No, really. Not only did I teach this story and actually like it but this silent little game experience made for an unexpectedly-contemplative five or ten minutes. sad!
Nifty and fun short adaptation of a classic short story.
The game is a bit long, but it's not very hard to complete if you are a patient player. The alternative ending is totally unexpected, and the music is OP. GG : D
https://youtu.be/yTGMdrDgNj4 Offering a small bite size story that is told well enough without words to hook players before confronting their investment at the end.
Read the story for school and stumbled upon this and decided to give it a shot. It definetly does a good job at depicting the original short story. You shouldn't go in expecting a ton of gameplay, it's more of a short walktrough of the story. If you're familiar with the story and enjoyed it, you should definitely spend your <10 Minutes to check this out. If you do not know the story go read it and see if you like it; or just skip this game.
A brief game with impact. Based on the short story of the same name by Ambrose Bierce, this simple side-scroller (in its most definite sense) has charming 8 bit visuals and animations. It relies on progression triggers to orchestrate and control a visual experience that is effective and atmospheric. At points in the 5 minute story it uses variable background and foreground layers to add a little variety to the journey. In experiences such as this, little details usually come loaded with significance and I appreciated the colour of the birds, and thinking about the story after it had finished. Other reviewers suggest visiting the source material is a good idea-- which of course it is. But, for those who like the US Civil War era, and 8 bit aesthetics, and games that are quite minimalist, this is for you. I personally tick all three of those boxes, so I will say that I enjoyed it.
The music took me out of it
I just realized by comparing it to the trailer that my game was playing at 1/4 speed. I don't know why this happened but the slower experience, which I thought was intentional, made the
ending such a rug pull. All that buildup to say "life sucks." :lunar2019laughingpig:
Even with that anomaly, I still found the game immersive and appreciated how it said a lot with a little. I was going to recommend trying it up until
the end, which soured the experience.
The longer I sit with it, the more I ask myself...what was the point of telling that story?
If I were about to be executed, I'd probably daydream about escaping and reuniting with loved ones too.
Is this supposed to be a mind-blowing epiphany about the human psyche?
