not worth 70 dollars
The intro was great, and the combat was fun at first, but the game quickly became repetitive and boring. I eventually started skipping the story because the dialogue just wasn't engaging. This was my first Assassin's Creed game, and I honestly expected a lot more. The ending was especially disappointing- it was basically just a cutscene with no real payoff. And don't even get me started on the mountains... constantly climbing them got old fast. Overall, I'd give it a 5/10
Worst AC game over. the two character game play is stupid especially since they force you to play in one character the entire first act and then the final boss at the end of the PROLOGUE is unbeatable unless you are into split second timed combos and technical ♥♥♥♥ which I am not. They also did away with the animal hunting and wildlife attacks that made the other games more engaging. The gameplay is repetitive and the map is boring as every region and every castle looks identical. There's also no falcon to help with the recon of areas and enemy camps. Ubisoft took the AC concept, threw it out of the window and tried to copy Sekiro and Ghosts of Tsunima. This is not a fun game and it is not a well designed game. Glad I got this on sale as this piece of ♥♥♥♥ is not worth paying full price for. I hope that Ubisoft is taking a massive hit in sales for releasing this garbage.
Literally forced myself to finish this game and all the DLCs. I tried to play it without any expectations, but I cannot recommend this game. At first, you may think, “Oh, there is totally different gameplay with the shinobi and samurai,” but everything feels clunky and boring, especially after level 30+. Both characters play kind of the same because of that annoying level upscaling. I beat the final DLC at around level 65, and that stupid enemy scaling to your level completely ruined the experience. Bosses can one-shot you, and some attacks that should be blockable after unlocking the combat block perk still cannot be blocked. Some shots and hits can even ignore walls and buildings. The sad part is that there is no really rewarding gameplay loop that makes you want to keep playing and become stronger. At some point, you realize that since enemies simply scale to your level, it is better to avoid most fights and focus only on key enemies. Exploration also gets very annoying. If you try to cover most points of interest on the map, you will quickly get tired of seeing copy-pasted trees, bushes, and rocks everywhere. There are also so many rocks that look climbable but cannot actually be climbed. Parkour feels very weird sometimes too. Your character can suddenly jump in the wrong direction or simply not go where you want. The story is super weird, especially in the DLCs, and the characters overall are not interesting at all, especially the samurai dude. The only cool thing is Japan and some of the locations. They look really good. I like Japan, by the way. Be aware and buy this game only with a huge discount.
Currently at 70/75 achievements. After looking into the remaining ones, I don't get why I have to spend another 60–70 hours repeating the same tedious grind from my first playthrough. It adds zero value to a second run. For example, why force players to reach level 80 and complete a level 100 Domain? The cap for both should have stayed at 60. Grinding 60 hours just to finish a 10-minute domain makes no sense, The same goes for upgrading the hideout to level 13 it makes no difference compared to level 9 since I easily finished the story and got all my resources anyway. It just feels like artificial padding to keep people playing even locking the dual katanas behind New Game+ feels pointless. It’s a shame, because previous Assassin's Creed games were great and didn't have achievement lists that dragged on like this. Achievement bloat aside, the game itself was good. I can't really complain too much since I got it at a 60% discount. For now, I'm moving on to Black Flag Resynced. I might return to finish the remaining achievements in the future, but I'm just not willing to drain myself right now by repeating everything I already did in a 100+ hour playthrough.
Unfortunately the game works only when it wants to actually work.
Back on release day I believed that my old setup was the culprit behind frequent menu crashes. The game froze my entire PC every second boot. Happens to old systems, right? No. The game does the same exact crashes now, and it turns out refresh rate of my monitor is too high for the game. Turning it down to 120 fps fixed the issues, until it didn't. Currently I can't boot up the game entirely, not even second time, even with 120HZ. The issue lies somewhere else and I am too tired to work that out. I give up. I won't finish it. I won't buy and play any other Assassin's Creed game.
