This is developed by Artii Games LLC, who produced their first title TimeTekker which was already a blast, and this only expands on the good and fun gameplay with longer and more dynamic runs. The game is not perfect, but the developer is always interested in improving in what ways he can, and has already made quite a few changes, both in-game and quality-of-life, based on proffered suggestions. He is very active in the community forums and is dedicated to making this game as good as the players wish for. The set base price of $2.99 USD is very fair. Quick thing to note is that the game still lacks controller support at this time and can only be played with Keyboard and Mouse.
Gameplay
AstroViking is an arena-survival game at its fundamental state. Fortunately your female Viking protagonist has unlimited ammo supply to ride out the arena wave after wave. By damaging and killing the enemies that come at you, she gains points, with which she can purchase upgrades throughout each run. There are no permanent upgrades in this game, which is good, as it gives everyone a shot at the leaderboards, be it a seasoned veteran or a first-time player. There are different types of enemies, off the top of my head, I can remember 5 different enemy types. Do not let this fool you, however, because these enemy types are really just the foundations for stronger, more powerful versions later. There are boss levels every 5 waves, and each boss level introduces new versions of those enemies you already know with new colorful upgrades. You will know you are facing a stronger enemy when you are seeing colors that you have not seen before. They can take more damage, shoot more and faster bullets at you. These boss levels also feature more enemies in general, so there is no doubt the game truly lives up to its bullet-hell tag. The global leaderboards* are in-game, and provides rankings to all of the players based on how many waves they are able to survive. In addition, just like in TimeTekker, the leaderboards here give you status ranking as well based on percentile of your score. These range from Champion, Diamond, etc. all of the way down to Styrofoam. (*You will be asked to choose a name for your AstroViking when you begin, and this is for the leaderboards, this name cannot be changed post hoc, and thus you have been warned.) The upgrades are divided into three different sections after your first tutorial/very cheap upgrade. these sections are: 1. Bullet upgrades in size, damage power, fire speed, etc to the left. 2. Movement upgrades in dash damage, cooldown, movement speed, etc down the middle. 3. Vortex upgrades in vortex damage, cooldown, duration, etc to the right. There are some high-ranking upgrades at the ends of these trees and you can venture down your own paths through progressive upgrades in order to fashion your run based on your own preferences for the Viking. Some of the more difficult to get upgrades cost a significant amount of points, and you often have to pick one or the other, or one among several. Your AstroViking has 4 hearts of health, along with the two above-mentioned abilities innately. The hearts are depleted half-heart at a time, so your run will end if you absorb 8 hits in one wave. I say one wave and not run is because you get a single heart heal after each wave, and you can purchase heals, one heart at a time, with the price ramping up throughout your run. In terms of gameplay/run time, I would allot at least 1/2 hour for your first try at the game, longer if possible, to familiarize yourself with the game and its upgrade system. After that, 1/2 hour is probably enough for an average run. So if you have played TimeTekker, you will know this is very different. This game is meant to be played one run at a time. You have to decide after each run whether to pursue one more. But that leaderboard really pushes you, eggs you on, and whispers in your ear, "One more! One more! One more!"
Controls
Mouse and Keyboard only at the moment (at Launch), with possible plans further add controller support. The current controls work very well, and there is really no hiccups, so I cannot complain. I prefer M+B for bullet-hell games like this myself anyway.
Graphics and Music
The graphics are excellent, very similar to TimeTekker, if you are curious, just take a look at the store page trailer, which is a pretty good representation. As for the music, it also has that same relaxed style as TimeTekker, but this applies only to the basic waves. The boss levels have music of a completely different tension altogether, to really let you know you have stepped in deep waters.
Audience
This game can be for everyone. Though if you do not like bullet-hell games, please watch the trailer first before diving in. However, that being said, I must tell you that the initial levels are quite straight forward, and enemy bullets are neither too fast nor too numerous, even for a casual player. It may be a bit difficult if you are looking to introduce a very young player to bullet-hell style games, but the beginning levels certainly would not be a problem, if someone could help them learn about the upgrades during the game as well. There really is nothing in this game that would preclude anyone who sees the game and really wants to play.
Pricing
Base asking price has been set to $2.99 USD and this is very fair. Given the well-designed nature and its replay value, I would say it's definitely worth the price.
Positives
+Excellent design +Responsive controls and mechanics +Colored variability of the enemies with increasing difficulty +Diverse upgrade system allowing for replayability +Fitting music +Cheap for amount of gameplay and enjoyment +Developer very friendly and responsive
Negatives
-Currently no controller support. This may matter to some.
Conclusion
AstroViking is a top-down, bullet-hell, arena-survival game in the arcade fashion with dynamic upgrade system that gives the player plenty of enjoyment and replay value. It is easy to pick up and very difficult to master. You may find yourself dying again and again on the same level, and the only way to move past it is to get better yourself. It has a very fair asking price and if you think you might want to try this, I would strongly encourage you to take the dive.
