Great game with the classic Castlevania feel. Has some great tunes to hum along to
If you like classic Castlevania than this is for you.
If you liked NES Castlevania, you'll like this. It's pretty great, feels familiar but has a new sub-weapon or two and some interesting, somewhat more ambitious boss battles. Very hard! The jumping, attack and stair climbing actions are basically identical to the classic, and therefore the platforming and combat timing can be very tricky. The graphic style is chunky, colorful and generally pleasing, and appropriate for the throwback style of gameplay they are going for here. Also the price is not bad, especially with 25% off of that at the moment. Good game for fans of the OG.
What can I say that hasn't already been said? If you enjoy Classic-vanias, then you're gonna enjoy this. The level and enemy designs breathe life into a long dormant genre. Casual mode is a fun option for inexperienced players. The difficulty's fair on normal mode and it adds a lot of replay value and challenge with expert mode. Soundtrack is anything but BASIC and will keep your head nodding throughout. It may not be recommended for those who shy away from a retro-inspired challenge, but I truly believe if you give this game a shot you will not be disappointed. Plus it's truly an amazing value at it's current price so pick it up right now!!! There's always hope for a sequel!
Addicting, 8-bit, side scrolling goodness 10/10
"Awakened Evil" is an enjoyable linear 2D platformer that fans of the classic Castlevania games (and platformers in general) would enjoy. The game offers 6 levels full of spooky monsters, hazards, jumping challenges and of course, big bad bosses at the end. Your main weapon is a sword but you can also use ranged weapons (guns. molotov, pistol, axe and a boomerang-like cross) as long as you are carrying enough manna. The controls are reminiscent of the old Castlevania games in that the player feels "heavy" and "slow" but ultimately, it's something that you'll get used to eventually. The art style utilizes simple pixel graphics but has a 3D feel. What I mean is that the walls and floors have been extruded a bit to create the illusion of depth and perspective, which I think is an interesting visual effect. The midi sounding music and SFX are also quite nice. I'd describe the game's difficulty as challenging but fair. Overall, "Awakened Evil" makes for a very nostalgic platformer experience. Recommended to fans of the classics.
Fun game, I can beat every Castlevania deathless in like 5 minutes. This took way longer than that. Just joshing. But for real, rather difficult on expert mode with new sections to stages. Feels just like the classic vania, but with cool new sub-weapons and scenarios. Tons of reasons to replay. Speed runners submit runs and make it snappy.
If you long for games where you fight for the right to move to the right (or left) with a bangin' soundtrack and a difficulty that keeps you coming back for more, look no further. Get on the hype train of this future classic
Very fun retro platformer!
It's a good game for its price, but its also a good example of why games aren't made like this any more. There are a bunch of little frustrations you'll run into, like falling through stairs if you try to jump on them, instant death if you fall off the screen even though there is a platform off screen that you'd land on, no forward momentum if you walk off a ledge, and levels designed in a way that the most frequent way you'll die is getting knocked off platforms any time you take damage. I don't want to leave a negative review, because it's well-made for what it is, but people should be aware that this isn't just a retro-inspired game, it's basically an old NES game full-stop, deliberately including frustrating mechanics that game designers learned from and stopped doing almost 30 years ago.