So at time of writing I'm 113 hours in, I've beaten most of the game... TL:DR; just go play Ghost of Tsushima instead. It makes more sense, has a more compelling story and characters, better stealth mechanics, way better soundtrack an world design... It is what this game should have been and failed to be. To get into it... 1. The Characters. I'm not sure who Naoe is as a person. A few times she's spouted things that sounded like she's a downright anarchist and other times she's just a normal person, then she's a young girl, then she's a badass assassin... But not in a way that a real person contains multitudes, it feels like a dozen people wrote her and they all took a few scenes but no one shared notes. Ironically, Yasuke is by far the most compelling but I rarely play as him as, can I cannot stress this enough, this is an AC game and I come here to do sneaky kills. There are other people in the world, I'm sure, but aside from the udon guy I can't remember anything about any of them. 2. The music. I'm sure it's there, but you'll have to forgive me if I don't recognize a single theme or motif. How far they've fallen from AC2... I still listen to that score and while AC1 is a bit more vibes focused it still has a style and texture that this one doesn't. It's just... forgettable. It's like the worst parts of what Hollywood is doing with blockbusters. 3. The voice acting, at least for English, always sounds like people putting on accents. Like if you told me that most of the voice cast was just people they had around the office or that they went down to the local community drama group instead of hiring professionals I would not doubt you, it'd actually make sense. 4. The world design sucks. Remember when they said their goal was anything that stuck out by 1-2 inches would be a climbable surface? Well now you can look face first at a wall my fat ass could climb but Naoe? She doesn't feel like it. And even then that'd be fine if they were clear about marking what was and was not climbable but nope. You just kinda have to guess. Oh, and don't bother going overland, the game hates that. There's nothing to discover in the woods anyways. Just follow the paths. This game has a large map and 99% of it does nothing but make a pretty-ish background. Besides, the foliage is so dense that you can't see anything anyway, you randomly get blocked by tiny trees, slide down slopes that don't look too steep... The game explicitly does not want you doing anything off the well beaten path. Oh, and I said "pretty-ish" because I've never stopped and stared at the scenery in this game. I do that all the time, Ghost of Tsushima had me doing that every 5 seconds. This game? During the day it's muted and bland, golden hour is 3 seconds long, and at night it's almost impossible to see. I have a very nice high-color accurate monitor that's been calibrated. Still can't see ♥♥♥♥ without cranking the in-game brightness. 5. Naoe is useless in open combat. I know the idea is that Yasuke is the fighter and she's sneaky but even with her maxed out she struggles in any fight that isn't a boss fight. If the story drops me into an arena fight? I just die so it will. reset and I get to choose Yasuke because they clearly don't want you fighting with her. At all. Ever. 6. Open world means I wiped out more than a few "unknown organization" groups before I found out who they were. Hell I had one group I killed half of and one of the guys turned out to be the boss so I magically "spared" the other ones. I didn't want to spare them. But that ship had sailed. I could go on but you get the point. AC: Mirage was short and a bit rough but it told a story and they brought back a lot of the old mechanics that made it feel like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ assassin game. At this point AC games are off my auto-buy list. I'll finish this game because it's fine and despite my complaints it's still a reasonably solid game. But I do not recommend and definitely don't buy it for full price. Maybe like half price then it'd feel like a solid value. At full price? Go get Ghost of Tsushima. It is, in literally every way, a better game.
I miss when AC wasn't this RPG Witcher 3 clone. Ubisoft should've know 3 games ago that people are tired of the bloat and the unnecessary grind that these games have had. AC origins did it best, Everything after has felt grindy and bloated and all too similar, and the combat has never been fun nor as fluid as past AC games since then. The choice to split the best parts of AC into 2 separate characters completely ruins the game, Yasuke is slow as molasses and Naoe feels snappy but incredibly weak. The combat feels as janky as ever. After almost 40hrs of this game, I knew I was getting close to finishing the game so I can finally uninstall but then I realized I had at least half of the map that still hasn't been explored. So I just quit. Not because of its difficulty but because of just how unfun and boring it was. It's probably the most boring AC game I've ever played. Do better Ubisoft, I wont even buy black flag remake until I see a sale price either, that's how disappointed I am with Ubisoft.
How do you making a boring Ninja assassin game?
