About
Ascent DX is a tiny metroidvania brought to life in glorious 64 x 64 pixel art and soothing chiptune music. Crashed on an unknown planet you have to explore lush jungles, lifeless deserts, and luminescent caves in search of anything that can help you understand what has happened to the planet and how to get off it.
While the game is a bigger version of the original Ascent, with almost twice as many locations to explore, it is still quite a short game. With the same celebrated gameplay and atmosphere, the DX versions also brings more items to find, more platforming puzzles, and more lore to uncover.
A world brought to life by tiny but expressive pixel art
Explore the planet's many biomes in your own pace and direction
Find new powers and abilities that help you on your way
Uncover the fate of the planet as well as your own
Different endings based on how much was discovered

Pleasant lil metroid game with no combat (yayyy) and the perfect pacing of roadblocks, discoveries, and progression. Can't beat free, and I know you have a half hour to spare :)
Schönes kleines Metroidvania, perfekt um Neueinsteiger an das Genre heranzuführen. Und das kostenlos! Das einzige was mich an dem Spielchen stört ist die Schriftart, aber ansonsten 08/10!!
Cute little metroidvania. Nice atmosphere, good level design, the game is short and simple (15 minutes to finish, 20 to complete) but sometimes that's all you need, although I wouldn't mind a bit more. There's nothing really surprising to it, you gain the abilities that you see in pretty much every game of the genre, but the two-buttons gameplay does the job and keeps you wanting to progress. It's weird that the real ending is actually no ending at all though, while the bad ending does provide a cutscene. Other than that I recommend.
Short, but sweet. Ascent DX is a game about crashing on an alien planet and trying to make your way home. The story tries to be more interesting and deep than it really is, but that doesn't ruin the game. This is a very short experience, I completed everything in about 30 minutes, but I had a fun time completing everything. If you want to play a short metroidvania game with solid platforming and fun map exploration but you don't want to invest a bunch of time into it, this is the game for you.
This is a short platforming-focused metroidvania with a science fiction theme that reminds me of watching Outer Limits or listening to X Minus One. I love metroidvanias but hate difficult platforming so I was thankful to find the challenges light with quick spawn points. I'll even give it some bonus points for replacing double jump with a quick downward dash (ie. a mass increase for bounce pads) without causing my muscle memory stress. The small default screen size made it fun to play in a corner while half-watching a video playlist which is how I often like to play my games anyway. =)
It's short, but it's free and for its length I enjoyable, The Pico-8 look may turn some away but it's only that way in appearance and not in function. No jank, it controls just fine. For lovers of the Metroidvania genre only or a nice gateway Metroidvania to give to a gamer who wants to get into the genre and they come with a bit of a background with platformers. (It will be a huge plus if they prefer games with some lore but also open to the ambiguous and open ended nature of thought provoking sci-fi) I do wish the story was longer but what we have here story wise is completely subjective since what we got may be exactly what the developer intended and I've grown to accept and respect that over the years.