I received the product for free. Follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
AstroViking: ~~~~~~~~~ It has been written in many historical books that Vikings needed to die a glorious death (in combat) in order to reach the majestic hall of Valhalla located in Asgard, the world of Gods. Well, there is one little thing we haven’t been told about . . . before reaching Valhalla, the spirit of the dead Vikings rose into the sky, through the stratosphere, and found themselves stuck deep in space! That’s right. But that’s not all. The poor buggers had to fight against wave after wave of strange enemies, for as long as they could. You don’t believe me? Check out AstroViking! AstroViking is a top-down arcade shooter, developed and published by Artii Games LLC, where you control a Viking warrior who has to combat hordes of enemies for as long as possible. The game has two modes of play, which are Classic and Ragnarok. However, you must defeat at least 25 waves in the Classic mode to successfully unlock the Ragnarok mode. As you launch your first game, your Viking warrior will appear in the middle of the screen next to a blue rock. All you have to do is to click on the rock to activate each of the waves. Before doing so, you’ll notice four other larger rocks. These rocks are pretty important, as you can hide behind them during each wave to avoid being hit by enemies’ projectiles. While this is all well and good, the flip side is that if you are behind them, you won’t be able to shoot at your enemies! As you start a wave, four red holes will appear on the top, bottom, and both sides of the screen, from which enemies will surface randomly and the round will begin. Your Warrior will be equipped with magical powers on both of her hands; one hand will throw projectiles and the other hand will activate a vortex magical power. As you trigger it, all enemies will be pulled towards its centre for a few seconds, giving you the ability to shoot at them in one spot. The other ability that your warrior has is dashing. You can inflict damage to enemies when you dash through them, and most importantly, your character will be invisible for a few seconds. However, it will take several seconds for both the dashing and vortex to regenerate themselves before you can re-use them. As you hit and destroy enemies, you’ll earn points which you can use at the end of each wave by either buying back your health, or by spending them on the powerups and abilities tree for your dashing, firepower and vortex abilities. In terms of the enemies, there really are a few of them. What makes the game interesting is that each of the enemies has a different pattern in terms of shooting projectiles, and it will become hectic from the 10 waves onwards. The other point I like is that you have a boss fight (a larger combination of enemies) every 5 waves. Graphically, the game looks good. At this point in time, there is no control support, which is a bit of a letdown. The other thing I would like to mention is that it would be good to change the background every now and then - just to refresh it, in my opinion. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Nice graphics + Fun, addictive with good replay-ability + Good powerups and abilities trees + Leader board + Good price point Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - No achievements or trading cards as yet - Repetitive AstroViking is a fun, casual, top-down arcade shooter. Give it a shot for Valhalla’s sake! 6/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! Great Game probably worth more like $5. Mindless fun till you get tp level 16. When it starts to get hard only think I wish it had was a mouse indicator that you could customize with different colors. When your playing because the plain mouse is the only eye sore but everything else is beautiful the skill tree with trees on the bottom is classic with floating leaves look amazing. customizing the viking might be kool also. the skill tree when you open it i kinda wish it remembered if you zoomed out last time you were in it, The last and only tricky thing is the skill tree when upgrading you have a choice when it splits into 2 ways or the one time it splits into 4 you can pick two skills but I think a little more detection on that would be great. Love this game and there is a leader-board that I love but I don't like how when you tie with someone that has gotten to a level before you there is higher on the leader board not even a tie RIP. In conclusion I would recommend the game if you like challenging levels after a little long of a start up time and some classic skill tree building with a twist and lovely music them boss battles get me pumped up with these jams!
this is a top down bullet hell game. If you enjoy those types of games this is a great game to get into. Once you start getting into the double digit waves it starts to get challenging. It's a great time waster and worth the money highly recommend.
AstroViking is my second female protagonist rogue-like game for the day and it's a bullet hell shoot'em up. It's setting is a little weird in that you are a female Viking who appears to run around in space punching and shooting invading aliens. I wonder what lead to this cacophony of ideas? Doesn't matter as long as it's fun and....(drum roll).....it is! Pretty simple shooter fun but fun non the less. It does add to the simple shooter concept with a nice upgrade system. At the end of each round you can spend your score on upgrades to your female Viking from bullet enhancements to special power upgrades of which you have two. One is a forward dash that will damage enemies and the second is a vortex that will suck in the invaders and damage them with the right upgrades. As I said earlier it is a rogue-like in that you have insta-death, so the aim of the game is to beat your highest level. It has online leader boards where I am currently positioned as having made level 18, not too bad for a newbie! At the end of each round you are given one full heart of healing with your character having a total of four. If you need more you can also buy them at the end of each round but the price increases each time you buy one, so use this wisely. My only complaint was the music can get a little annoying and there is no way to turn it off or down individually. Basically it is a well made but simple shoot'em up that is priced very cheaply at $3 making it a nice little find and it's good for an hour or two of fun. I played it for just over an hour for the video but the recording messed up so I quickly played another round. You will see the game suddenly begin again at the 10 minute mark and I amazingly become really good at it, that's why. ;) The first 10 minutes were from my first time so I left them in because they show the tutorial. So take a look at the video to see some game play.... https://youtu.be/5wEtz8plK6Q Thanks for watching, please like, subscribe and comment.
