Another Hardest Game: PATCH Origins Review

Are You Ready for Another Hardest Game?

A little robot trying to escape to freedom. Can you help the robot get through the hardest levels, collecting tokens without being hit? Keep reading to find out how hard it really is!
About This Game

Storyline
The story is simple, but very well presented. You are a robot who wants to escape to freedom breaking through the systems. There is a big bad robot and 100 levels for you to beat!
Gameplay mechanics
There are 100 levels for you to beat. The way to do it is by collecting all tokes while avoiding getting hit and then escaping to the safe zone. The problem is that the game is flawed and it ends up being hard for the wrong reasons. For starters, the hit detection does not work. At first I thought it was my imagination, but I took screenshots and it clearly shows that many times I lost even though I wasn’t hit by anything. This is a major flaw for a game that should be about precise movements! On top of that, your shadow counts as colision. And it gets even worse, because your character’s pixels disposition change with every movement. Since it occurs at the pixel level, you may be hit without even knowing how that happened. It’s basically impossible to plan accordingly. So you may have 2 of your pixels to the right, but when you move down you get 3 of your pixels to the right and that’s enough to get you killed. Then you are left wondering what happened since you moved down and not right. By the way, your enemies’ pixels disposition change with every movement too. This one is more of a headache than a problem, because you can watch and learn to time your movements. Combining this with changes on their rotating axis, you will have to do a lot of watching and learning to plan for these irregular movements. It’s important to note that the changes in the rotating axis are so subtle that you may not notice at first, but after observing the pixels closely, you will. Another major issue is that the D-pad is not supported. So imagine timing your moves and using imprecise input such as the analog, instead of the precise D-pad. Allegedly there is a rank after beating the 100 levels. Players that did not beat the 100 levels don’t have access to the rankings though. Suggestion: There should be an overall public ranking and a ranking per level. What is more, the level difficulties are very unbalanced. I am on level 33 and the most difficult level so far has been level 5. That’s the reason 56.5% of players gave up on it (just have a look at the achievements). All this compounds into a very frustrating experience. And, as you may have noticed, it is frustrating for the wrong reasons!
Visuals & Audio
The visuals and audio are simply amazing! It really makes you feel like you are inside of an old computer trying to find your way out!
Pros

• Cheap. • Every level completed gets you an achievement. • Looks and sounds amazing. • 93 languages supported. • Despite the issues, it can still be fun to play.
Cons

• Hit detection bug. • Your character's pixels disposition change with every move. • Shadow counts as colision. • Your enemies’ pixels disposition change with every move. • Enemy movement patterns are constantly changing along with different rotating axis. • No D-pad support. • Difficulty spikes are inconsistent with the game (check how many players completed level 5 in the achievements section). • Allegedly there is a rank after beating the 100 levels, but players cannot access it until they finish the game. There should be an overall public and a ranking per level.
Conclusion

It seems that a lot of love was put into this game, but some inconsistencies along with a major bug turn it into a very frustrating experience. As much as I want to see this game succeed, I cannot recommend it as is. Not unless you are willing to spend the money and cope with the inconsistencies. Devs, please fix the hit detection bug! And I recommend the following changes for the other aspects pointed out: 1) Level 5 should be much further into the game. 2) Make both our character's and the enemies' sprites consistant through movement (no adding extra pixels to the right or left when you move up or down and vice versa). 3) Make the enemy axis change more apparent. Devs could do that by adding a circling clock on the top right of the screen showing when the cycle is back to default. That way, it will be more obvious that the axis changed, because the cycle didn’t restart yet. 4) Include D-pad support for more precise movements. 5) Add rankings to each level, not just the whole playthrough. And make rankings accessible from the beginning! The game has a lot of potential, and if devs solve these issues, it could be a solid recommendation! Please let us know if changes were applied, so we can review our rating.
