aurora hex is similar to the developer's previous game, aurorabound deluxe. you're trying to recreate colorful patterns in both, but in this game you're bothering hexagons instead of squares. it is also somewhat similar to loop. there are 20 worlds (level sets) with 30 levels each (except the first, which only has 20), so about 600 puzzles to begin with. the mouse moves pieces around and placed hexes can be rotated with left/right clicks. there is no timer and you can use as many hints as you want, as long as you have them. completing each level gives you one, it unlocks the next level, hands out some crowns that are just points for a scrapped leaderboard feature that may or may not return later, and a star. stars are used to unlock worlds, and while you can only have one unsolved puzzle in a world, if you stack up stars, you can unlock multiple worlds and hop around between them. not sure why they're called worlds, my theory is because levels look like top-down views of some random landscape. well, not so much the pink areas, but I can picture mountains, hills, forests, villages and such. the game claims to have a gradual difficulty curve, and I guess it's pretty good, as I didn't encounter many difficulty spikes, but levels get more colorful and bigger, and take longer and longer to complete. the entire game is really relaxing, but some levels without any pre-placed or fixed pieces, so with many possible combinations can be frustrating, or when everything's rotatable and the pattern's not that obvious. if you do decide to hop around level packs, progress is saved if you quit a level, which is always nice. so is an undo function in puzzlers, but there is none here. the way the game works it's not necessary though, you can move and rotate pieces around to your heart's content, even put pieces back to the foundation and reorganize them there, so having a level reset is enough. after completing 100 puzzles, dailies open up, 4 per day, varying difficulty, and they also give stars, hints and of course crowns. after 500 puzzles (which means completing most of the worlds depending on how many dailies you do) infinity mode unlocks, which is what the name suggests. I'm not a fan of endless procedurally generated content, but not against games having them for longevity either. as for the technical aspects, separate volume sliders, resolution options, windowed mode are all here and work flawlessly, very clean and elegant presentation, though the music is more for ambience than actual listening, but it doesn't get in the way at least. sound effects aren't excellent, but you won't be playing this with the game's audio for too long anyway. can't really find a fault with the game, except using a hint sometimes replaces a piece with an identical piece in the same slot, which was technically correct already. the price is reasonable, there's a lot of content, it can definitely keep you busy for a long time, so consider picking it up.

A really nice pattern solving puzzle game with 590 standard levels, 4 daily puzzles each day and infinite mode so you never run out of puzzles to solve even if you finish all the standard and daily ones. The only 2 issues I have with the game would be: - the UI can be a bit buggy sometimes (a handful of times I have somehow managed to select multiple pieces at once and the text when you finish a level in the infinite mode is broken) - the hint system leaves a lot to be desired as it will a lot of the time just switch 2 of the same looking pieces that were in the correct spots. But I have played 2000 levels and I still have hundreds of hints left over so it is not really that much of an issue although would be ideal if fixed. Neither of them are serious issues and have not taken away from my enjoyment of the game, or I wouldn't have played 65 hours of it just to get the 100%. Works without issues on Linux with Proton (7.0-4, 7.0-5 and whatever was the default one back in August 2019).
Visually pleasing minimalist puzzler. Almost same genre as jigsaw puzzles, but feels different. UI & Visuals seem a bit more refined than the first title, while retaining a similar feel to play. :) (Currently up to late World 1, out of 20 worlds, at time of review. Also has Daily puzzles to unlock & Infinity mode to unlock)
In short: Aurora Hex is a lovely casual puzzle game about completing colour patterns on a hex grid by placing or rotating tiles. While the UI and presentation leave a lot to be desired, the basic gameplay is very solid and content is functionally infinite with the level generator and daily levels. The stand-alone price is a steal. Even more so as part of the bundle (though this game is by far the most enjoyable of the three). In long: The gameplay consists of placing or rotating hex tiles on a grid. Placement and rotation are mutually exclusive to each other and the only interactions the game offers. A tile may have up to 3 colours and the goal is to fill the grid in a way that only same-colour edges are next to each other. This is not really a game of hard logic or foced moves and the easiest way to solve most levels is to recognize and follow the over-all visual pattern which tend to fall into 3 broad archetypes (web, spiral, lines). Completing a level earns you a hint, which you can use to have a tile placed for you if you ever get stuck (which should only happen rarely at the very start of mosty-empty boards). The content is functionally limitless due to the included level generator. 600 levels with a fairly spotty difficulty curve are pre-made and have to be worked through in sequence (no skipping ahead). Each day you get 4 (locally) generated levels in different sizes in the "Daily Puzzles" section. Or you can just use Infinity Mode. This level generator sadly offers no settings, but by-and-large produces pretty approachable and fun big levels. In my review of Aurora Bound Deluxe, the square-based predecessor, I've expressed some frustration with the poor level generation. Aurora Hex is much improved in this regard, though partly due to just having fewer degrees of freedom with hexagonal tiles than with squares. You will still occasionally hit a huge empty board with no idea what a pattern might look like, but they are rare enough that even spending 5-10 hints on such boards will leave you with an ever increasing stockpile of hints (completely unlike Aurora Bound). It took me 60 hours to complete all achievements - the most time-consuming wanting 2000 levels solved (which means you need 1400 dailies or infinity levels on top of the 600 pre-made). But I find myself still coming back regularly. It's a very nice meditative time-waster. Have 10 minutes to spare? Just quickly do the 4 daily levels and feel good about yourself. The UI is over-all fairly good, though rather ugly (especially compared to the stylish Aurora Bound). I've you've played Line Loops from the same developer, it's basically a carbon copy. Color-blind support with small symbols denoting colors is still present. The victory animation is a tad bit too long if you just want to blast through some levels, though at least the victory UI is relegated to the lower third of the screen, which allows you to admire your finished pattern (unlike Aurora Bound). The victory sound effect is unfortunately still a jarring fanfare that is very dissonant with the meditative style of the game and its subtle ambient background music. Controls feel good (none of the missed placements or accidental tileswaps I frequently had with Aurora Bound). There are some weird and largely useless "currencies" or scoring systems with stars, crowns, and hints, all of which I could honestly do without (the developer has commented that crowns belong to a scrapped leaderboard feature). Some of the bigger levels could definitely do with a zoom funcationality (there is none) and depending on the (randomized) background sometimes empty spots and holes in the grid can look confusingly similar. For the technical aspects the options are exemplary and leave nothing to be desired. The graphical settings are excellent (resolution drop down, fullscreen toggle, texture quality, anti-aliasing). Music and sfx volumes can be adjusted via seperate sliders. There is a weird roll-back bug in Infinity Mode (example: if you half-way complete lvl 55, next session you will start on a newly generated lvl 54 and after solving that continue with your half-solved lvl 55 from the previous session), but apart from that I've never had any problems, bugs, or crashes. In conclusion this game will not challenge you or impress you with shiny visuals. But what it does have, more than its cousins Aurora Bound and Line Loops, is rock-solid enjoyable infinite gameplay. And that matters so much more than looking better (Aurora Bound) or being more clever (Line Loops). This game seems primitive in comparison (and perhaps it is), but I just really *really* enjoy it for what it is - a casual time-waster about assembling patterns with tiles. Easily worth buying at full price. Nothing wrong with picking up the bundle either, though Aurora Hex turned out to be by far the most enjoyable game of the bundle for me.
Einfach mal wieder was verrücktes machen. Etwas neues, anderes.
Very satisfying puzzles.
