This game is a roguelite version of Arkanoid (or whatever other name the classic brick-breaking game might be known as) where the bricks are monsters and the player destroys them by throwing balls at them. The "roguelite" element consists of picking up new balls and passive abilities during a stage, as well as unlocking new balls and other power-ups while outside stages: this is done by building a town where each building grants either an upgrade (like the number of balls the player can hold) or a new character to play as. Characters also have personal abilities that will influence the gameplay: some launch balls in different ways, some launch multiple balls at once, some play the game by themselves and one even changes the game to be turn-based (so it effectively becomes a roguelite reimagining of Puzzle Bobble/Bust a Move). That's not even counting that both balls and characters can be combined: two balls can be fused together into a single one that has the properties of both, and some can even spawn brand new balls like how the "iron" ball and the "fire" ball can evolve into a "bomb" ball. Characters behave the same and bring both their unique abilities to a stage. I've played the entirety of this game on a Steam Deck OLED with no issues whatsoever outside of one stage where I tested a spammy combination of balls and characters and the screen got very busy. Aside from that, I've had an extremely smooth experience and completed every achievement after around 42-43 hours, though I'd argue one may need even less than that. There are plenty of combinations possible, and I think the game is both well-made and unique enough to warrant a try. It has a demo, too, and I encourage trying it out first, but the game is a clear thumbs-up for me.
I understand that "it's not a game for me" is probably not going to be a very convincing review. However, I have been convinced by games in genres I couldn't stand before playing them. Grim Dawn is a perfect example of that, as I absolutely despised aRPGs before buying that game for the lols. Now I own all 4 DLCs of it with 400+ hours in, and double dipped in the same way for my partner so that we could play together in the future. In other words I try to keep an open mind. BALL x PIT from the get go just doesn't feel good to play for me. It's just way too clunky. Hence it failed the famous concept of a 30 second game loop, at least for me. I suggest you try it out to see for yourself, but I just can't recommend it from where I stand.
I just wanted to rearrange my base not thinking they had to be built again. man this sucks....
Balls, nice
Probably best roguelike experience i've had.
It's fun at first and a little after, then becomes a bore fest. You'll get your money worth but only that.
Truley a Masterpiece. The buildup is amazing. After every level completion you make some small but meaningful progress. New mechanics are introduced every now and then to keep things interesting. Simple but rewarding gameplay (if you like twin stick shooters). Thanks to the ball fusion you play the same maps over and over it does not feel repetitive. Dopamine kick addiction inducing at its finest.
惊为天人的设计
I think theres two things that would have made the game perfect for me, but they would have been tricky to do. #1 every call has an evolution, this would just have just added more depth and less groan when you get the heart balls or time balls #2 if there was some end game goal for the farm, because otherwise once you compleate everything before ng+ the farm looses meaning (maybe after you win your stuck down in the hole and need to come up?) I still obviusly enjoyed the game (sound design really stude out to me in both music and sfx), put 71 hours in, don't recomend if you are ocd about achivments or easily addicted to games (unless you dont mind loosing 71 hours)
