaker for all relevant in game decisions. As you work your way through this side campaign. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3171976527 It’s really a charming game that’ll have you chuckling, and you can play through it in less than an hour, although for completionists, you’ll likely need a couple playthroughs to see and do everything. There is of course a fair amount of meta humor, fun direct tropes to silly stuff like how NPCs are named. It’s completely Steam Deck compatible, and I think my playthrough used like 15%ish of my battery. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3171976735 To me, and based on my interests, three bucks feels like good cost vs value, but the game does also go on sale here and there. I thought it was fun and a nice way to reminisce about the days when I used to play in tabletop groups. The bulk of the game may be scripted and possesses only a few RP mechanics, but these are used to good effect to underpin the re-enactment. While it has virtually no issues, it has only a minimum of replay value. Made for anyone who has role-played before with an itch for nostalgia, BnB:SoS is at best a MAYBE purchase for the right person

STATUS: Fully released, is polished and has received a few light patches for bug-fixing in the past

APPEAL: This should appeal to roleplayers of TTRPGs in the past, looking for a simple, nostalgic, yet somewhat humourous experience

VALUE: Full price is cheap and very indicative of the content. Part Table-Top RPG (TTRPG) re-enactment and part parody in a fairly unique combination. The fact that its wrapped within an adventure styled visual novel means minimal role-playing possibilities, as the player can only navigate the basic adventure with the help of scripted companions. ► GAMELOOP is rather long, but very shallow. Essentially driven by the story through scripted dialogue interactions between party members and dungeon-master. Underpinning this are some minor RP mechanics used at key events. ► Much of the game consists of reading DIALOGUE between the dungeon master and the group of role-players. Most are recognisable sequences of banter, with some puns thrown in occasionally. The sort of tongue-in-cheek exchanges one might find when roleplaying with other people. ► Though there is no CAMPAIGN as such, the single ADVENTURE is mildly interesting and is built to be replayed due to a number of journey branches and a selection of multiple action choices made along the way. However, replays will be likely be a 're-lived' experience. ► The make believe GAMEWORLD probably couldn't be taken from any of the sessions I used to play, but comes a close approximation to an average Dungeons & Dragons RPG session. Enough differences to make it stand out, while also reinforcing the parody. ► STORY-telling is mildly interesting, yet thankfully on the lite side. ► WRITING is the undoubted star of the show and does its utmost to the generate a credible experience while presenting some genuinely funny moments. Some of which should at least pinch the nostalgia nerve for those of us who have role-played in the past. ► With no CHARACTER CUSTOMISATION the same fighter is played over and over by the player. Stats are pre-rolled. ► COMPANIONS and the DUNGEON MASTER may be scripted, but are brought to life by the writing which does a fair job of creating identifiable personas. More over scripted dialogue gives credence to the on-going re-enactment, but also generates almost all of the parody that's on offer. A supporting cast of NPCs does a fair job of convincing the player this is a lived in world. ► A tiny amount of ROLEPLAYING mechanics underpin the role-playing adventure, adding to the overall TTRPG feel. The die rolls are generous. Results are compared to a fairly standard set of character stats when required, there is no sustained fighting in the game. Nor is there any loot to collect. ► AUDIOVISUALS are basic, but of a consistent quality throughout. Visuals provide a basic approximation of what a TTRPG should look like. The artwork is artistic with clean lines and colours. There are some pleasant visual effects to add to the drama of certain situations. The multi-soundtrack is full of tracks that standout and are used to good effect as the journey unwinds. If only there were voice-overs for the dialogue. Perhaps a bridge to far given the game's likely budget. ► CONTROLS are simple mouse-driven, point and click. No issues experienced during play. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3225341993
COMPLEXITY:
🔶 ACCESSIBILITY - Basic in concept and execution, it should pose no problem for anyone to play. 🔶 DIFFICULTY - Does not have one. 🔶 BALANCE - Does not need it. 🔶 PACING - Pretty good. While the dialogue can feel heavy, overall its packaged into good sized chunks that allows players to retain interest. 🔶 SCALING - Not needed here.
STAYING POWER:
🟨 REPLAY VALUE - A number of branched routes and alternate action choices allow for a little replayability. At least until all routes have been taken and all dialogue read. 🟨 LONGEVITY - Apart from replaying a few times and getting 100% achievements, there is not much more.
PRODUCTION:
🟣 QUALITY - Well polished with no discernible issues. 🟣 STABILITY - No problems experienced. 🟣 STEAM - Achievements designed for at least one more replay. Cloud saving. Screenshot capture. Unknown controller support. 🟣 OPTIMISATION - Runs at 60 FPS throughout, only dropping a few frames during transitions to the map. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3225345183

REVIEWED WITH: Build v1.2.1(11) INTEL i5 6600 3.3GHz, 8GB RAM, GTX970 @ 1GB 1920x1080 fullscreen/windowed, EVO850 SSD, Speedlink XEOX Pro Analog Gamepad

Click for:
More Screenshots

Thank you for reading | Click to follow my curator THE IRREGULAR GAMER
One day, when a maiden was out on her nightly stroll She got lost in the forest and was set on by a gnoll When in there stepped a gentleman, moustachioed and tall He was no help at all, 'cause he's three kobolds in a trenchcoat Chase Noseworthy – Three Kobolds in A Trenchcoat
Brilliant parody of a game night with good old pen&paper DnD, I love it! It's quite short but not pricey, so that checks out. I can wholeheartedly recommend it!
A little too short, with limited choices available to you during game play. To be completely fair- it's a very accurate parody of a normal D&D game, right down to that One Player. So props to them for that.
Short TTRPG story. I like the concept, but did not care for the actual game. It's very short, some choices led to completely off-the-wall actions, and the use of (TM) after every made up proper noun (which I assume it meant to be funny) was tedious. Overall rating is "meh", but since Steam requires thumbs up or down I'll go with down.
Heh, it's short but hilarious.
This game was actually quite fun. It's a visual novel about a group of friends playing a DnD-style TTRPG. You play as a newbie who joins a campaign mid-game, taking on the role of a predefined human fighter character. Gameplay mostly involves reading the story and making choices that influence story and exploration. Various sound effects nicely complement the storytelling, and the game makes heavy use of fourth wall breaks. However, it would have greatly benefited from voice-overs. Hearing the friends banter out loud would have been hilarious. Sadly, the game is very short. While playing and looking at the in-game map, I expected a longer game with more locations to explore. Instead, it felt more like a demo or the first chapter of a larger story. The open ending left me a bit disappointed. I would have loved to play more. A single playthrough takes just over an hour. The game offers some replayability if you want to explore all possible paths and dialogue choices, see both endings and unlock every achievement.
A quirky little indie that takes a cheeky swipe at the world of TTRPG gaming by presenting a plausible experience of your average social dynamic during a session of D&D. And they direct some thinly-veiled, smirk-inducing sarcasm towards Wizards of the Coast. Anyway, the premise doesn't sound like much, but the writing is great and they pull off some good humour because they don't try too hard. It's a different experience and worth the money. And a sequel.
Прикольная визуальная новелла в сеттинге ДнД, рекомендую
