Very awesome online rpg I've been playing off and on for years now. Ignore the harsh criticism the games fun and not pay to play, not that much anyway. I'm lvl 105 and I never needed money to get far in this. There is a learning curve but don't expect grind for days just to get a lvl gameplay. This mmo is very fast paced and rewards you nicely for your time. There's even daily level up events so you are guaranteed some progress. Try it out, its free and the graphics are nostalgia greatness.
Just love it. Started in 2005. Been on off since. It is very old game but i love the complexity. I started a couple day to play again, however there is no way to make a payed account. Every time you log out, if you are a new player, you have to retrieve a password generated from another site. There is no. way to choose your own password. I got pretty tired of this very quickly and uninstalled the game. Not gonna play a game where i suddenly cannot log in nor make a payed account to benefit from what that offers. Shadowland, Alien invasion.

This was my first MMORPG, back in 2001. While I have spent various stretches of time not playing the game over the last 24 years, it is still my favorite and the game to which I return when I get bored of the others. AO is not for stupid people who need their hands held every step of the way. It's for people who enjoy figuring out how the game works and then figuring out how to get around those mechanics. This is not a game where bosses can generally be defeated alone; most of the content is geared for groups. This is not a flaw (MMORPG) and more games could benefit from this stance. Oh, and it runs flawlessly on Linux.
Anarchy Online – the first ever science fiction MMO – is now on Steam! Compete and cooperate with thousands of players simultaneously on a vast, alien world. Join humanity nearly 30,000 years in the future in a world of perpetual conflict and scientific marvel.
Anarchy Online is one of the earliest large-scale science fiction MMORPGs, developed and published by Funcom. When it launched in 2001, the online RPG landscape was dominated almost entirely by fantasy worlds filled with knights, magic, and medieval settings. Anarchy Online broke away from that formula by presenting a sprawling futuristic universe built around corporate politics, nanotechnology, and interplanetary colonization. The game takes place on Rubi-Ka, a harsh desert planet rich in a rare substance called Notum, which fuels advanced nanobot technology and serves as the economic backbone of the entire colony. This premise immediately gives the game a unique tone compared to traditional MMORPGs, mixing corporate intrigue, science fiction warfare, and social conflict within a persistent online world. The central conflict of Rubi-Ka revolves around the powerful mega-corporation Omni-Tek, which originally colonized the planet to harvest Notum. Over time, their strict control over the colony led to a rebellion by settlers who formed resistance groups known as the Clans. These factions now fight a long and bitter struggle for control of the planet, while neutral groups attempt to survive between the two sides. Players are introduced into this conflict as newly arrived colonists who must choose whether to support Omni-Tek, join the rebel Clans, or remain neutral and carve out their own path. While the game does not enforce a rigid storyline in the traditional sense, the political tension between factions creates an evolving narrative backdrop that influences world events and player interactions. Character creation is one of the game’s most distinctive features, offering a deep level of customization that was unusual for MMORPGs at the time. Players begin by choosing a “breed,” a genetically engineered human subtype that influences attributes such as strength, intelligence, and endurance. From there, they select a profession that determines their abilities and role in combat. These professions range widely in style and function. Soldiers rely on heavy weapons and battlefield durability, agents specialize in stealth and precision attacks, engineers command robotic companions, while doctors focus on healing through nanotechnology. Instead of traditional fantasy magic systems, the game uses nanobots—microscopic machines programmed to perform advanced technological functions—to replicate the effects of spells. This clever adaptation allows the game to maintain familiar RPG mechanics while remaining firmly grounded in its science fiction setting. Gameplay unfolds within a large shared world where players explore cities, deserts, alien landscapes, and underground facilities across Rubi-Ka. Combat, exploration, trading, and cooperative missions form the core gameplay loop. One of the most innovative systems introduced by Anarchy Online was its dynamic mission generator. Rather than relying solely on fixed quests scattered throughout the world, players can generate missions tailored to their level and preferences. These missions take place in instanced environments filled with enemies, puzzles, and valuable rewards. This system helped keep gameplay fresh and was considered highly innovative at the time, influencing mission structures in later MMORPGs. Social interaction and player cooperation are essential aspects of the experience. Players can form organizations similar to guilds, which allow groups to coordinate activities, share resources, and participate in faction warfare. Large-scale battles between Omni-Tek and Clan forces often emerge as players fight for territorial control across Rubi-Ka. The game also features a robust player-driven economy where weapons, armor, and rare items are traded between players. Markets, trade terminals, and social hubs serve as gathering points where players interact, negotiate deals, and form alliances for dangerous missions. Over the years, Anarchy Online expanded significantly through major updates and expansion packs. One of the most important expansions introduced the Shadowlands, a mysterious alternate dimension with floating islands, surreal landscapes, and powerful enemies. Later updates added alien invasion events that allowed players to defend cities against extraterrestrial attackers and explore crashed alien ships. These expansions greatly expanded the scope of the game, introducing new storylines, mechanics, and high-level challenges that kept long-time players engaged. From a technical perspective, the game reflects its early-2000s origins. At launch, its graphics engine was considered advanced for an MMORPG, offering detailed environments and character models compared to many contemporaries. However, modern players will likely notice the aging visuals and somewhat complex interface. Despite these limitations, the art direction remains effective in portraying a futuristic world shaped by corporate power and technological ambition. The environments of Rubi-Ka—from neon-lit cities to vast deserts and alien landscapes—still convey a strong sense of atmosphere. Anarchy Online’s launch was not without controversy. The game initially suffered from serious technical problems, including server instability, bugs, and performance issues that frustrated early players. However, Funcom spent considerable time fixing these issues through updates and patches, gradually stabilizing the game and improving the player experience. Over time, the game earned a dedicated community that appreciated its deep customization systems, unique setting, and ambitious design. Another major milestone in the game’s history was its transition to a free-to-play model in 2004, supported partly by in-game advertising. This decision allowed new players to experience the core game without a subscription, significantly extending its lifespan and introducing the world of Rubi-Ka to a broader audience. Even decades after its release, the game continues to operate, making it one of the longest-running MMORPGs in gaming history. Ultimately, Anarchy Online represents an important chapter in the evolution of online role-playing games. Its science fiction setting, faction-driven conflict, and innovative gameplay systems helped expand the possibilities of what MMORPGs could be at a time when the genre was still finding its identity. While its aging technology and complex systems may feel daunting for newcomers, the depth of its worldbuilding and the freedom it offers players remain impressive achievements. For players interested in exploring the roots of modern MMORPG design or experiencing a unique science fiction online world, Anarchy Online remains a fascinating and historically significant game. Its combination of deep character customization, large-scale faction conflict, and expansive science fiction storytelling ensures that it still holds a special place within the history of online gaming. Not recommended. This game's age is definitely showing, with dated graphics, archaic design choices, confusing tutorial, in-your face cash shop even before the tutorial, and just a rough overall onboarding experience. It made an impact in the MMO landscape for it's innovations and uniqueness when it came out, but it's really hard for a new player to enjoy today.
I have played the game for than 20 years, off and on-free and paid. Very complex. Anyone with attention disorder needs to 'not apply.' I have only been 'into' the Steam version a few hours-seems fine. In the game there are three main factions. Within these are hundreds of small group that oft times war Ginst each other. From monsters to flying aircraft and a few spells to fly without an apparatus every imagination can be enlarged. I love the game.
